  • If you’re a screen printer looking for a unique effect, this video is for you! We teamed up with DTLA Print to learn all about burn out printing, which removes any natural fibers from the garment, such as cotton, leaving behind only synthetic fibers, like polyester.

Missed a day in my textiles class. This was the video that accompanied the notes I was sent. Love learning about all this!

I thought this was going to be discoloration, like from bleach. But now I will try a bleach paste with an ink consistency.

    Is this essentially discharge printing?

No, discharge printing removes the dye from the cotton fabric and burn out printing removes the fabric itself. So you'll get a semi-sheer effect when you do burn out printing on a blended fabric.

What chemical are you using to do that?

At DTLA Print, they use a 2-part ink made by Jantex, but there are many brands that sell it - just look for "Burn Out Ink."
