    Hi Adam. 30 years ago I had a little boat with a Brit Minor petrol engine with a Lucas SR Magneto. The cap was a bit iffy but years before the internet I couldn't find another and fixed is with epoxy putty. I bought a new HT lead, hot tip plugs and a couple of plug caps. These were made by NGK and had screw on connector for the plug top. Bartram Mowers in Ipswich still have them. have used them on older motor bikes as well. Many ears ago I had a WICO or WIPAC magnets on a big single JAP on my Howard Gem Rotovator. The Mag packed up and I couldn't fix it. An old boy in Colchester worked on mags and he said even if you find continuity in the coil there may still be a breakdown and tested his with a big 6v battery and a old car headlamp bulb says if it flickered there is a break in it. I'm glad the spark on yours looks really healthy. I have learnt a lot from your post.

      Ow i do like old fix it tails like this. Yeah I know the plug caps yoy mean? Quote often they a marroon on colour I belive? Yes the internet has made getting many things so much easier these days. Thanks for watching 😁

    I was thinking that you only needed to change drives, that the mag didn't care about direction, but I could be wrong. Good video, wishing you many beer tokens

    The HT side of the coil will be of such high resitance that a meter like the one you have will not measre it, it will be in the region of ten's to hundreds of megohms and you will need a megger in order to measure the resistance. DVM's put out to low a voltage a megger will use a voltage of two hundred to a thousand volts to make the measurements. The first thing to look at is the capacitor/condessor as they are the main failure element, they can go short or open, you need to remove the condenssors connection to the points and measure ists cappacience and measure it for short or open circuit as well. As that mag has obviously been in the wet it is also worth drying out the coils as it could have absorbed water a few hours in the oven at arround 80 to a hundred deg C or several days on top of the hot water tank will do the trick. The plug cap screws onto the plug by turnning the knob you need to remove the aluminium top from the plug to reveal the screw thread, also the non brocken top to the magneto the HT lead connects by screwing straight onto the thread that is iinside the shroud.

    Iv converted mags to either direction without to I much trouble , but well done for spark , only a tiny sliver of metal in the amature case would prevent a spark !

      Yes I don't know why it suddenly started working. Like you say could have been a tiny bit of crap holding it back. Either way I'm happy with it. 😀

    Cool little mag and what a good spark too, I was thinking maybe you could change the rotation of this mag, I know you can do it on lucas sr1 type mags not sure about wico mags It might be possible on all mags who knows lol 👍

    I maybe wrong regarding WICO mags, but I'm pretty sure you can take the impulse clutch and catch plate from one, and swap it for the other, to change the rotation. If you notice, there's electrical connections on both sides of the body, and probably an oiler on both sides, so that the body can definitely work either way round.
    Of course, there's WICO, WIPAC, and TRICO mags, so I could be thinking of any of them, but I'm fairly sure that WICO can be reversed.

      No i think you can change them over mate. Am going to double check tomorrow that it's wrong. If it is I will try and swap them over. I do like these old mags. Always find them very good.

    Ground to HT terminal tag 5000ohms approx, primary winding or wire to the points (disconected from points) to ground should show nearly a short circuit (0 ohms)

      Sometimes they will still spark with open circuit secondary just depends how bad it is and how big the break in the winding is, although eventually the break burns away far enough to stop all sparking.

      Also sparking using impulse doesn't mean it will work when the impulse disengages at around 200 rpm, you got to have a spark that will jump 5mm under all conditions to ensure reliable running under compression.

      Yeah I will do that tmw. But first I'm going to double check it on the engine I'm putting it on. It may be right for that engine.
