Why shorts are accessible.

- In this video, Spencer starts by sitting in his wheelchair talking directly to the camera. Then he is seen standing on the ground on his hands with no shirt on showing his muscular body and how his pelvis tucks in front of him and why elastic shorts are so important. Obviously he looks very handsome as per usual.
Cash and prizes 😂 I love your sense of humor

It will now always be referred to as cash and prizes by me 😂😂😂

He's an amazing person. He can still have that sense of humor with his limitations.

That's so interesting actually, how he sat down, it looked surprisingly comfy and cozy. Honestly, I'm grateful he was vulnerable with us sharing info about his unique body, it's good for awareness

This is the perfect approach to talking about ppl who are different. No judging, just matter of fact information sharing.
Elastic waistbands are underrated. They should be in clothes more. Another example of how making life more accessible for some leads to improvement of life for everyone.
lol the way you actually said “shooting star” after “the more you know” cracked me up. Your sense of humor is so awesome
Also accessible for blind and low vision folks who may be present ❤

@@robinjupiter4731 it's a reference to a meme. If you look up "the more you know" you'll get it.
I love it when people who have different kinds of disabilities get on social media and give details on their day to day lives. It's fascinating to see the innovative ways in which they overcome these and other kinds of roadblocks they may encounter due to their disability. I just love seeing innovation and inventions that make life easier or that make improvements in quality of life in general, and in the disabled community I find quite a bit of it. Thank you for sharing!
It also helps empower other people with disabilities that may be having a hard time utilizing resources to get the accommodations they need
Mhm it let's people like him know they're not alone
It’s also really fun to learn about how their day to day lives are! When I was in 4th grade we went on a field trip to this place where it was kind of like a disabled hangout and a bunch of people had talked to us about their disability and taught us to have empathy and NOT sympathy.

Sooooooo maybe I should think about starting a YT channel and talk about my disability and how I live with it 🤔
You are an inspiration because people are afraid of what they’re unfamiliar with. You’re helping the world with ACCEPTANCE!
Plus you’re a great presenter and funny as all get-out!
Love for you, my brother. 💛
Damn. Things we take for granted. 😮
Having siblings with significant disabilities has made me keenly aware of how hard it is to find clothes that work for body types that are defined by their disability.
I was just gonna mention that. It would be cool for someone to come up with a line fore different fit clothing for different bodies types.
there is an Australian clothing brand called JAM the label, which is pretty cool! hopefully more stuff comes out like this 😊
I have trouble finding clothes because I'm short for the country I live in, can't imagine how difficult it is to be even more non-"standard". Sometimes I wish we could go back to the times when all clothes were tailored. It would get rid of fast fashion too.
@@ihaylz glad there are some, I’m sure there are a few here in the US but in fairness I haven’t done much research.
@@libbylou6004there are several start-ups/small companies that are designing and selling adaptive clothes. But often the prices of the items aren't accessible to those who need those clothes. Ofc such small companies can't offer handmade clothes at prices that match China made fast fashion, but most disabled people live below the poverty line [chronic unemployment and governments not allowing those who receive a pension/benefits to own assets and have savings] and can't afford these adaptive designs.
On the other hand alterations or custom made clothes often get covered by health insurance or government programs. Like orthopedic shoes, bras for breast prostheses, and getting additional zippers/buttons/openings/wedges or elastic waistbands installed and any other alterations.
Complete accessibility would mean that everyone can buy clothes in their personal style that fit their body type in a store nearby or online, but it's also unrealistic to offer that for the small percentage of people with limb differences [i.e. amputations, dwarfism, deformations, atrophies, congenital defects etc]. What would be realistic is creating clothes that are made for sitting since so many able-bodied people spend a lot of time sitting as well. So, pants that are higher in the back, cover ankles and crease less in the knees, elastic waistbands, lower/side pockets, tops + jackets with longer sleeves, shorter in the front, wider across the shoulders but still fitted. Fortunately we are slowly moving in that direction.
Bc there are actually designs that are "accidentally" accessible like all the different Nike FlyEase models, oldschool Adibreak trackpants, anything elastic like waistbands, shoe laces [also useful for zipper pulls] etc, front closure bras and side-tied bikinis/panties, or zippers/buttons/straps that go along the sides of shoes, pants, sleeves, tops etc.
Some of the big brands [Primark, Zalando, Nike, Tommy Hilfiger, Target, Zappos etc] launch adaptive clothing lines at affordable prices once in a while, but they keep disappearing or get drastically changed, so those people who find them helpful can't replace those items [or have to invest in stockpiling them before that happens].
Another thing that used to be accessible in the past was that clothing stores had inhouse seamstresses that would do the alterations immediately or for next day pickup, often at no extra cost. I used to buy my jeans at a store like that and they made them fit like a glove. 👌 It's fortunately still custom in formal wear stores [suits, bridal and ball gowns etc.] and I recommend everyone to spend a little more on quality basic items and then bring them to a seamstress who will sew them to your body for very little cost.

As a woman who is also in a wheelchair (T5 paraplegic from a spinal cord injury almost 16 years ago) this could not be more accurate!!!! We need accessible clothing so it doesn't give us sores, breakdowns, and are just plain uncomfortable to wear from a sitting position! Love your page and your personality!!!
And I’m just fascinated by the contrast. You got that barrel chested power lifter body type. An absolute unit.
I've seen alot of disabled people (to their EVERY RIGHT) state their not obligated to show their anatomy or how things work for them at all
so I'm really honored and greatful you chose to share, it was really cool to me actually to see how your muscles and things have grown and adapted to usage they weren't necessarily designed for. I doubt you'll ever see this but I wonder if you struggle with elbow joint issues? they seemed.... shifted? from the socket almost to me from the pressure and usage of walking?
I notice the exact same thing with his elbows, especially his left one (the one on the right side of the screen), I’m wondering too!
PS. I am a disabled person myself and I use a wheelchair as well but for different reasons
Disabled person here. We are often wonky and yet still incredibly functional. I have a friend who has a 101° curvature in her spine. It still blows me away with what she's able to accomplish in a single day! ❤️🙌
It's mostly likely due to their bones twisting, which can happen to anyone. Whether their born with a disability or not.
Personally had it happen with my arms and legs due to essentially growing too fast as a kid and my bones couldn't keep up.
The added weight of walking for years + Weak ankles just made it worse on my legs, which is likely what is happening with their arms. If your using those limbs to walk, a corrective surgery can be done to help.
The corrective surgery isn't always needed tho.
Disabled person here. Thank you for this comment. You seem to understand that there is a difference between someone wanting to share things about life with their disabilities, and people feeling entitled to demand people share things about their life with disabilities.
Sadly, many people don't understand the difference.
Strangers literally have approached me in my wheelchair in public and nastily demanded my personal, private medical information, some of which I legally cannot even share, such as 20 years of prescription fentanyl. They often even dare to claim that they are entitled because, according to them, they are paying for my expenses because they pay taxes and they assume I get disability.
It is crazy how many people try to use disabled people willingly choosing to share information at their lives with disabilities.
..and again, with certain medications, like prescription American fentanyl, and other controlled substance prescription medications, patients are literally not allowed by law to tell anyone about them.
@@rachelmarie2228 I've never seen it in person myself, but I see it alot with content creators like here when they show/share some things but not other stuff. even the "well this creator shared" is bizarre to me like... what ever are people I s2g

@@haldouglas4773 dude, its kinda weird to say that when this creator in specific has said many times that random questions and speculations about his anatomy are rude. dont admit youve been speculating on the anatomy of a disabled person who has specifically asked not to be prodded about it just cause he happens to visible online. i am not "treating you like your bodies are dirty", its weird to talk about anybodies bodies this way
@@twinbruisesonmyshins this is TH-cam shorts. Very rarely are people long time viewers, and even then they’ve probably missed the videos explaining that. Instead of just leaving a three word comment shaming someone (who in their mind doesn’t understand why), why not simply explain the creator doesn’t like speculation about their body in the first place? Seems counterintuitive to leave that aggressive-seeming reply to then clap back at someone with an uhm ackshewally moment when you could’ve just done it from the start.

Different abilities😊
@@micaelamorrigan2544 absolutely not. use "disabilities". disabled people dont want you to change the term just so you can feel more comfortable. the disabled community at large prefers to be called disabled and "different abilities" and "differently abled" are euphemisms that cause more harm to us. we didnt choose those, abled people did. call us disabled unless someone disabled tells you that they would prefer to be referred to in another way. i mean this 100% seriously, please change your language, this is incredibly frustrating and condescending.
@@micaelamorrigan2544 hey, I use disabilities. I have ADHD which, under the laws of the country I am from, counts under a mental disability. I can't speak for everyone but redifining a term like this will just make it a taboo topic to tip toe around. It's a fact the person in this video and many others are disabled and there is nothing bad with it, not at all. It just means you can't do certain things as easily as others and there is not a single thing wrong with it, it's a fact. Sometimes its hard but using different terms is just not a good solution.
@@micaelamorrigan2544No. It's a disability
The mechanic of how bodies adapt is so cool and I'm glad that technology can help people with disabilities to adapt things to themselves too
I adore how this man looks, and I hope that isn't weird or insulting in any way, that is not my intention. He looks surprisingly comfy when he sits like that.

Honestly love educational videos like this. I feel like a lot of us were taught as kids to just shut up, never stare and never ask questions when it came to those with disabilities and now as an adult I find myself curious and wanting to ask questions but worried about how to approach the subject without being rude, offensive or intrusive. Especially out in public as you never know who’s willing to chat to you or who you might embarrass by asking. Videos like this are a great way of to educate others on your condition without the awkwardness of able-bodied people approaching you about it. We thank you!
elastic is one of the best clothing inventions! it makes everything soooo much more comfortable and easy to wear. 😊
My right arm and leg never grew to be full adult size because I had a stroke at 5. Trying not to sound insensitive here, but I'm glad we are representing this. It's a struggle I never knew I'd feel self conscious about. I'm really glad you are representing us. ❤️

I wish more pants in adult sizes had elastic waistbands. I'm mostly sitting or laying down, and I use a wheelchair. Having pants that don't restrict, dug into you, or fall off when standing is such a huge accessibility thing most people don't even think about.
Since I don't exactly move around much, my belly and waist is, well, round. I look like I'm 5 months pregnant. Having pants that fit is near impossible to find. Especially if you have short legs like me.
Yes! Pre wheelchair I was VERY pear shaped with a tiny waist. Now that I'm not moving the same way I've become an apple and it's hard to find pants that don't cut into your sides without going up 3 or 4 sizes. Then you get that giant gap in the back. I'm too cheap to look into wheelchair clothes with Velcro down the back/side like stripper pants.
You might also look into wrap pants. They've gained a lot of popularity recently so they might be easier to find. (I have no idea if they are wheelchair accessible though, I've never tried...)
Have you tried maternity pants? They typically keep a smaller waist while having plenty of stomach room. Just a thought, but I feel like even someone of a more masculine identity could wear them and not have others know, if they didn't want to share that.
Hopefully this suggestion helps you!
A long time ago I saw there are designers who sell fashion extra for wheelchair bound people.

Slightly off topic, but the upper body strength on that man.
Respectfully, the human body's ability to adapt and overcome is incredible. You're amazing, thank you for sharing 💜
This is... strangely fascinating.
Very interesting. I wear them for bloating myself as I am disabled and can tend to swell in any area of my body that’s not getting good blood flow or is getting too much work for what I know to handle. Helps with spasms as well, as when it contracts, it doesn’t have any areas that tug in!
I also from time to time have to wear stretchy waisted pants. My disability causes digestion problems from time to time that can result in extreme discomfort and pain and the pressure non stretchy pants place on my lower stomach increases that pain significantly
I'm currently pregnant so I'm wearing maternity trousers etc. There is a very high chance I will continue to wear them when I'm not pregnant, especially when I'm feeling bloated! Would highly recommend to anyone with any kind of stomach issues or who just wants to feel more comfortable!
Omg i adore his attitude sm the "shooting stars, byyee" AAA COME BACK

This is the first video I’ve seen of yours and I already love your content! You seem like such a fun person to talk to!!
Ive always prefered elastic waistbands tbh
You're the first disabled person who ive seen not be rude to genuine questions, not only that you explained simply and in a way ANYONE can understand plus showed visually! Sir you are truly incredible in so many ways!
That's because disabled people are not obliged to teach you. Go into any comment section and you find in the new comments hundreds asking the same questions or asking for proof to even people with visual disability. We get bombarded every day, if we have invisible disabilities we aren't believed. We have be persecuted, locked up, tod we are a waste of resources and constantly put down. And when we finally get an opportunity to advocate for ourselves suddenly within (internalised ableism) means to others we cannot be correct in how we want to perceived. We are many people, young to old. So when you are on a bad day, with everyone being crappy and suddenly someone says you can fix this by teaching us. Well, excuse those like myself who are mentally and physically exhausted.
What I will say is that, as a disabled person, a genuine question to someone might be a question that you've been asked 100 times. As you can imagine, it gets tiring with people asking "what happened? Can you drive? Can you have sex? How do you pee?" if you're just trying to get food from Tesco's. And at the end of the day, we're not obligated to answer a question - while I would recommend people be polite in the face of questions that seem good natured, I can understand why someone might snap.
love how you're trying to lift a disabled man up while putting down a ton of other disabled people
