Thank God! I mean what was the point of this, the car is broke all the time, they could have done the same thing with an horse and covered wagon... The horses did the work. besides look at all those trees and all that junk they packed into the rainforest. This is pretty typical of classic British explorers, doing something full of shit, while being full of shit, for shit reasons. think of all the damage they did to the rainforest all the trees they cut down. Think about all the junk they packed through there. if you want a pan American highway just use a ferry system like we do in Alaska.

Did I miss the memo about there being no men left on Earth? Let’s not kid ourselves that there’s plenty of hardy explorers around. Also, languages and pronunciation evolve. That clipped Queen’s English that you enjoy was always spoken by the minority anyway but it’s still around in certain social echelons.
I know these types of videos invoke a feeling of the ‘good old days’ but the core components of this type of exploration are still around today. We just go about it in a more considerate way that appeals to more audiences.

First off all i must say how happy i am to be able to see this documentory about the Darien Gap. I was too very much inspirered from the Darien Gap and the later Camel Trophy. Thank you so much for putting it on your channel,i have never been able to get a copy of this epic journey.
And the succes in getting the vehicles back on track after blowing all these diffs is down to one man only, the humble down to earth guy Geoff Miller.
The army insanely oberloaded the vehicle to the point that they still had all their cold weather equipment on board in the middle of the rain forrest. I was also his idea to use a third vehicle and even sourched this already partly wrecked S2a 88 by a local dealer.
Epic journey made by epic man and women.
As for your own RR on a trailer bit..........like you said,it's all about the journey. And driving across Aussie in a '77 Range Rover is like journey of my dreams. Only downside is fuel consumption, but as a fellow ex. Suffix A RR owner i think you know how heavy they can be on fuel.
Just make sure everythinv is serviced and function as it was intended and you'll be fine.
I envy you a little bit, enjoy the journey down memory land,Andrew. You deserve it.

I too agree with the transition of the Camel trophy to the G4 challenge - I remember watching the first G4 and feeling extremely disappointed - No more G4 from then on, only reruns of the Camel Trophy proper. Having grown up with camping and 4wd in the 80s, the Camel trophy, Malcolm Douglas & the Leyland Brothers further fueled my sense for adventure and isolation.

I have always been curious about the Darien gap, and heard about the several expeditions that when through it. I was so glad that you digitized this film so I could see it. It answered some long standing questions I had about the route through the gap. I now understand better why the gap was so difficult to cross. It is a shame no one followed through to complete the road that the British army had blazed. What a wonderful thing it would be if it would be completed! Imagine being able to drive the whole distance from Artic to Antarctic regions!

The first that I learned of the Darian Gap was in the book, "Ten Years on Two Wheels," by Norwegian Helge Pedersen. His was a two man struggle with a BMW gs motorcycle. Brutal.

I remember hearing about this when i was a kid, there were so many people around this time doing crazy adventures, i've just finished reading a book about this, Making the Range Rover Legend, it's very good. I'm also reading about people that took hovercraft up rivers is Tibet and the Amazon. Crazy times, people don't seem to do this sort of thing anymore.

Don't sully this wonderful channel with those wanks. 4wd action/ 4wd 24/7 have created and ruined a major part of the industry.

    Heh,
I've been to the motor museum, stood in exactly the same spot and looked at that RRC and probably had exactly the same thoughts - what would it be like to be out there, making it up as you go along, having only the stuff you brought with you to rely on... and be able to keep going and going and going.
Genuinely, one of the last great pioneering adventures that we've achieved on this planet, IMO.
Also, I marvelled at how the rear hatch on that RRC was entirely rust-free, but I digress.

Can not thank you enough for finding and sharing this Gem of a footage.A bit like you my connection and inspiration started in West Africa, first memories are as 5 year boy [1973]and the sight of a white Range Rover that dad went away for days in to inspect Tea and Coffee plantations on a plateau bordering the Republic of Cameroon,it looked soo majestic and mythical especially when he would tell us how treacherous the journey was.Later he had a 1978 Tuscan Blue locally assembled one by BEWAC Nigeria Ltd.Many beautiful memories of travels in that, till it was involved in an accident and I went to see it the last time at his office with a very sad heart. That passion led to working for land Rover from 1994 - 2012 in different countries.have a rare automatic 1981 and really looking forward to finishing some maintenance and repairs. If you need some tinkering to the RR,let me know as I'm in Melbourne.
