- San Francisco authorities have added suicide-deterrent nets to the sides of the Golden Gate Bridge. The steel nets are designed to offer a second chance to those struggling with mental health issues. The installation has already shown progress, according to officials.

Nets like these were added around our local Shopping Mall high rise car park because of the huge number of suicides. It's not until you get to know security staff they explain how frequent suicide attempts are. Especially around Christmas time. I'm very surprised it's taken so long for nets to be added to the Golden Gate Bridge

I remember hearing a guy story who actually ended up jumping, but survived. He said he took a bus there and was crying profusely the whole way there and said if just one person asked him what was wrong he probably wouldn't have went through with it. Glad that guy survived and also glad that this cop was here for this guy.

Just imagine the number of people who leaped from that bridge and regretted it on the way down. That is truly heartbreaking to think about, at least this net does give them a second chance.

My teachers son jumped off that bridge and committed suicide… it’s so sad my teacher cried a lot during our lecture. :( I hope these nets helps people.

Golden gate bridge is 4200ft long, or 8400ft of netting on both sides. $224M comes out to over $26,000 per feet of netting. Wow

The designed to cause serious injury part sounds like a problem to me. "Like falling through a cheese grater" is horrific. You lived, but now you're disfigured/ disabled with huge medical bills... sure that'll make you less depressed.

I’ll get personal here: I’ve been in that dark place before. I didn’t think I was going to get out. When I would think about how I would do it, all I could picture in my mind was someone trying to talk to me and ask me what was wrong. In my mind that’s what I wanted so badly in my world: someone just to take their time to ask me what was wrong and comfort me. I wanted someone to care and someone to validate my feelings. People go through this every day and through my difficult time, I’ve learned to be more compassionate and open minded.

That still doesn't help much. I feel like a glass bottle shattering from inside after landing on the ground. All my hopes,dreams and aspirations have been crushed by the ones whom i once loved. I've learnt to stay alone and truly love myself. The pain never ends and extreme rage and agony grows day by day. Despair and hopelessness is strangling my neck. Family is the major reason and cause for suicides. When your own family isn't concerned about your well being how can one trust some random strangers? People may seem nice on the exterior but nobody knows their true motives, intentions and feelings. I've learnt to stay away from people.

My cousin committed suicide on the golden gate bridge last month. There's nothing you can change to stop a person that's determined to commit suicide.
You can stop a determined person if you preach Jesus Christ to them, most people have no idea who that is.

We need to figure out why people are jumping. Fix that problem first on top of all the other issues SF already has.
It's because the American dream isn't real. Just a fairy tale and these people realized that early in life.
The guy who didnt jump from the bridge is so strong and im so happy for him that he managed to pull through despite feeling like there was no way out. I lost my friend recently tp suicide and it is the worst exeperience in any way you can imagine. You might not think youre loved or that youre at fault for feeling the way you do but it isn’t, it’s not easy to struggle and it’s not shameful to feel suicidal. I wish we as a society would do more to reach out to people and that we do our best in our private lives to not joke and be nonchalant about topics on suicide. Always openly talk about it without judgement and be there for those that need it if possible.
It’s not about being loved or if you have guilt. Life is just meaningless for some people.
@@Boomhauersdad i’m a social work student and a lot of research say the things I mentioned are common thoughts people might have. The meaninglessness is another symptom among many and of course it’s not only feelings or psychological circumstances that play a role by itself, it can also be financially or things you completely outside of your control but essentially support is needed regardless in every way possible and the primary way to help is with therapy so that the person can find enough strength to work on getting better and survive.
I’ve also struggled with suicidality most of my life, my experience is unique to me but you share a lot of common themes and suffering with others who struggle with it as well so you can still know the feeling and mindset of what it’s like. And my friend had those feelings, i was mostly talking about my experience with him. There were things out of his control but his darkest times he would blame it on himself when it wasn’t his fault and he never told me or any other friend because he didn’t want us to worry. In his upbringing it was shameful to talk about mental health so there’s that as well. He had even written in his letter he felt guilty.
@@GoldenShrike i think the main reason for it is that for most people there is no help that exists, i have been seeing therapists and psych doctors for almost 20 years and ive been suicidal for just as long, and i have yet to come across one single competent person. its extremely disheartening seeing over 100 therapists and not getting help it makes the hopelessness worse.
funny how they don’t mention how much the city overpaid for these nets. it ended up being more than the cost to build the entire bridge itself adjusted for inflation. that money could’ve been used to “overhaul mental health”.
I remember reading about this when I was at Fort Point Park in 2021. I am glad that this is helping a lot of people, and thank you for covering the story.

I love that this project was conceptualized, that bridge is an absolute architectural marvel and I always found it unfortunate that it was so heavily associated with the idea of suicide. It's great to hear that the nets have proven effective at deterring people from making the worst decision of their lives as well, great idea all around.

I’m not trying to be dourly critical of American society or modern western society in general (there are many good things and bright spots) but overall I think people need to start looking at root causes of moral degradation in society that causes people to feel hopeless and commit suicide. There are many moral and economic injustices , oppressions, suppressions, and violence that make people feel hopeless. Maybe it’s not the people, maybe it’s the society that PRODUCES the people.

I've lost 2 really good friends to that bridge. Unfortunately those nets didn't save them, but I really hope in the future they will save someone else's loved one

That’s a great idea and I don’t know why this wasn’t done sooner. I wish this kind of thing was on all bridges, my dad took his own life by jumping off a bridge in 2019 and I was/am still devastated by the loss. It hurts knowing that he may have had a moment of regret before it was all over :/

After the nets were installed I wonder how many jumpers actually changed their mind after hitting the net vs the jumpers who hit the net first and then continue their suicidal jump by going over the net?
apparently they're not made of life-saving rope or whatever, but nearly paralyzing steel so it depends on just how incapacitated they are & if they'd even be able to pull themselves off the grate-like area..

First they check to see if any good fish were caught. Then they haul it up and pull out any druggies and loonies.

The fact of the matter is that most suicides are done on impulse, the doom and pain become so bad for a moment that you lose sight of everything else. This is why the "no going back" methods are often the deadliest.. because you dont get that moment to reflect and put things into perspective.
I really wish we could address the deep causes of these societal issues that many other first world nations do not have to the same degree

There are many mental health help in California. When going to see a primary care doctor for the first time, there is a list of mental health questions to answer. They can set up appointments for counseling within days

I used to work in a psychiatric hospital in Belmont (no longer existant thanks to managed care HMO bullhockey and union-busting ownership) and one of our patients did eventually jump. Horror when we found out later a tourist or someone taking pictures there wound up with a photo that had her midair in the frame.
She was a lovely woman, so troubled.

That’s the crazy thing. $224 million for netting that is pointless. Because they can jump down and the netting can catch them and then they can just jump off of the netting. That and how did they get down from the netting and how does anybody know they are there in order to rescue them? And, by the time rescue crew get to them… They’re probably gonna jump off of the net anyways. I just don’t understand the logic and the money wasted when they have so many homeless that they could take a piece of land or an old mall or factory and turn into housing or simply build tiny houses for them.
For $224 million, you figure if each tiny house costs $15,000, which is the size for a nice one at Home Depot… Or you could have one of Elon Musk’s nice ones for around the same price… that’s about 15,000 tiny houses. You could have 15 to 30,000 people in one of those. Unreal. Obviously, somebody is embezzling money somewhere spending that kind of money on this stupid project. I understand that they need to help with suicide… but generally, those committing suicide could either use mental health or financial help. Where the money could be better spent.
Especially since they said what? Only 3% of suicidal people jump from that bridge… Seems like a lot of money to spend for 3%. When, you could just make at least 15,000 people happy by building them a tiny house and then they might not be suicidal in the first place.

I love how California will spend 230 million dollars to save 2,000 people over 90 years. The chances that the thing lasts 90 years a slim to none. Why not just give the money to the people that come to jump? 230 million is 115k per person.

Only 3% of yearly suicides in the Bay Area were done from that bridge. Now with the netting in place, it will only cause that small percent to find another way. It was an expensive but futile gesture. The majority of us Bay Area residents were against it.

There's so much I can see wrong with this..
1. The absurd price tag just to install nets, government inefficiency as usual
2. Someone who intends on suicide is unfortunately just going to find a different location
3. All that money went to this band-aid solution and not towards tackling the root causes of bad mental health
4. You now have a constant reminder of suicide on the side of your city's iconic bridge (although it is a good, ugly reminder of the problem)

Our High bridge have no nets, they only made the walkpath surrounded by steel cage. None can jump since but they all went to the undergrounds to get hit by a metro train 🤷♂.
They designed a steel safety net that will hurt someone if they fell on it. Now they will use it as a diving platform.

I watched a documentary about this bridge and the suicides years ago. It was incredibly sad. I just wish people would be more kind because you never know what someone is going through.
I'm glad this young person was saved by this wonderful man. My daughter's ex-boyfriend committed suicide almost a year ago and it's a sadness that she has to live with forever that haunts me too. People care and will help you if you ask. My daughter's ex acted like everything was ok the last time he talked to her. Then he went out and threw himself in front of a train in the middle of the night. All he had to do was ask and I would have dropped everything to meet him and talk to him but I was clueless that he had spiraled so low.
It's not that easy to ask for help when you have been let down so many times before. It forces you to be have no trust or faith

this is great, however if someone is suicidal, they need real help. by putting nets it means nobody will die on this bridge, but there are thousand other bridges, and ropes, this realistically won’t stop ANY suicides, if someone was feeling that low, a single bridge having a net wouldn’t stop them from other methods, unfortunate but true
