Saw Limp bizkit in the 90s and they had a group of deaf kids there. I spent most of show watching them headbanging it was awesome. Then they signed the "stick it up your ass., stick it up your ass" part. Priceless 🎤😝

Paul Raci is a rather talented actor as well. His parents were deaf, so he's signed all his life - though personally he has no hearing issues.
He's the perfect person for this video and to play the role of Joe in Sound of Metal.

I keep reading all these comments from people expressing their renewed interest in learning ASL and it literally makes me tear up from absolute joy! The impact this could have benefiting the deaf community is immeasurable. Elise, I have been following you for quite some time and have always been astounded by you and your innovative techniques to making music but this is outright a whole other level of brilliance.

ASL has been in quite the films in recent years. Wonderstruck (2017), A Quiet Place (2018), Baby Driver (2017), that new Planet of the Apes films, and even in the Anime A Silent Voice (from 2016). It's not like there's suddenly a wave of ASL in new film or anything, but I like the idea that it's getting people to learn it, if not because they know someone who is deaf, but just so they know it incases. it's pretty cool.
There's a local performer where I live who regularly incorporates ASL into her dance numbers at a variety of events.

    • @skatingcuziwant2
      @skatingcuziwant2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@marioaugusto5408 nothing I suggest will compare imo, this is really a unique picture painted from Elise's mind; though it may be short, it is a masterpiece. Maybe someone else can make a better comparison, but you may look into Flume, Alina Baraz, Gorillaz-Humanz (album), Thundercat, Nathanial Merriweather presents... Lovage: Music to make love to your old lady by. These may be irrelevant actually, there may be a genre I am overlooking that pertains to this. It would be something like electro-wave-chill.
None of these will give you the same futuro-punk city lights in the rain feeling that this little drop evokes, but they all have their own funk going on, different from mainstream, true to the artist's self. Perhaps Elise will make something similar and longer in the near future

This is amazing in so many ways. Until now, I never even considered the fact that sign interpretation of lyrics could add an element to the performance that a hearing person would really enjoy (and learn from). Everyone is a standout talent to be sure, but Paul has hit it out of the park. It's wonderful to see that by doing this, he's bringing music to so many more people.
Thinking about the intro "bass buzz", it occurred to me that as a hearing person, the vibration *felt* is part of the experience. In fact, coincidentally, I was thinking that while listening with headphones a few days ago. They sound great, but there's something missing: the vibration. And, of course, I don't mean the vibration that's transferred to the ear. I mean the vibration you feel via the floor through your feet and internal organs.
This brought me to conclude that "Sonic Shoes" should be a thing. Not just for the deaf or those with hearing impairments (though that would be the primary use case), but to enhance the sensory experience when listening via headphones as well. Somewhere between a massive woofer and a haptic engine, there must be a device that could be fitted into sneakers or shoes to reproduce those low frequencies. Anyway, I like to think it's possible.
Terrific video/performance! I shall watch the movie for sure!

Howdy from UK although my mum wont understand all of the ASL I'm sending this to her right now as I'm sure she will love it!
This is brilliant to see, I dunno about the stats in the US but roughly 1/7 people in the UK are deaf and yet we don't teach BSL as a 'language subject' in schools. Ever since I witnessed the marches here to unify "BSL" (there were different sign languages per region back then) I've always felt Sign language has the potential to adapt and change to become a *world language* benefiting not only deaf people but anyone stuck in a country were they dont know the spoken language.
The first step is getting each countries sign language out there, seen by everyone, get conversations started about the similarities! Its probably an unrealistic goal but its a nice start :)
Also my heart skipped a beat when I saw you were performing with Travis, I grew up on Blink 182 and I recommend you, Elise, as an example of a great modern artist to everyone who is under the flawed impression that exciting music died in the 90s! The vibe of this track is ace, I have to admit I'm having difficulty initially as I adore the original so damn much but I love how this is very much its own track! Very brave to do that and if there is one thing I admire most about your music is that it always feels bold, never feels like your playing it safe!

Such a cool concept by Elise, Travis & Paul. Fantastic visusals.
And you, sir Paul Rici, absolutely killed it in perhaps the best film of 2020 - 'The Sound of Metal'...along with an Oscar worthy turn by the brilliant Riz Ahmed (who was nominated as Best Actor) & the ever lovely, fierce, & intelligence to spare - Olivia Cooke.
Of great import is the group of deaf peers for Riz's character/Paul's 'mentees' + the young children students in a school for the deaf, all contributing to a timeless film of truly moving importance.

I suspect the speakers were not only for the decor, but also to make him feel the vibrations. Deaf people can *love* going out to concerts - in fact, there are a few deaf musicians who play by vibrations, including one of the best classical percussionists ever.

I haven't been "into" Metallica in years but I've always maintained that their songwriting is often overlooked because of their sound. Songs like One, The Unforgiven, Nothing else matters, Until it sleeps, King Nothing and many more are all REALLY well written lyrically.

Hit Like a Girl winner, plays all instruments in her videos, all audio AND video production...probably graduated berklee at the ripe old age of 7... I get the feeling this whole badass concept was primarily hers, but...wow. i saw a metal show at a local bar a few yrs back and there was group of deaf metal heads 🤘 there for the show with an interpreter, signing all the lyrics. Even had some lead singer moves. She was awesome. I thought it was the coolest thing id ever seen.
