Shannon Freeman you can. But you get no coins, which is the main goal of LEGO Super Mario. For example, in the Bowser set, Bowser is not in the way of anything. You only kill him for the coins.

This opens up a massive amount of possibilities. Like, this blows what you can do with legos out of the water.
Forget courses, you could make an entire game like this.
You may be able to put it in water or at the least make on of those under water levels
A board game isn't a bad idea. Or even better, putting the stickers on groceries to keep kids entertained while shopping.
You could make it so that your whole room is a course
Put legos on water with the papers sticked in top of them or you can even make a lego boat and like the course is about getting out of the boat do some parkour and then fo back to it, In other words you can make anything with this lol

I did too, I actually figured it out the 1st day Lego Mario was revealed surprises me it took people this long to figure it out!

One thing I learned early on when I got LEGO Mario is that Mario will react to any object that is a different color. For example, Mario once took the tip of my finger for being a red LEGO piece and reacted as if he were standing on fire. You can also try this with the different colors printed on the boxes the sets come in. Mario doesn't know the difference.

It reminded me of the world 6 boss in New super Mario bros with the lava to in it ya could jump on the goomba from high platform mushrooms to beat it and it was giant so it did take like 5 or 6 hits to take it down.

Mario for me always falls off the cloud and the turn table devices but if he could just sit on them that would be awesome like how that pull system was that was the cloud bar code.

Now all we need to do is figure out how to make our own barcodes with our own commands
They arnt commands, sry. They are just predetermined reactions that are programmed into mario that mario defines when he meets x barcode.
Even if we cannot do that,we may be able to trick Mario into thinking that they're one thing when they're actually another,by just making an enemy with a barcode that fits the best.For example:we can use Koopa,Spiny or Podoboo barcodes on a Magikoopa,while using Bowser Jr.'s,or if you want a bigger challenge Bowser's barcode for Kamek.Amirite?

Thank you for all the replies. There is a video on the internet that already takes apart Mario. And I seen in that video there seems to be only one chip that seems to be controlling the entire thing. I don't know how much security Nintendo put into Mario but if we could access it maybe all the animations would be stored in a file and how they're triggered would be in the same file so maybe we can make custom animations was custom triggers
