    If you recall -- when the Lannister twins were born, Cersei was born first... followed by Jaime, who was holding her foot. When Jaime's hand was cut off, it's almost like the link between he and Cersei was severed as well.

All I can see is her dying under the Red Keep with Jaime, but in my personal view, it's actually a betrayal of Jaime's entire arc, and not as relevant to Cersei's arc. Weeeelllll getting crushed by the Red Keep is an apt metaphor, but it just doesn't match up with any of the foreshadowing or established symbolism. They could have simply wrote Jamie strangling her. Have him not randomly turn on Brienne. George literally set them up for a really easy ending that would be sufficiently satisfying. Maybe it would be a bit "too obvious" but they certainly weren't capable of writing anything better.

    I know I'm late but maybe cersei is so critical of other women's appearance because it also serves as a way to comfort herself that the younger, more beautiful queen that is destined to overthrow her hasn't appeared yet. That way her rejecting other women as unattractive instead becomes her unwilling to give up power.

      What are you talking about? Episode 3 & 4, yes, very bad writing. Episode 5, no sir. Now no matter what D&D would do, previously disappointed people will always keep complaining & find more reasons to justify their criticism. Think & speak, this episode literally or metaphorically fulfilled everything that was set up in the “series", not the books. If fan theories didn't come to life, it's not the show's fault. You can always go & read the books if you're not satisfied, because GOT, as a series, was never meant to satisfy anyone completely with their fantasies.

She did cruel things to the masters in Meereen but she had her reasoning behind that. She has never been cruel to the common folk and has always wanted to help people. She even locked up her two dragons because of the damage they've done. Hence, what happened in King's landing was really out of her character and that's bad writing

At this point she is only interested in fulfilling her long time desire to restore her family name & become the queen of the seven kingdoms & beyond & will stop at no loose ends. A perfectly logical reason if you're a true fan who knows the series in & out. This episode is nowhere near bad compared 3 & 4 with so many plot holes.

By itself not much, but the next chapter on her way to the sept for the first time to meet the high sparrow she complains about how her gown doesn’t fit anymore, and she hadn’t worn this gown in a while and can’t blame someone for it’s tightness

    The other part of her emulation of Tywin is that she seems to (in the books) only half listen to Tywin's lessons. Like the one about Robert wiping out the Iron Isles. Tywin literally tells Joffrey when he's being Joffrey that you need to both give fire and blood for defiance but then raise people up that bend the knee or else no one would ever bend to you. She just stops at the fire and blood part. It's like she just mimicks what she saw him do without clear understanding of the why. Show Tywin had it right about her: It's not just that she's a woman it's that she's not as smart as she thinks she is.

    Tywin told Cersei that he doesn't mistrust her because she's a woman, he mistrusts her because she isn't as smart as she thinks she is. Father knows his daughter well. Yes, Tywin is a horrible monster but even he only kills those who cross him or pose a threat, he isn't overly friendly or nice to anyone but unlike Cersei he doesn't just hate every single person. Jamie did say that Cersei likes no one but her children. Yara neither has dragons, nor did she have a father who loved her unconditionally, she endured her father and became who she wanted to. Cersei was afraid of her father, of Robert, of her son, everything she did, she did because she was a miserable human being. She didn't love her kids or even Jamie. Ofc, Jamie is responsible for the part that he played in that relationship but Cersei unknowingly or knowingly perhaps, had a relationship with Jamie, to slap Tywin Lannister metaphorically. She really wanted to be the one Tywin considered extremely talented, she knew that Tyrion wouldn't get anything but seduced Jamie and bound him by having kids with him. Jamie was the heir, by every right, he could have married a beautiful woman, he could have had kids of his own, could have had a good life. She made sure both her brothers seemed incapable in Tywin's eyes, she didn't have to do much in Tyrion's case. She never realized that Tywin was a miserable human himself, that he could not give her that validation that she desperately craved. One of the reasons why she was an overprotective mother yet wasn't a good mother at all. One of the reasons she hated the Starks so much, they had power but above everything they cared about family and people of the North. Why she hated Sansa so much, Ned got his head cut off because he believed in his 13 year old daughter so much yet her father doesn't even believe her even as a woman. She hated everyone.

    17:11 "Ironically it isn't Maggy's prophecy, so much as Cersei's _fear_ of the prophecy". As Varys would say : "Prophecies are fulfilled when men believe in them, no more no less. They're tricks. Shadows on the wall." All fulfilled prophecies are self-fulfilled prophecies, as we can already observe from the prophecies of ancient Greek drama and some historical accounts - where in the place of Maggy the Frog there was Pythia ("Πυθία"), the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi.
    Interestingly the name "Pythia" itself betrays precisely the above function : "Πυθία" is an ancient Greek version of the modern Greek word "πειθώ" , which simply means "persuasion". Hence if the subjects of the various prophecies did not buy what Pythia said, and in particular did not fear and try to avoid the events of the negative prophecies, then they were safe from them.
    Of course almost everyone believed the pure BS the various Pythias sold them, because supposedly the prophecies (or, quite often, utter ramblings due to intoxication) were dictated by the god Apollo himself..
    By the way, excellent analysis as always, with a very professional looking presentation.

"The accounts made it clear that death did not occur as a result of suicide, but was a self-willed death caused by unconscious will. As a result of a malevolent spell or a curse, the individual felt a breakdown of communications or their good relationship with divine powers. In all cases, the person’s belief that they would shortly die was of crucial importance. Also Robert was quick to anger but quick to cool and a charismatic friendly guy. Hehe. Loras is waaay too beautiful to threaten Cersei.
      In seriousness I wonder if it ends up being Sansa.
      Cersei is the person responsible for having Sansa's wolf "Lady" executed. I re-read this chapter today and it is incredibly emotional, because of the pure callousness of Cersei (Sansa and Lady had nothing to do with the reason why Cersei has Lady executed). As a character Cercei's only satisfaction is to triumph over others (who hurt her son in this instance), no matter the means.
      Having Lady killed, was the beginning of the awakening of Sansa (symbolically killing the sleeping naive girl in order to become the awakened woman). Jon goes through this transition too. When this happens in a girls life moving into womanhood, there's usually a significant gargantuan ugly moment that awakens them from their blissful ignorant slumber into the awakened carnage of reality. The story of Bluebeard is an example of this awakening of a maiden to the horrors of reality.
      Sansa is married to Tyrion and literally has her own debt to pay for murdering Lady. But I suppose the logical progression for Sansa is to focus on removal of Littlefinger. That seems a like a boring conclusion. I'd much prefer a leftfield outcome we'd never expect =)

    Interesting note on the torture of the Blue Bard, it actually seems like Cersei feels a bit bad. Or that she can't stomach this sort of stuff. But also that her father is STILL a major influence on her choice to be so cruel:
    'The razor flashed, the singer shrieked. On his chest a wet red eye wept blood. Cersei felt ill. Part of her wanted to close her eyes, to turn away, to make it stop. But she was the queen and this was treason. *Lord Tywin would not have turned away.'*

Tywin tells Cersei to trust “[themselves] alone” and let’s her see the bodies of dead children hanging above the gates of Casterly Rock when she was nothing but a child herself, teaching her that paranoia and excessive cruelty are ok. But OOOH, when she turns to be excessively cruel and paranoid AF, Tywin has the nerve to be all “oH ma GAwd, whY ArE yoU LIkE thIs???” Hypocritical fuck and no right to be giving other people criticism. Literally the only difference between Jaime and Cersei is that Jaime got lucky enough to find someone that could change him where Cersei did not. I LOVE the theory of Brienne being the 'more beautiful one' who would take everything away from Cercei, which I was not familiar with before now. Even ignoring the idea of inner beauty (which I certainly will not!), we have already seen hints in the book that Cercei's own beauty is diminishing quickly, partly due to her new fondness for drinking and partly due to aging. I also suspect that as she grows more and more like the Mad King, giving in to paranoia and rage, she too will grow more ragged and unsightly over time. Throw in some mishaps with wildfire, and it may get bad enough that Brienne might actually start looking attractive by comparison.

    "I don't respect you not because you're a woman, but because you're not nearly as clever as you think you are." - Tywin to Cercei
    For her supposed complexities, she's still a very shallow and self-centered character with too many flaws to make her redeemable. Hell, even GRRM said that Cercei's only redeemable trait is that she is a caring mother. For a good amount of the series her goal was to build her children up, but after they die she loses that purpose and the only thing she sought was power and power alone. And worst of all, in these pursuits of power her ego lets her way overstep on her power grabs that will only mean her ruin by the end of it all. She makes it no secret she does not respect anyone, and that open disdain for most people only has people respond in kind. All her moves are for her ego, and if a move she makes means more perceived power she will take it without ever considering the consequences.
    Tywin, while egocentric, made sure that every move he made was heavily calculated. He always positioned himself to be on the winning side and the respect of his followers was paramount to maintaining power. He clawed and obtained the absolute power that Cercei pines for, but recognized the need for subtlety like you addressed in the video. Playing the Game of Thrones isn't just about subjugating those beneath you and climbing to the top, it's a complex series of stepping stones, some forcing you to move two steps back before you can make 3 steps forward, and Tywin recognized this. Cercei however lets her frustrations and fears get the better of her and will be the vehicle of her own self-fulfilling prophecy.
    For all that has wronged her in life, she has not been dealt the worst hand by any means but she's been playing her cards in all the wrong ways. As you said the more she fights the more she loses, and will inevitably be the one who puts the final nails in her own coffin as a result. She has driven everyone away like the mad king and will ironically have the Kingslayer once again live up to his name by killing the person he once swore to protect

      When Jaime returns to KL, Cersei had just lost her son, who was murdered. She felt utterly vulnerable to her enemies. She wanted Jaime to be what he has always been, her sword. To fight with her against those threatening their family. But what was Jaime doing? Going on and on about them getting married and revealing their incest to everyone. It was absurd and her anger towards him was an impatient reaction to that.
      She didn't understand that Jaime was going through an identity crisis at the time. Because yes he lost a hand but he was still her Jaime. She didn't see him differently. But he did. They were two people in need, neither in a position to give. This is why they fell apart.

Once on top, there is only one way to go. The caracter might make for TV entertainment but I don't like her. To be honest when I rewatch GOT I skip everything Cersei. She had to marry Tyrion, who wanted to marry another woman, who his father wouldn’t allow. Bolton only married her to solidify his right over Winterfell.
    Cersei can’t be with Jaime, Jaime can’t be with her. Now that she’s queen, and can do what she wants, Jaime seems to recognize her insanity and selfishness, and probably wouldn’t be with her if he could.
    Danny cannot he with either Jorah or Dario, the man she wanted to be with died of septic. She cannot be with Jon so long as he refuses to bend the knee, Jon isn’t interested in her so long as the White Walkers pose a threat.
    This list could go on, and on, and on.

      And it makes me think of how ironic that if Tywin had raised them right, he could've molded them into a powerhouse team, forged them into a united front for the Lannisters where they use their strengths together, even if they didn't love each other (I can't imagine Cersei caring about Tyrion even they had happier childhoods) they might've been able to work together. Instead he was (understandably) caught up with politics, and (less understandably) abusive to at least one of them with such prejudice which inevitably enabled their family dysfunction.

    I wanted Cersei to become the mad queen. I understand Daenerys showed it all the time but was almost to easy. I imagined her starting to burn the town but then snap out of it, realizing she was nothing more then Cersei. Cersei even thought her own children betrayed her by leaving her (dying) & that was one of the big differences between her & Dani. They mirror eachother in many ways but Dani loves her children, even in death. So by having Dani snap out of it, could have been the last straw for Cersei so she just starts burning it down herself in a If I cant have the throne no one will & Dani tries to save the people instead & whomever is the valonqar kills Cersei & ends it. We would have gotten a mad queen but without loosing two strong women. Would have been my ideal end :) Hoping thats is how its gonna play out in the book since we didnt get it in the series.

    I take issue with the statement that "Robert loved Lyanna". They go to great lengths in both versions of the story to show us that Robert loved an idea that he had that LOOKED like Lyanna. That is called "infatuation" not "love". Plus a good 45% of that supposed love came from the fact that marrying her would make his best friend his brother ("by-law"). The other 55% stemmed from the fact that she was pretty and had a wild spirit. Who she actually was underneath that didn't seem to factor in.
    Book-Ned is so frustrated by Robert's constant pining away for the perfect life he thinks he would've had with his fantasy version of Lyanna that at one point he blurts out "You didn't even know her." Show-Robert openly admits that he can't even remember what she looked like. Because what she looked like and who she actually was is not important. What she represented to him is all he knows of her.

    • @becki8000
      @becki8000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Very well put, plus I would add Robert hated kingship, he liked rebellion and fighting but afterwards grew fat and bored- Lyanna represents that 'happy' rebellion period.

    • @paulchambers8135
      @paulchambers8135 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      agree, but infatuation is the wrong word because by definition infatuation is short-lived. I would say Robert was obsessed with the idea of Lyanna, not the person who Lyanna was.

    • @zardox78
      @zardox78 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Coach Cro Does Robert seem emotionally dead to you? I'd say he's having a pretty damn good time in 50% of the scenes he's in. Sometimes he was angry or morose. But he obviously still had plenty of live emotions.
      But to answer your question, sure. It just depends on how much you've built it up in your own mind. Hell, you can wallow in self-pity for the rest of your life for any old random reason. People do it all the time. He fought a huge war and ended a dynasty, ostensibly for a chick who just wasn't all that into him. But the fantasy version of her in his mind was just as crazy about him as he was about her. That person never actually existed.
      Yes, this is an extreme case of infatuation fueled by insane circumstances. So if you want to argue semantics, there may be a more apt term to describe an infatuation that has been built up over years and years to such ludicrous proportions. "Obsession" maybe?

    • @coachcro7722
      @coachcro7722 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm not that sure. I'd put the probability for Tyrion lower (maybe 5-10%, at least for the books, I think it's not interesting story-wise) and increase that for "someone else" to 15-20%
      Valyrian doesn't have genders. Thus, the valonqar could also be a little sister. Moreover, it doesn't say YOUR valonqar, just THE valonqar 13:29. So, it could be any little sister or brother. Some people think it's going to be Arya, Cersei is on her death list.
      Interestingly, there's precedence for the potential male misinterpretation of a gender-neutral prophecy. Before his death, maester Aemon convinces himself that Daenerys is the prince that was promised, because the prince was gender-neutral in the valyrian prophecy, so it could also be a princess that was promised and according to Aemon all the other signs fit as well.
      My bets are still on Jaime, though. It would be beautiful, dramatic, a 180 degree turn for the Jaime from earlier while at the same time being a repetition of history (mad king Aerys) and a conclusion to Jaime's redemption arc.

    When you think about it the prophecy is actually harmless, especially in the show. "You will marry the king" quiet harmless already. "A younger, more beautiful queen will cast you down." Unless she planning on dying early or marrying her son Cersie will be cast down by another Queen since her son, the king, will need to marry. "You will have 3 childeren... gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds" you will have 3 childeren with golden hair(I think thats what it means or maybe 'gold crowns' means her childerens power will come from Lannister gold) and they will die. Like no shit, everyone dies. It doesn't even say that they will die young. Valenquar is the only part of the prophecy thats directly ominous and even that doesn't mean Cersies younger brother just a younger brother.
    If Cersie wasn’t such a bad person maybe she could have lived a long happy life and would be killed crying tears off happines at an event or smthing when a younger borther just assassinate her when she is in her late 90s because someone lost a bet to her or smthing. That would fulfill the prophecy compeletely when her childerens eventually died as well.

      Man, I've been saying this for years! It's OBVIOUS it will be Sansa. She is commonly declared to be very beautiful and she will _absolutely_ be Queen of the North sooner or later.
      It's poetic since Cersei has been trying to kill Sansa for years and it will be Sansa who kills Cersei. Perhaps while thanking her for all she has taught her. :P
      I believe Sansa will have Sandor as her 'protector' and perhaps even Jamie will be with her when she comes to take King's Landing so there's a valanquor or two. Take your pick.

      The prophecy doesn’t say another queen, it just says another younger and more beautiful, to cast you down. That’s the qualifier. Cersei made herself queen without claim. Could be anyone. I like the idea of Maggy giving her an FU.

    She hears prophesies that she doesn't want to come true, then immediately fulfills one of them by killing her friend. First thing she does and she's already ensuring them.
    Imagine she instead just stays in her room with her friend all night and morning comes and her friend is alive. Then the witch is wrong and she can stop worrying about all the rest!

    Alf Shift X I want to say thank you for making all the videos you have made. I know you probably get this comment allot, but please believe me when I say that your work is more appreciated then you know. It was a year ago that I got into GOT and I admit I was worried about getting into a series this complex. However before I read any of the books your videos made everything so easy to understand and its because of your work that I enjoy the series so much. It takes allot of time to make a masterpiece such as this, so thank you for making these videos to help people understand the world GRRM has created. Cheers. :)

    It's bitterly ironic that, for all her complaints about the patriarchal society of the Seven Kingdoms, Cersei ends up one of the biggest misogynists in Westeros.

    She's essentially the dark inversion of Daenerys; where as Dany embraces her womanhood and "mother of dragons" persona despite being ostensibly infertile, Cersei curses her female identity and projects this massive insecurity onto friends and foes alike.

    • @simsdiver5201
      @simsdiver5201 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, she recently came to celebrate her womanhood/fertility (however very privately) with her 4th incestuous pregnancy by Jamie. A dark secret that only she and now Tyrion know as of S7.

      @@simsdiver5201 I wouldn't consider that 'celebrating' her womanhood, I don't think it's very relevant to the point. Her other pregnancies by Jamie doesn't invalidate anything the video said about her cursing her womanhood.

    You're thinking too hard. On TV, Cersei will die in some utterly banal, predictable way, because D&D's writing has ruined a great series.
    In the books, Cersei will never die, because GRRM will never, never, never, never, never, never, finish the f#$&ing thing.

      @@thorbeorn4295 Well (sigh! _ cos I do regard myself as a GRRM fan) _ he reminds me of something C.S.Lewis (I think it was) said, that it is SO easy for us to keep telling ourselves we want something when we do not really want it (or no longer want it). I'm sure many of us know this feeling from having to meet deadlines or finish tasks.
      We know he doesn't have writer's block, because he can churn out huge books like "Fire And Blood" or "The World Of Ice And Fire" _ and doesn't appear to need much time to do so.
      Most of the rest of his time seems to be spent chuckling his way through big public interviews, if TH-cam is anything to go by. I don't claim to know anything about being an author, but I've seen people who do saying that, in writing as in many other fields, if you want to stop a person finishing a task, the easiest way is to get them to talk about it.
      GRRM often says that he originally started ASOIAF because, in his previous jobs writing film scripts, he felt so restricted by editors who imposed deadlines and wanted to set limits to the amounts of characters and settings, and that in ASOIAF he was hell-bent on creating as many characters and worlds as he damn well pleased.
      I think GRRM's frustrated readers are now realising that those editors may have had a point.
      In 1996, when he wrote Book 1, GRRM had 2 incentives to get the damn thing finished: (a)money, and (b)success. He doesn't need either of those things anymore. Now, the only reason he has to finish is _ just because he says he will. Unfortunately, that doesn't put any *pressure* on.
      Finally, in 1996, and probably later, GRRM was doing it for FUN _ he enjoyed it. In recent interviews, I've heard him use the word "fun" about "Fire And Blood" and "The World Of Ice And Fire" _ but NOT about ASOIAF. (I'm not saying he *definitely* hasn't said it, but I haven't heard it.)
