I agree with you 100%. I am blessed to have one of these in my studio and I spend more time working on the desk than I did with any of the other controllers you mentioned. I had an icon qcon pro x, faderport 16 and others but in comparison, they don't compare. I also agree that the price is higher but justified. I'm definitely not knocking the other units but using this thing has put an end to my GAS. I'm back writing and being creative again instead of searching for new solutions. Of course it's not perfect but hey... Nothing in this life is! Thanks again "uncle" Dave (even though I'm likely older than you 😉)
LOL....you have no idea how old I am
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy id say 45? You look really really young
I agree with all the points you've made Dave. It seems like all these controllers get very close but there are one or two issues with each of them and when you're spending around £1000 you'd expect it to be complete with no issues. 😎
I agree. no one has designed the "perfect" solution yet.
Great stuff, in the 360 software you can select the box within the plugin mixer layer to select a track by touching that track's fader's and it does update and follow along in the 360 plugin mixer. The selection box with jump to the fader/track you touched and even banks over to the any track you select in the mixer.
Thanks for the tip!
Good video ----- nicely done ------ My UF8, UC1 and Big Six are out for delivery right now. Looking forward to using them.
Glad you like them! Have fun!
Thanks Dave, I was considering one of these but I'll stick with my Softube Console 1 along with my Faderport 16, they both work seamless with Studio One and UAD ... all together is the perfect solution for me.
Excellent! Everyone's workflow is a bit different and if you found the combo that works for you, that's all that matters!
Hi Dave! Great video. Here's a tip for you if you want to use the lower (arrow) transport in DAW mode: Press and hold the jog wheel at you should notice the transport come alive as it does in 360 mode. Not sure if it works with all DAWs, but it works fine in Logic. Thanks for the great video. Hope all is well man! _BC
Thanks for the tip!
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy My pleasure!
Thanks Uncle Dave this video was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Two things, in 360 mode when you are not seeing the whole of the EQ section without scrolling down: That's your monitor resolution, if you have a 4K monitor set it to 4K, if you have a lower resolution monitor that's the cause. The other thing you mentioned of the channel knob not scrolling the UF-8 across banks and you having to use a mouse instead? That works fine for me (using Logic) - I can use the channel knob to scroll across all channels and banks and the faders react so perhaps this is a configuration or Studio One issue for you . . . . .
Thanks for the info!
I really like this piece. Currently using a second-hand Avid Artist Mix, but I FEEL like $1300 for only 8 faders is a bit steep. Maybe I'm being unfair? Thanks for these demos!
Thanks for watching!
Hi Danny! I went from using the Avid Artist Mix to the SSL UF8 and UC1 and couldn't be happier with my purchase. It is truly the closest workflow to the analog console and the quality is second to none. I highly recommend it.
17:30 Are you aware that the UF-8 uses the Mackie Control Universal protocol for its implementation? AFAIK it is not a MIDI controller. That is likely why different DAWs have different capabilities with UF-8. So it is quite possibly a Studio One or MCU limitation in it’s implementation. That also may be why you didn’t find a way to bank plugin parameters past 8.
If you have access to Logic Pro, you might try it with UF-8. For what it’s worth, or example, Logic has a lot more ways to program the quick keys from the videos I’ve seen demonstrating Logic with UF-8.
The most effective setup if you own a lot of Universal Audio plugins would be to use both a UF-8 and a Console One. You seemed to ignore the Apollo Central mode when you reviewed that controller. Apollo Central mode covers most of the currently available UAD DSP based plugins. That even includes guitar amp sims, time based effects, etc.
Also, you may not know this, but Console One can be switched to become a standard MIDI control surface. It requires a restart to change to MIDI mode. But with some basic MIDI programming skills, it can control other manufacturers plugins, regardless of type.
No not aware, and honestly it does not matter too me. Either the product works the way I want or it doesn't. If it does not work the way I want then I wont use it.
Hello.. I believe that the transport is always three if your push and hold the Channel button in DAW mode. The bottom arrow key will light up and then give you the transport.
Thanks!
See my comment above - I have a solution for the scroll-wheel and bank buttons. You just need to update the Mackie XML file.
Not sure how you missed this but in 360 you can create and label ANY keyboard shortcut and assign it to a quick key. I have two UF-8s and the UC1 on my desk and you can program any keyboard shortcut onto a quick key across multiple banks of 10 each of quick keys. 🤗
UPDATE: I remember channel follow was added in a later update but only for certain DAWS. I use Ableton Live 11 and my DAW follows either the UC-1 or my UF-8. Just be patient and hopefully SSL will add support for Studio One.
Thanks for the info
Also, While you are correct about the Channel button not following the DAW channels but the down arrow does. And if you hold it you can quickly move through the tracks..
Thanks for the tip!

Great overview! For additional daw control - can you just assign a quick key to a keyboard command? I don't have UF8, but noticed the "Keyboard Command" section in the quick key setup. I have S1 setup for cmd+shft+B and the UF8 manual seems to allow this combo.
Regardless, thanks for sharing - these videos are super helpful for those of us that are still undecided. Cheers!
Not that i am aware of
I have updated my mackie xml file for Studio 1 to make the scroll wheel and also the bank -/+8 keys move tracks in S1. Works perfectly. Can supply xml if people want it. Also... have created some neat macro shortcut keys on uf8 to show only drum, bass, vocals, fx, lead groups on their own on uf8 and same display in S1. Much easier than scrolling up down loads of tracks.. so I can just see all drums on their own. Or bass tracks on their own etc.
Sounds interesting. If you want to share with people here, that would be very nice of you
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy I have replied with a full explanation - but for some reason the reply keeps getting auto-deleted by YT. Weird. Anyway - my reply has a full instructions on what to do.
@@discosucks604 can you supply this or make a video?
Hi, I've been watching all your videos about the UF8 (that I ordered, it's coming!). One thing I feel like it's logical to me but seems to not be to you: when you use the rotative button to move the view of the different tracks on the device but it doenst change the selected channel in the DAW, it looks logical to me: you move the view, not the selected track. What you seem to want is to move the selected track at the same time as the view. To me the behavior you observe in both DAW and 360 seems logical because of that, we can see on the device that the selected track is always the same , the light change its position relative to the view position. That made me think: I didnt look at the manual, but maybe there is a way to say "if I move the view, move the selection in sync", in which case that would do what you think. I'll take a look once I have the device here.
Although I'll use Ableton Live and my understanding is that it displays the "view" of the DAW controller in a colored rectangle, separately from the selection, so maybe that's why it's intuitive to me (that's what it was doing with my Push). Studio One doesnt seem to display that so maybe that's what makes it confusing to you too.
Also am programmer so maybe that's more intuitive for people like me who are at ease with differences between selection and "views" hahaha! I'm a noob in mixing but working on that.
Thanks for your videos!
Ok, congrats on your new UF8. Enjoy it
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy Hey Dave! Thanks again for your videos, they were very helpful. I just got a UF-1 to complete my daw controls with my UF-8. I noticed they very recently did an update of the drivers that might interest you (maybe worth a video? I don't know) where basically they improved the situation with track selection at least for some DAWs. Here is the specific section: th-cam.com/video/Jtm13V9KbDM/w-d-xo.html
Hopefully next update will improve the situation with all the DAWs and situations.
I'm using Live which I think they still need to improve the integration of on multiple cases, but at least the channel selection knob does keep everything in sync track-selection-wise.
Have a nice day!
While I do love SSL and have the majority of their plugins along with a Six, this seems like it needs more software revisions. It's really nice, but the whole point of buying a controller is to get you away from the keyboard and mouse. It seems that the Softube Console 1 and Fader integrate better with Studio One (my DAW). I'm not in a rush to get a controller, so I'll hold out for the time being. Softube's Console 1 does look nice and I do have a few of their plugins (like their tape which has special integration with Studio One), but I think SSL is in a transition period and I want to see where that leads.
Well said, thanks for watching!
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy I really enjoy your real reviews. There's really good info on this channel and your other one as well.
I wish you could have tried Radikal Technologies SAC-2K it was a beast, I still use it, no longer in production
never heard of it
In Logic Pro the jog wheel works fine.
Ok, thanks for the info!
The Xtouch costs half and makes double, screens with color to identify the track and touch sensitive, etc ...
Not a fan of Behringer products. Maybe one day I'll check it out
What do you think of the new 360 update that SSL have done ?
I have not used it yet but I have seen it. Looks like they added back the "zoom" feature which I think is great.
Re: the scrolling/paging not showing up in the software- I’ll preface this by saying that I work in IT but am not a developer, so this is an educated guess.
The auto-scrolling in the app appears to be based on making a selection. When you scroll or page through the channels, you’re not actually selecting any channels so there’s probably no message being sent to the DAW/computer. If the scrolling automatically moved the selection, that might affect the desired change. This might be the easiest thing for current controller makers to do, but the reality might be more complicated.
Scrolling commands are usually implemented as mouse input so they dependent on where the mouse pointer is (like the focus control in DAW mode). So getting the control to scroll the mixer regardless of where the mouse is located means that they have to develop something new instead of piggybacking on the mouse input. Additionally, I don’t think there’s a standard for the controller to tell the DAW how far to scroll (the controller doesn’t know your screen resolution, or how wide the faders are in your mixer window), so getting the scrolling or paging to be accurate requires some deeper coordination from the DAW itself.
Ultimately I’d love to see the level of sync you’re wanting between what’s happening on the controller and what’s happening on the screen. The reason to use a controller is to avoid using the mouse. If the screen consistently followed what you were doing on the controller, it wouldn’t be so bad to grab the mouse and make whatever adjustments aren’t suited to the controller. But if the controller isn’t good at something and then I have to waste time using the mouse to navigate the DAW before I can make the adjustment, it breaks my flow. I’d really like to see next gen developers implement an open source controller protocol/API standard that hardware and DAW makers will get behind.
Great points.
To control the 360 mixer the UC1 is the right one rather than the UF8
Good to know
It would be fine if i could change the colors of the LEDs to match the functions in my daw.
In Logic the loopfunction is yellow. In uf8 yellow is stop.
interesting request. :)
Banking/scroll isn't linked to Select, that simple. It would be BETTER if it were, I agree.
I Agree!
What do you think about pairing the UC1 with Qcon prox instead of this UF8? Thinking about that combo...
The UF8 blows the Icon out fo the water in my opinion
Thanks!
Thank you very much
15:00 This works flawlessly in Reaper
Great. thanks for watching!
Does the UC1/SSL 360 work w/Reaper? I downloaded ssl360 and it doesn't show REAPER under configuration
15:00 I tried alot of controllers and send them all back.
This is a Mackie Control Script problem (as far as i know). This script is ancient. It only works in Banks of 8.
I wish they just updated the script or do it like Softube.
The same problem with Presonus faderport. Works great in Studio One, but not so much in Ableton, Cubase, Logic etc. because you have to use the mackie control script.
I have yet try find the "perfect" solution. I dont think it exists yet!
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy Same here. The only one that comes close imo is the Softube Console 1 and Fader
The channels in Pro tools follow the jog weel. Regards.
Great if you are a PT user!
Behringer X-Touch 550$ (used about 400$)
Neve used it. but in general,I have never been a fan of Behringer but I'll check it out
Like clockwork
Thanks for watching!
Hi Dave follow track also does not work in Cubase.
Ssl they are lazy.
LOL
SSL still dining out on their high end reputation from decades past. I don't get this controller though, it's not like it's got the 'SSL sound' or whatever marketing they used to use when they had a monopoly on the high end mixing console market. Way too expensive for an 8 fader controller.
There are many other controllers on the market at all pice points.
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy I know. I’ve got the X-touch.
I really hope SSL fix that scrolling in 360, major workflow killer
I agree!
