That's strange. It looks intuitive that it would fail like that but I can't think of a proper answer why. I wonder if this is why industrial wheels are often not solid, with lots of strange cutouts and shapes
google "all electronics 600w motor" it only runs counter clockwise, seems some folks have added their own motor controller for it but for this application it seems fine.

Try printing with pla at higher temp and over extrude a bit
