On the MD-200, I'm sure it's a tough pedal to demo in this format. I have the MD-500 and really like it, but it took me a loooong time to get to the point where I could quickly tweak parameters to get to what I was after. For the most part, anyway, there are still some modes that I don't touch/understand. I do really like the pedal though. For $350 it has given me sounds I use quite frequently... I'll say that the Flashback x4 may be my favorite delay pedal of all time, and I say that having owned a Timeline and a DD5. So easy to use live for the features you get. I had an original one of these. I only use a couple of delay sounds at a gig, and I tweak the tempo to taste. I might go and buy one of the new ones just to check out new sounds. Plus, TonePrint makes it more fun.
I am loving that Comfortably Plum, I am on the list to purchase one. Unfortunately there is a 14 week waiting period but well worth the wait. Thanks guys!
More QotSA jams please :) Also loving what Boss are doing with these 500 and 200 series, boutique quality (if that's a thing), awesome build quality, awesome functionality and sound and a good price. Masters of innovation. Also hot damn, the PDF after the Comfortably Numb in the mix during the jam sounded great, really demonstrated the tone shaping possibilities.
Yeah totally agree on the boss pedals. I think the delay from that series is the best of its kind. They nailed the form factor, user experience, feature set, usable sounds etc etc. They really hit it out of the park. Makes the strymon stuff seem quite dated IMO.
I hate modulation too! And now I have a phaser, a flanger, a chorus, a Univibe, and an analog delay with modulation, and I'm like "should I get a Mobius?"
Around 24:50, I think the silly 'push-for-large-adjustment' rate knob has Mick stumped as the tremolo is stuck on super slow - and he is going back and forth trying to get a normal sound out of it. I get the implementation; Boss wanted to give the user very granular control over the rate (same type of knob on the DD-20 and DD-200) but in actual use its pretty annoying. Strymon's implementation on the Mobius / Timeline is better where they have a separate free-spinning knob for granular rate / delay time adjustment, and a regular pot for normal rate / time changes (and fun).
Man, that was one sweet, comfortable plum. I never much cared for plums until today. Great playing, too. Mick, you sure look like a happy man when that new/old Strat is singing.
I use my PDF 1 just as a filter. You don't have to use the distortion. I already have a distortion that I like but I like the cocked wah effect it gives me.
Haven't commented in a while as I do not just want to hear myself type and there has been no VCQ of late. But have not missed a minute of any episodes and this one needed a massive digital high five... as usual, from me that is not because I will likely ever get any of the demo'd gear, but you guys being inspired inspires. As always thanks for the great content and it really does do some genuine good even if in a different way than you planned.
The right side of that comfortably plumb pedal is basically a colorsound boost...gotta have that with the muff to get “that sound”....glorious....but that “sus” knob needs more usable range on the lower end. It can get LOUD really fast. If I remember correctly the original had a similar problem...(I think in reverse tho...memory fails). Cranked Hiwatt, muff, colorsound, Strat, in ear ambient monitors so you don’t bleed. Awesome!!!
As always, great show, guys. And what a delight it is to see Dan's lp again. Mick, my man, that progression you played on the PDF, right before Dan jumped in, was pretty dope.
I had the original flashback. Created a toneprint that nailed THAT delay sound for me. Got the timeline and thought, why keep the flashback. Timeline is way more expensive, therefore must be better... Nooo. I knew I was going to miss my flashy and that tone. I guess the next best thing to do is to get rid of the timeline and go x4 and hope that it's possible to recreate that toneprint.
On the original flashback x4, to kill the dry sound on the reverse setting you place the feedback knob all the way down. I’m assuming it’s that way on the II x4? Most incorrectly assume (as did I), that you place the level knob all the way up. *I’m typing this before the end of The episode. If you answer this before it ends I apologize. *edit: apparently the new II x4 has a convenient kill dry switch on the back panel. So that’s even better.
About David's tone: remember it is that really clean Hiwatt - or later on some big Fender's in the 80's. Also, he seems to have had volume pedals on the floor for a really long time, which makes me think he would have been using his guitar vol (and tone) during some of the early 70's when he was off into this. Bjorn has lots of info about how compressors have been used - and eq pedals all over the place.
He also has a Mesa Boogie rig he uses in the studio from time to time. As for the Fenders, I was informed that he was using them as early as DSOTM. I believe they had a Twin on some tracks (but mostly the Hi-Watts). Pretty much every gain pedal in his live rig(s) - Muffs, BKs, Cornish customs, RAT, etc- has its own dedicated EQ, sometimes two, pre-and-post.
The PDF requires a proprietary expression pedal to fully operate it, as it is a powered, active unit, of some size and weight.Though the pedals are widely around, I had to order the expression new and direct. It greatly broadens utility, but it is quite the investment in space and weight.
Yes. Given that we guitarists are told to turn down at gigs so much more these days, it's harder to generate controlled harmonic feedback. Any tips you guys can bring would be so appreciated.
Totally thought you guys were saying Tone-henge till this episode's intro. Was like AH, Tone Hedge, that totally makes more sense with the video! Probably could have read the correct thing if I paid enough attention.
Hey a suggestion! I'd be interested to see you do a comparison between some of the compact multi-effects units like the new Tech 21 Fly Rig 5 V2 & the Line 6 HX FX and a compact board rig with individual pedals. Do some of the new multi FX pedals cut it sonically? Are these compact easy travellers a viable alternative to a small board for fussy tone types?
I think the Big Muff-Colordriver combination with David Gilmour really just features the Colordriver as a boost, rather than adding a great deal of dirt to the sound. At least that's what I gather from gilmourish.com.
Regarding drum delay, it's on the Alter Ego X4 (which a huge reason I bought it. Actually, THE reason)- but I don't know if they are making a version 2 of this.
Hey guys. Could you do some more amp stuff. I know it’s “that pedal show” but tones come from amps also. I’m very curious about the mig-50 that Josh gave you. And is that an Orange in the back I see. Also some new guitars coming and going. Where’s the black strat with the weird clay dots mick. Returned it after one episode?
You guys should do a show on the boss BC-2 combo drive and compare to other AC30 in a box pedals. The boss combo drive is no longer made and is an awesome pedal that stacks nicely with overdrives. It would be nice to see what you can do with it.
And Blue is never seen from again......perma-grin has beset Sir Mick as he wield's the mighty EXCALIBURST!!! Hey-Ohhh!! ok enough of that silliness, back to your regularly scheduled program....
Hahahah!!! But not quite. People are already moaning about the elitism of vintage guitars and they kind of have a point. So Blue and Ford Transit will be back soon enough!
@@ThatPedalShow Mick, in my view there certainly is some elitism out there for some folks (primarily the younger ones who weren't around "back in the day"). Then there is nostalgia, which I believe is what you (and I am in that camp) feel when you play that '61. If it doesn't move a person, they claim "elitism" and fine for them. As for you and me, ........ nostalgia baby!!!!
I don't have the manual nor the pedal but i think what happened with the md-200 is that it was in tap tempo mode because the rate knob wasn't doing anything, and at that slow speed most effects sounded wacky
Following on from Mick's comment about the colour coordinated board, if you had to make a board with pedals from just one manufacturer who would it be...and which pedals?
Arrgggg!!! Mick here. That is hard. Would be probably Analog Man or Diamond for me. Or Jam Pedals. Pretty much all analogue through-hole hand made goodness. Pretty much.
Hello. No, we set the amps so they’re what we consider to be the most balanced and open. Not too much of anything, not too little. Nice and open and responsive. Cheers!
Beware of Flashback 4X....they didn’t back up a fairly expensive pedal. Im a nobody and they proved it. Had to try to fix it myself, took months for parts but got it running again. 265$ was to deep to back out and new guts were worth a shot as the looper function was what had sold me. Only company I’ve dealt with that didn’t give a F**k. Caveat Emptor.
Another cracking episode but I really wish you'd spend some time with getting the best out of stuff like the Boss Modulation box. Not everything is plug and go but if you spend a little time with such things, you'll get a much better idea of their capabilities. If an old bastard like me can deal with it, so can you. :)
@@ThatPedalShow Now, that illustrates what I like about you guys, apart from the gear and stuff... you actually take the time to read and respond to comments.
Always! And we knew we’d not really done the research on the MD-200. Largely because neither of us felt inspired to. We shouldn’t do stuff we know we won’t like is the truth.
Always enjoy watching you guys. Even my girlfriend enjoys and she doesn’t even play. I would love some help from someone with my Flashback 2X4. I can import presets from my phone but on my computer instead of writing to one tone print and then saving that to a button it wipes out my previous settings for all stored presets. What am I doing wrong.
I'm a long time follower and huge fan of pedal show. But a bit desapointed by your comment about the MD200. A great piece of gear. So easy to use straight forward. Just watch Danish Pete's review, or Brett Kingman's. I own one. Easy to use w/out tweaking for hours, getting full and decent tones, but tons of setting possibilities if you want to spend more time on it. Can't be compared to OD and DD200. MD200 is more of a multieffect because 12 different modulations implies multiple variables to take into consideration. Not the same with just time and repeats or gain & volume...
Sure. More time would no doubt make navigation easier. But all that aside, to our ears it’s just not in the same ballpark finally as good analogue mods. Cheers!
Re: Mick's Moan on presets... Chase Bliss Faves switch! I feel like this thing works really well, and interfaces with not just their pedals, right? Could you have a DD200 with a Faves?
So i like what i hear with these multi modulation pedals and they'd save room on my pedal board but What do we reckon guys MD 200 or hang fire and wait to see what the Wampler Terraform is like?
Ah, we can’t get behind any of em, sorry. Much better off with your two fave analogue mods we reckon. Once it’s multi digi. all much of a muchness to me. Sorry. Mick here.
@@ThatPedalShow Ah thanks Mick. I'm on the fence still. It would save 4 pedals on my lump of a board. Its whether there'd be a bigger enough trade off of sound i guess. That'd make a really interesting show putting it in the context of a band or recording. Can we hear the difference in a mix? Anyways great show as ever. Many thanks for doing what you do. You and Dan are stars.
All very usable sounds, straight forward enough. I've seen a couple of Instagram posts with rack units. They confuse the life outta me. What's the need for them when you can get massive tones from compact stomp boxes? 🤷🏼♂️ #becausetone
We make the backing tracks in Apple Logic - a mixture of programmed drums and played bass usually. They’re all available to buy from thatoedalshowstore.com. cheers!
Hallo. I would like ask this question for long time. When you doing PedalJams or standard TPS are you going to two amps spliting signal after pedal board or wet/dry? Many thanks
Usually try not to triple comment, but I wonder how good this MD-200 sounds against the Strymon Mobius. Sounds a bit digital to my ear which the Mobius can, but doesn't always. I imagine there is a dry through but almost sounds like there isn't. You were correct that the other 200 series pedals sounded pretty damn good.
On the final jams -on headphones- the backing tracks sound bit louder than your playing? Great jams, guys. Awesome Strat, Mick! Congrats! Is that strat from the vintage stravaganza episode?
Thought the review of the Boss Md 200 was a bit dismissive, Dan's expression especially lol i suppose you get spoilt with the array of gear you see. keep up the good work though
@@ThatPedalShow I see Mick with an enormous case of insomnia for the next few months as he tries to squeeze in as much as possible with that beautiful '61 :-))
Hey guys! (Or anyone who fancies commenting)... does the boss MD 200 flip the phase when engaged? Ideally I want to use it wet dry but not sure if I can as I know many mod pedals do flip phase (such as the two pedals I currently use)?
Not sure about the MD200 myself BUT I know The Gear Page has lists of pedals that do/don't preserve polarity ('phase') of the audio signal. A weirdly overlooked spec isn't it?
I’d be curious to know how that strat is wired. Considering you claim it cleans up exceptionally well I’d be willing to be it’s wired 50’s style. I build and sell tons of 50’s wired strat harnesses for my customers. They almost exclusively prefer them over standard strat wiring that gets dark and muddy when the volume gets rolled back.
That Pedal Show According to diagrams it’s standard strat wiring. If you guys are always playing through pedals it’s that you are experiencing the loading of the pups which will give that “cleaning up” with the volume. It’s not just the guitar it’s the relationship of the guitar with the pedals you are experiencing. A 50’s strat harness will achieve this with or without pedals. It has other pros that help with dynamics due to the high pass filter action and pup relationship. You should try one.
Poor MD-200 got turned on during the ending jam and immediately "nope-d" when it couldn't be dialed in to a decent sound quickly. Seems like a rough pedal to plug-and-play!
I watch about the first 10 minutes of every episode and then spend the next hour playing guitar over you guys talking lol
Thats why i have to watch those episodes several time because of starting to play myself :) Thank you guys so much for all the inspiration!

I don't have the manual nor the pedal but i think what happened with the md-200 is that it was in tap tempo mode because the rate knob wasn't doing anything, and at that slow speed most effects sounded wacky
The rate knob should override the TT. We did get it going a bit faster as times....
@@ThatPedalShow ...but not others. By the way i appreciate for how long you suffered that digital programmable pedal anyway 😁
Thanks for another great video!
That strat is it. That's the one. That one right there!
I’m curious about how you set up the amp pairs for each show. Do you dial in each amp’s tone settings or are all tone knobs set to, say, ‘5’?
Hello. No, we set the amps so they’re what we consider to be the most balanced and open. Not too much of anything, not too little. Nice and open and responsive. Cheers!
pedal jams is brilliant
Love the Comfortably Plumb :-)
Beware of Flashback 4X....they didn’t back up a fairly expensive pedal. Im a nobody and they proved it. Had to try to fix it myself, took months for parts but got it running again. 265$ was to deep to back out and new guts were worth a shot as the looper function was what had sold me. Only company I’ve dealt with that didn’t give a F**k. Caveat Emptor.
10:20 OH SNAPPP!!!!!!!!! That strat magic!!
Another cracking episode but I really wish you'd spend some time with getting the best out of stuff like the Boss Modulation box. Not everything is plug and go but if you spend a little time with such things, you'll get a much better idea of their capabilities. If an old bastard like me can deal with it, so can you. :)
Yep, conceded.
Yes, it's called the DD500.
Are you even demo-ing a chorus sound if you don't do the C to Dadd4 trick?
Rack stuff is a relic of the 80s, still a lot of cool stuff that hasn't come over to pedal form though.
Ha! I’ve watched three reviewers test out the Comfortably Plum and nary a Gilmour tone in sight. Still sounds great though.
hello Dan and mick.... can you re visit the ac 15? with the latest friendly gain pedals to further highlight the amp as a good pedal platform? thx!!
What do you boys use for your drum and bass loop? I need that for solo jamming purposes.
Many thanks
Dual mono Martin. Same thing to both amps. Cheers!
Catalinbread Echorec Deluxe is coming!!!!!!
ACamp * say whaaaaaat!?
Just comfortably plum nice, boys 👌🏻
Usually try not to triple comment, but I wonder how good this MD-200 sounds against the Strymon Mobius. Sounds a bit digital to my ear which the Mobius can, but doesn't always. I imagine there is a dry through but almost sounds like there isn't. You were correct that the other 200 series pedals sounded pretty damn good.
They all can sound great I reckon. Mick here. I think it would come down to a pure personal opinion.
The little metal things that stick up... we call them thumb bleeders in the states.
I spent the whole video expecting the strat headstock to knock the cup of tea into the board and ruin everyone’s day. Tension....🤦🏻♀️☕️⚡️
On the final jams -on headphones- the backing tracks sound bit louder than your playing?
Great jams, guys.
Awesome Strat, Mick! Congrats!
Is that strat from the vintage stravaganza episode?
Not quite Marti. It’s one I’ve been loaned from a very kind human!
That Pedal Show well... that is a hell of a kind human being.
This guitar sounds beautiful!
Best from Barcelona
Wow- squinty Dan Eyes in the first 30 seconds - nice intro Mic!
Thought the review of the Boss Md 200 was a bit dismissive, Dan's expression especially lol i suppose you get spoilt with the array of gear you see. keep up the good work though
Mick ,
The 61
Long term loan morphing into a lifetime loan?
Well that would be nice. But I’ll take a few months. :0)
@@ThatPedalShow I see Mick with an enormous case of insomnia for the next few months as he tries to squeeze in as much as possible with that beautiful '61 :-))
Mick, with the Lightening-Bolt reminded me of Jimmy Page in The Song Remains the Same = nice
Any chance you guys can get Sarah Lipstate of Noveller on your show? Her pedal boards are blowing my mind...
We’ll try :)
Check out Allen Hinds. He has the ultimate light tough and such divine tone. You won't be disappointed.
I love Allen Hinds - Mick here. I watched one of his True Fire courses on my last vacation. Love his philosophy. Cheers!
It’s wired like they were in 1961 - only had one pot change since then.
That Pedal Show
According to diagrams it’s standard strat wiring.
