DUDE! I had a 303 misfire, my CRV wouldn't idle - I replaced plugs and coils, no dice - then I saw this video - "I like to take the front cover off too because rodents build nests under there" SURE ENOUGH, a nest and chewed wires on 1 injector that must have started shorting - a little electrical tape, a dryer sheet put in there and I'm back in business baby! After struggling with taking those Honda 2.4 valve covers off, I started unbolting the power steering pump to make things easier. Then a former Acura tech told me just to unbolt the hose from the pump. Goes from a 30 minute struggle to squeeze that cover out to 30 seconds taking a bolt off.
Good job man, diag was good. Funny how you say everything is straight-forward. That's how it is when you've been doing it for long enough. If it was me doing it it'd be sideways and backwards.

Hey man. ..you being a guy with about a lifetime worth of experience of the auto industry. I gotta question or two if you don't care, I figure your the guy to ask hehe What's the best way to go as far as pay, promotions, and longevity and easier to work at , basically provide the best quality of life for the long run. ..independent shops? Dealerships? Or trying to start your own business? What's your take on all that, especially taking into consideration the direction the industry is going, same direction is been going for a loooong time, more tech, more electric, more hybrid, more different system designs more often. .. What's way would you go if you, knowing all you know now, were to start off again today. ..?
TheCoatneyadkins -most money I've made was working for dealerships, 90,000 a year for about 4 years in a Row. Rest of the years 55, 000 to 68,000 avg. yearly. Allowed me to buy my house etc... If you work for dealership you can get so good that you beat the book times easily. Same type of cars day in and day out so you get pretty good and fast. I was a tune up/drivability, smog licensed Tech here in SoCal. Sure you can have slow days especially in winter. But it averages out. Dealerships also send you to school while paying you to update on the latest technology. Warranty work doesn't pay that great but again when you do enough warranty work you can get fast With that also. So basically a new guy would benefit in my opinion from dealership experience because You can really learn a lot and get your feet wet, then in time venture out to Indy shops or even your own Business. At least that was my experience, good luck.
@@aros007z thanks for the advice, I've worked at a few different independent shops since I quit driving a truck and started turning wrenches several years ago, so I'm not "brand" new to the industry, but I have never worked at a dealer. ...I've been noticing that alot of these independent shops just simply won't pay a wrench what he's worth, wether he can wrench good and at a good pace AND diag accurately or not. And they don't care if you got all ases or none. ..or even a ged for that matter, and no drug test, some will offer to pay under the table to avoid cold support...I mean literally an unsolicited offer right out of the gate in the hiring process.....all that crap so they don't have to feel bad about not paying you a decent wage for a job that actually requires a high level of skill and knowledge to be good at. I am going to a dealership soon!
I had all the misfire codes and p0170 code changed plugs and coils cleaned throttle body and now I get codes p0180 and p2176. 🤦🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️. Now what do I do
I have the same car myself, only mine is a stick shift. I have not had this problem with my car before but this is always good to know about for sure. Muchas gracias
You make it look easy dude! I need to add 4 grommets and a valve cover gasket to my 8th gen si. I have the NGK laser plugs in my car and they work amazing. Gonna paint the valve cover and redo a lot of stuff soon.
I also look at things like ect on the freeze frame to see if it's happening when cold. Head gasket was my first thought. When the plugs get loose it will arc against the tube and also you get exhaust heat coming up from the cylinder. That's 2 things that will mess up the rubber on the coil pack and tube seal.
Alternators and starters do indeed go bad on these cars, and I have in fact had to replace both of those items on my '05 CR-V. That being said, I wouldn't doubt your suspicions on that at all if you think they may be going bad. It's super common. And no you do not need to remove the intake manifold to get to either of these components.
Pretty sure the spark plug came loose to cause the issue. Burnt up oil all over the plug from the spark plug tube seal. If a plug is left loose or came loose pressure from the combustion made it into the tube and burnt up the tube seal and allowed oil into the spark plug tube taking out the coil. Another possibility is a pcv system issue. Check the air filter for oily residue on the throttle body side of the filter if present the pcv valve could be sticking open intermittently.
17:49 The additional rubber rings (seals) are for the coils. Opposite end from where the coil connects to the spark plug, under the top connector....the rubber seal is changeable.
Sorry to tell you, you probably did not fix the oil leaking in the spark plug tubes, it is usually the bottom of the tube loosened at the head , unscrew & teflon tape and retighten. Oil in the tube will loosen the plug, causing misfires and blow by when the plug loosens. If you check what you did it in a few weeks and you will find oil on the coil pack shaft and down on the spark plug. Also if you pull the power steering brackets that hose can move out of the way and gives you room to gate the valve cover on/off without pulling the big bracket. And yes you should check the valve clearances over 120,000 miles , you’ll normally find the intakes in spec on just a little loose (usually don’t have to adjust those, unless it sounds like a sewing machine) but exhaust valves will be tight and need to adjust.
Good Video. The gaskets you pushed away, were for the coil packs. Would have double checked valve lash while it was open. Oh and the comment about the alternator, may just be my issue on my Element.
@Homie Hektor Hey, i'm having problem with my car only runs rough when warmed up. If I turn on the heat it will run rough rpm's will drop a little and go back same if I turn the wheel or do windows up or down yesterday it was really bad for a second i was sitting in a parking lot reading a text had interior lights on the car ran really rough and lights went out for a second like it wanted to stall. When I drive it runs great only happens when in park or at a light in drive. Here is a list of things I changed on the car: alternator, spark plugs, coils, battery, got the timing chain and timing done, cleaned the 02 sensors, cleaned the throttle body, new MAF sensor, new crankshaft and camshaft sensors, new valve gasket, checked all the wiring and grounds that i know of, changed the oil and filter, changed cabin and air filter, no codes are showing at all, changed PCV valve, checked for vacuum leaks. I think that's all I did. Been trying to find this problem for months no luck. If you can help would be great. Thanks (2 codes came up under ABS right now not sure if this can be my problem u140e and c2202) it's a Dodge Caliber 2009
hello there, since ur taking off the valve cover, should inspect the valves and see if their within spec. also you for got to put some hondabond on 4 corners of the valve cover gastket...that will cause oil to leak on the side... i hope this helps =-)
Plugs and coils prolly..but only experience Ive had with sporadic things on a vehicle (idle, gagues acting weird, hard starting) was related to computer going bad.
What was the MAP sensor reading at idle (operating temp). should be .9, if not might want to try a valve adjustment. Also this year is known for piston ring failure...
Had the same issue on a 2006 CR-V. Did you check the valve lash clearances? When hot, the valve clearances, especially the exhaust tighten up and could cause the misfire. I performed the valve lash clearance on all intake and exhaust lifters using feeler gauges and drove the car around to get the oil circulating. No more misfire when the engine is at operating temperature. Hope this helps.

I pull the coils out. see if there is oil seal leaking...As I get cars all the time. Where the valve cover seals leak into the plug well.. And it gives you random misfires...

I just got that code, blinks for a while then just stay on, I checked the spark plugs, air, battery, so many stuff now I need to take it to the mechanic 🧰 everything seems to work good. It blinks for a little and stays on and the car shakes like a mo fak
It’s awesome how you interpret the data especially at 3:30. I’m currently having a misfire and my long term fuel trim is -.78% and my short term fuel trim is 4.69%. Vehicle speed was 47 mph. Does that point to anything?
I would guess somebody left that plug loose and that is what attacked everything. I have defiantly seen this happen before when a plug is not tight as it should be.
That's not gonna fix it. Hit me up if it still codes out. I ran into a '08 Si with the same engine and same problem I know what's wrong with that. It had the same exact symptom. And NO adjusting the valves didn't fix it . I found something else causing it to throw a random misfire code and cyl#3 misfire and occasionally #4. But mainly cyl#3. and it would also trigger the VSM light.

It’s awesome how you interpret the data especially at 3:30. I’m currently having a misfire and my long term fuel trim is -.78% and my short term fuel trim is 4.69%. Vehicle speed was 47 mph. Does that point to anything?
Why not replace all 4 coils versus just one?
You're lucky, I wish I had kid's.
I would guess somebody left that plug loose and that is what attacked everything. I have defiantly seen this happen before when a plug is not tight as it should be.
No valve adjustment?
024nad nope...
How much for the plugs and coil?
Recommend shocks and struts cmon bro the Firestone way😂 just playing I work for them also
Does the random misfire come back?
Hey bro..are you working any where near? Let me know I'm in Ontario, my 05 Accord has similar problem, and the dealer is a rip off
Angel De la Cruz I’m in Pomona. DM me on Instagram: Homie.Hektor
Aye homie hektor what kind of snap on scan tool do you have?
insaneivan100 Snap-On Verus
Should've used the special tool to properly put the seals in correctly to make sure it sealed all the way around evenly.
Bro what kind of silicon did you use?
ghost regular gasket maker
could be a leaking head gasket usually happens when cold only
That's not gonna fix it.
Charlie Hustle it’s fixed 😎
@@HomieHektor good job home slice! Make that $$
What was the fix
The loose plug caused the damage to the coil with combustion leaking by it.
montefiveforty1 yep!
wrong... so wrong
Combustion gas ruined the gasket, then oil was able to leak in
@@chekelley6861 actually the opposite usually occurs.
Darin Porter on the video, that spark plug was loose.
Hey do you have to own you're own tools to work there?
WiredClutch Always own your own tools 🧰 🛠
Homie, need to contact you, need work on my 05 accord 4cyl, but my Instagram got suspended for I don't know what?
