The conspiracy theories were what really put me off Shane, the way he constantly took things at face value and treated the wildest things as truth while having such a loyal impressionable audience was so concerning, especially when he was talking about real life deaths. The irony of him talking about how there are powers trying to brainwash people while actively spreading poorly researched misinformation has only become more tragic now that we've seen the impact of misinformation with regards to things like the Covid pandemic and white nationalism and the millions of lives that suffer as a result
But at the same time, when did he ever present any “Theory” (important word btw) as a fact? Theory’s aren’t facts. You don’t need to believe it, if you aren’t stupid. Stupid people deserve to think stupid things are real. It’s part of natural selection.
There are companies trying to manipulate us; we call them advertisers and the tech giants are spending a lot of money researching how to get us to respond positively to internet ads.
@@Tensolin01 yeah but when those "stupid people" are just kids who haven't developed proper skills in critical thinking and would be inclined to believe someone they idolize, i.e. his entire audience... then yeah it becomes dangerous to spread this kind of misinformation like it's fact. As was said in this video, 9/11 "trutherism" is often a gateway into much more dangerous conspiracy thinking, with much realer consequences - like white nationalism for example. Giving young kids essentially the tools to start down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories isn't a responsible use of a platform of Shane's size.
As an old Shane fan, I hate how stupid and naive I was and believed everything he said. I supported him through everything up until the Breaking My Silence video came out. I’m 16 now and it’s a slap in the face that I believed everything he said. I believed a lot of his conspiracies because I trusted him and now I feel stupid. Obviously as a young teen when I supported him I didn’t see the need to look things up and check his facts cause I believed he wouldn’t lie. I’m glad I don’t support him anymore and I hate that I bought his makeup pallet. If he comes back (and let’s hope he doesn’t), I’m not going to support him anymore
I'm so glad people are talking about this now. When I was a teenager I used to be a fan of Shane's conspiracy videos and, even though I didn't realise it at the time, it definitely affected my thinking and I went down a bit of a rabbit hole, which I only escaped after I stopped watching his content. Becky from Alabama would rather her kid dies of meningitis than risk the vaccine somehow melting her sons brain and make him autistic, DUH!
I think my comment may have been automatically deleted because it was assumed I was promoting ideas I was actually against. Basically, Shane has a history of getting his conspiracy theories from dangerous sources that promote dangerous ideas except he’d use more dog whistles within his own content. Dangerous for anyone who looked further into the topics he promoted. There’s a particular example that comes to mind but I don’t think I’ll be allowed to describe it in the TH-cam comment section. He also made multiple “conspiracy theory” videos apparently trying to out Dan and Phil, which he’d conclude by accusing them of qu*erbaiting (they’ve both since come out). So there’s that..
So I used to watch him as mindless entertainment to play in the background. At the time, it was all too stupid to believe, so I never thought critically about anything. But 2020 opened my eyes to how vulnerable people can become to dangerous conspiracies. With the right conditions, people can believe anything. At the end of the day, the dude can post whatever he wants. But I'm glad the wider consciousness around him has changed. I'm glad his audience has either left him as I did, or now consume his shit way more critically

My favorite part about 9/11 "predictions" is all these people who apparently don't know that the Twin Towers got bombed in the early 90s, I believe it was, so some of these show's "predictions" are actually just referencing that thing that already happened. (Related, some of the "Simpsons predicted Trump running for president! :O" shit is a reference to him ALREADY running for president in like 2000)
I think you just had good enough media reading skills to not get affected by them. I knew all the theories were ridiculous, I just loved entertaining the thought of how easily you can make them sound logical. I didn't realize how many actually believed them.
As a Jew, I agree with the statement that believing in dumb nonsense can lead to dangerous results. Especially when an authority figure is telling you about it. “spooooooky”
"The mountain comes to Manhatten" combined with the visuals is actually a p good ad. the whispy clouds around the towers and the plane flying nearby indicates that these buildings would be as tall as mountains, which would've been a wild concept to have in the heart of Manhattan at the time. good ad, bad take by Shane.
How he was, and even now after all the dispicable shit is still popular that he remains having a large fanbase will never cease to amaze and mostly disgust me 😐
If we got so desenceticed to towers exploding, how come I remember sitting in Norway crying at school because of World Trade Center? Stuff like Shanes videos make me so angry
The thing is, that in those kind of videos (about conspiracies) people will often shove as much arguments in your face as they can. So you dont have time to think about each of them individually so you just end up with the feeling that a video, with _so much arguments_ cannot possibly be wrong. Mix that with some cognitive bias and you might end up "in the rabbit hole". So its great that you took the time to demolish those argunents individually.
I love how he even used the popular spanish children's comic at 13:10 to prove his point, ah yes someone is also going to cook a giant sausage on the statue of liberty soon...

Man you shouldn’t be afraid to say exactly what you’re thinking when it comes to this stuff because it is serious - I know what you mean when you say ‘another stupid thing, and another’, but some people might not, and it’s better if you just say that yes, some of these theories reach the ‘anti-Semitic point of no return’ quite quickly There are some interesting articles out there that talk about the actual danger of conspiracy theories, particularly right wing ones, which tend to focus on the idea that there is a group of hyper-competent individuals running things behind the scenes Idk I just have seen people reach dangerous places with this kind of stuff and it definitely never sat right with me that Shane just dabbled in it like it was just an interesting little side thing rather than a huge thing that actually ruins people’s lives
when i was young i heard so many other people parrot these sorts of things and didnt think too much about it until i got a bit older then i saw all the horrible ways of thinking it can drag you down into. im so glad i never fell down that hole bc the type of rhetorics that get spread around are so dangerous
When he said predictive programming in the beginning, I was shocked that Shane was aware of surveillance capitalism and wondered why you had a problem with it. I’m far less shocked now, but more certain that TH-cam’s board of directors belong in prison for crimes against humanity.
The only thing that actually made me feel creeped out was when he said that Johnny Bravo episode came out a few months before 9/11, but like, that doesn’t mean anything. It’s only one building anyway.
Those conspiracy videos make me feel the same irrational anger as clickbait articles that use a nebulous term such as "scientist" implying literally EVERY scientists are agreeing about some new whackass thing. "Scientists Say Drinking Orange Juice Will Not Just Prevent Cancer, But utterly Destroy It in 1-on-1 Arena Combat" also I feel an irrational discomfort with how close Shane sits to the camera.
Another example would be those "Don't eat this fruit to lose weight" ads. Like you show a fruit that has a lot of things that a lot of people may need and you're demonizing it?

Some of the old folks, like me, may remember that the X-Files had a spin-off comedy series (I am completely serious, this was a real thing) following the adventures of Langly, Frohike, and Byers from the original series. In March 2001 they aired an episode that depicted very similar happenings to "the Event" and I am always pissed when no one references it in their "predictive programming" compilations (because it was a great series that deserved more attention, not because I believe in pp).
Not even going into how legitimately dangerous people putting real faith in conspiracy theories has become recently (as you rightly pointed out) --many of these conspiracy are just _boring._ The Nazis stealing the Ark of the Covenant or the Holy Grail, the Spear of Destiny being used to bring about the Apocalypse, the Necronomicon summoning Cthulhu, those are at least *fun* ideas that make for enjoyable stories. But these ones about kids cartoons and recycled pizza and Bigfoot? They're lame, pointless, and uninteresting. "Ooooo, some hairy guy in the woods, ooooo maybe they had a _naughty joke_ in one frame of a cartoon, oooooo pizza slices look funny!" And as for the 9/11 "truther" theories and reptilians ruling the world, well it's basically a precursor to all the violent QAnoners we're now dealing with and a lot of times is just a mask for other racial/ethnic/national/religious hatred.
I honestly love cryptids videos even if I know they're fake, the idea of monsters haunting places is cool :) and the bad quality pictures add a lot to it. Plus stuff like Cthulhu and the Necronomicon are not theories, it's dark fantasy narrative Edit: stupid typo

predictive programming is a real thing in psychology (like when you get a bird to hit a button to get food, itll do it loads of times) of course "predictive programming" isnt the real term, however similar, and shane is WAY off.
Oh my God, this reminds me of "psychics" that act like they're spirit mediums who can talk to your late loved ones by saying the most generic, vague things that could apply to anyone or anything. If your evidence is vague enough, of course you're going to see a connection. That doesn't mean a vague connection between two things makes them related. Buildings collapsing and exploding is just a generic trope used in action movies/shows to display the high stakes and danger of the plot. Also, isn't another part of this "predictive conditioning" or whatever saying they're putting these things in media to make us become okay with them? Because I think a vast majority of people can differentiate between fiction and reality. Just because we see a building exploding on a fictional tv show or in a movie doesn't mean we'd be fine with it happening in real life. I think most people would still be terrified of anything, especially a building, suddenly exploding or collapsing. There's no sound psychological basis for this "predictive conditioning." You put it perfectly, it's just some fear-mongering bullshit.
This makes me so upset because as a kid I definitely believed the 9/11 conspiracy theories. Having seen a big TH-camr like Shane Dawson basically echoing my already held beliefs would have just solidified that as a kid 😭
when my mom was a kid in the early 70s, she and my grandma would go into manhattan to shop all the time and my mom would look at the towers and go "mom, what would happen if they fell?" did my mom predict this event, shane? or did she have a thought about a big fixture falling over, like any other weirdo 5 year old would? also, that programming clearly didn't work bc people still lost their collective minds when it happened so i don't understand why he's trying to give this example as a "checkmate" like???? wow shane so spoooooooky, the CIA is quaking
all of his theories are rooted in antisemitism, racism, misogyny and just bullshit. it’s actually dangerous his fans believed this then and now, i’m so glad u called this out

I always found those spoooky theory videos fun to watch when I was younger, and it's still fun to think what if these theories were real, but the way Shane portrays as if it's hidden knowledge and not a crack theory always kinda weirded me out
So that's how he knew, they are true for the most part but don't go seeking for hidden knowledge, he was in the know, he's one of them like alex jones and such that's how they got to "gain access" to their secrets they didn't do investigations or research like some have
i was 14/15 when i started watching shane and let me tell you it ruined the way i view stuff, i believed almost everything he said coz as a 14 YEAR OLD what else was i supposed to do. i think his videos are the main reason i’m almost always paranoid
I remember binge watching these videos 4 or 5 years ago now. I never believed any of them as far as I remember but they were entertaining. It was strange watching him fall from 'grace' in the past few years but it was entertaining while it lasted.
Nearing a year ago I went into a crisis thinking that I was in a simulation and the world around me wasnt real. I never really understood where it came from but this video made me realise that this may have contributed to it. I'm doing much better now and fully resent the man for those videos.
Maybe like 3 or 4 years ago, when I was like 17 or 18, I binged watched all of Shane's conspiracy videos, as I found them really interesting. But what ended up happening is it absolutely destroyed my mental state for like a good year. Those video's made me so paranoid, I almost couldn't take it anymore.
This was such a fascinating video. I've never personally watched any of Shane's spoooky videos but I want to see more of Pinely debunking Shane's excuse of videos
They're not even 'his' theories and he never adds his own perspectives or research. He literally steals them from online. Yet people were so in love with his series and didn't want it to stop?? I don't get it.
Even though sometimes I watch some conspiracy theories videos, I completely agree that they can be dangerous and some are completely rooted in hateful ideas but people seem to not realize. Also I remember years ago watching Shane talk about the headless woman trope in one of his videos. Which how so many ads and movie posters have the body of a woman, generally a sexy one and they don't show her head/face and sometimes the lady is not even relevant. I thought he was going to talk about objectification or something like that, but he implied that maybe the Illuminati or whatever will cut the head off of women 🤠
Imagine youre a secret organization about to plot a bad thing. Do you: A. Keep all plans of this bad thing a secret at all costs B. Plant hints in random shows and cartoons years prior
Honestly, I'm wondering what shane thinks about the Nostradamus """prediction""" (Nostradamus' predictions are vague as hell and not really accurate) that's associated with 9/11, cause if he believes the whole predictive programming stuff its gonna be hard to explain why the US government put that into pop culture in the 1500's. Especially since the US didn't even exist back then.
this might have been in one of the deleted videos but i very distinctly remember him talking about the suspicious death of a young girl, and him discussing the theories on it. i think it came out in november 2017? basically the girl was found in a freezer at some hotel, and the police investigation was questionable, shane discussed some of the theories to try and i guess raise awareness on the case but looking back the way he did it was really sketchy and some of the theories he discussed were really disrespectful
There is a Detective Conan episode called the twin towers where an artist tries to blow up two towers who ruined his view of Mt. Fuji and I swear that would have been a better example but instead he goes for Johnny Bravo background art
What kills me is that he acts as if those towers hadnt been attacked before 11/09, like its sone crazy government hoax, also that johnny bravo poster??... Towering inferno reference?!

12:30 i think what shane meant to convey was that the buildings were so tall that planes could fly into them, like that's HOW tall they are. idk, great vid tho!
I think the one i was most mad about was when he tried to say Sandy Hook never happened. I think one reason was because the security camera footage was never released by police. If he had addressed the theory and then IMMEDIATELY proved it wrong, I might have had some respect left, but he didn't. He put the thought out there and left his audience to think 6 year olds dying was a hoax and a government conspiracy.
Thanks for covering this. In my opinion the fact that he platformed, and didn't ENTIRELY delegitimize so many spooooky conspiracy theories, is no less harmful than his casual racism, sexism, sexualization of minors... all that disgusting shit that TH-cam let him get away with in the early days before his softboy rebranding. For the reasons you stated in this one. The fact that the "reformed" Shane Dawson was giving visibility to blatant misinformation, even if he wasn't wholeheartedly agreeing with it, shouldn't be understated in his other reasons why he doesn't deserve to have a platform. More discussions on his awful conspiracy videos would be appreciated, because I feel like it doesn't get the volume of criticism it really deserves. The only reason to bring up these ideas at all is to debunk them, not to tell them as if they're a scary bedtime story and talk about how they gave you chills.
His k-pop theory in this video was so infuriating! He could have talked about actual idols being mistreated but instead took videos of BTS laughing and said they were fainting. Or choking on some smoke when they got too close to pyrotechnics and said they were throwing up from being over worked. They are so many idols ACTUALLY being mistreated and fucked over but he chose to straight up lie for clicks! Or he showed Krystal fainting on stage without adding the important information that she is anemic. He just fucking lied!!!

@@doperagu8471 Still not sure how it magically makes a theory a fact. Because it doesn’t, regardless of who believes it.
It gave me such a warped view of the world that wasn't based in reality at all, and like you said, I'm certain that if I didn't get out of that mindset I would've gone down a much darker path

The real world is running out of ideas and just imitates fiction.

So its great that you took the time to demolish those argunents individually.

predictive programming is a real thing in psychology (like when you get a bird to hit a button to get food, itll do it loads of times) of course "predictive programming" isnt the real term, however similar, and shane is WAY off.
**Sobs in I was a younger teen, fresh out of identifying as a right winger and went right into believing in conspiracies again because of Shane**

I always found those spoooky theory videos fun to watch when I was younger, and it's still fun to think what if these theories were real, but the way Shane portrays as if it's hidden knowledge and not a crack theory always kinda weirded me out
So that's how he knew, they are true for the most part but don't go seeking for hidden knowledge, he was in the know, he's one of them like alex jones and such that's how they got to "gain access" to their secrets they didn't do investigations or research like some have

Or he showed Krystal fainting on stage without adding the important information that she is anemic. He just fucking lied!!!
Hii it’s my birthday & this made me really happy to see 🥰
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Happy birthday !!
Happy birthday :)
shane dawson made me a flat earther for like a week when I was 12
I used to love Shane with all my heart when I was 14, and obsessed over his conspiracy videos and even used to spread these theories around to people at my school as if they were fact. I am now 18 and regret Everything, and I can’t believe I used to believe this manipulative bullsh^t. It really shows how absorbent and impressionable young minds truly are ,and how what the adults in this world tell them, sticks like glue. Be carful what you say to kids.
I remember when people in my high school were genuinely believing the earth was flat because of one of his videos.
I’m glad you said this. People still praise his theory videos till this day
I cannot stand that tone Dawson does in all his videos. It's very off-putting like he's trying to convince me he's a good person.
