There are 2 main reasons people played Utopia Ray back then. The first is that Utopia blows up for some reason if attacked while it has no materials so going into Utopia Ray was a way to turn it into a vanilla 2500 beatstick with no downside. The second reason is that the regular Utopia remained a highly viable competitive card for much of Zexal purely because it was the second strongest generic rank 4 behind Gem-Knight Pearl. Unlike Pearl, though, it had a relevant effect. An easy out to it at the time was to play mind control on your opponent's Utopia and then overlay it into Utopia Ray.
Notably the REDMD hit wasn't for Chaos Dragons but Hieratics. In the OCG Hieratics was the best OTK deck for a time where they were putting out two REDMD with the standard combo and making Gustav Max. This enabled OTKs from any setup that put three 6s on board for upwards of 10,000 damage. We got this hit before we got Gustav Max as a Jump promo. I need this for every deck, For real, The actual play by play and what it does of each card had just increased my deck and extra deck of the gears by like 15 to 20 cards, an issue lots of new players like myself run into is how to combine certain cards and what ones will actually apply.
Iv been running the skull servants deck, well my own kinda take on it anyway. Heaps of traps and negates with almost nothing BUT skull servants cards, but then 3 Alghoul Mazerra and ash blossom. My BEST card, and pretty much win condition is combo of Wightbaking, King of skull, and then I use The grass is greener, Watch my king go from a standard 4K melee to like 11 😂
