- Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon... the most technically sound players ever. There are a ton of us basketball fans, who love this sport, who hold Hakeem Olajuwon & Michael Jordan in the highest regard because of how polished their games were, and how much they perfected the sport. There's always the long running question of "what would have happened..." had the Rockets not lost to the Lakers in 1991, missed the playoffs in 92, lost to the Sonics in 93, lost to the Sonics in 96, lost to the Jazz in 97, or lost to the Jazz in 98... COULD the Rockets have beat the Bulls? Truth is, the Rockets had ample opportunity to face Jordan in the NBA Finals, and couldn't get there.
As for this game.... Wow this game featured a plethora of NBA stars and this game produced so many highlights! The Rockets featured a roster loaded with talent including legendary jump shooter, Purvis Short. 7'4" Hall of Famer Ralph Sampson. Speedy & talented Allen Leavell. Rodney McCray who was a talented 2 way player. They also had the bucket getting legend himself, World B. Free, coming off the bench. For the Bulls, Michael Jordan still had an inferior supporting cast, but the supporting cast was improving with a young & developing Scottie Pippen & Horace Grant who was already a productive starter. It would be a while before Michael would find true consistency from his 2 sidekicks, but you saw glimpses of things to come from each teammate. Any time you get 2 legends like Michael Jordan & Hakeem Olajuwon on the same court, it's must see TV! Both Air Jordan & Hakeem The Dream Olajuwon were fierce competitors, but Michael always set himself apart from the rest through sheer will and relentless domination.

Not Jordan. Not Bias. People watch these games to see how good the young MJ really was. What impresses me most is his D. His blind side blocks and steals are just ridiculous. THANKS AGAIN for sharing another RARE 80's Jordan game. I fucking love you for doing this. I missed all his 80s games, and would love to see more.
Great game. Jordan had 5 blocks or more. Fucking sensational in 1988; defensive player of the year too. @4:36 reverse layup by grant might be his greatest shot ever? Funny how he tried it again later, and Hakeem blocked the shit out of him. I noticed how smart Olajuwon is; he altered his pivot jump shots later in game whenever MJ double teamed him, since MJ blocked him several times earlier. I reckon Olajuwon is scared of Jordan. (Some critics claim that if MJ didn't retire that Rockets would have still won back to back, because Bulls have no defensive answer to Olajuwon. But I disagree with the critics, because Houston has no answer for Jordan. Even with Drexler, they would lose pitiful. Especially if Bulls acquired Rodman in 1994...which is around the time he left Detroit anyway. I'd love to see Rodman guarding Hakeem for a full game.

Allen Leavell was on the level! He looked quick and acrobatic perfect for todays NBA to drive and dish. 5th round pick. Wow. Ralph was ripped. I wish he stayed healthy to provide Hakeem help through the late 80s.
80s players look so wiry strong and low body fat and you can really see how big they all are when the camera gets in closer. I have no proof of this, but i feel the broadcast views have changed through the years where today it makes players look bigger with closer view and back then, the camera was further making them feel smaller, but as soon the camera gets close, you really feel how big everyone is outside of the guards. Gilmore is 7'2 and Ralph 7'4.
It only makes sense the broadcast view is different for cbs, nbc, abc, tnt, tbs, espn, foxsports, local, etc.

This was sampson's last game at houston, to this day it's still a weird trade.
I think a key to the Bulls success that first run before Jordan retired was, they had maybe the most athletic 2, 3, and 4 combo, overall.
I think the most important impact was on defense, especially when Phil Jackson took over. They had to play that top level of defense to win championships. And that athletic trio made that team able to play strong defense in their style of play. It was on the level of the Pistons but it was done differently.
Last year I Watched the 1991-1993 Playoffs on youtube, and the key was defense in the first 3 peat and second 3peat. The Bull's defense was out of this world! When they activated the Full Court Press, it was a thing of Beauty! Both MJ and Scottie, Horace, and Paxon. Later on, in 1993, BJ Armstrong would shut people down; I don't remember BJ's defense in 91 or 92 but 93 WOW. This is why MJ could score 30+ Scottie could get 20+ and the rest of team 9 or ten points because they were shutting the opponent down with their defense.

When Jordan came back in 95, the existing team was better and deeper than the team in 93. Jerry Krause really doesn't get the credit he deserves for building those teams around MJ.

Grant left in free agency, so they would've needed to replace his production. They later got it with Rodman after Jordan's return, but they would've needed it right then.

Jordan is right, lousy commentator is WRONG. Why? Jordan is wise to look at the BALL, and keep his eye on the BALL. watching the trajectory of the ball after release, to determine if the shot is off...so he can position himself for rebound, etc. My couch taught me to keep my eye on THE BALL... NOT the ring. (Sure we look at the ring WHILE SHOOTING, but not after releasing. So many commentators only TALK the TALK, but cannot WALK THE WALK!
