Beautiful, well-supported middle register, and seemingly free of tension. While this was the norm 60 years ago, nowadays it's an absolute rarity, so we should cherish performances like this. She sounds great singing Puccini.
I HIGHLY recommend viewers of this clip to watch her rendition on MetOpera On Demand (there is a 7-Day free trial - I am NOT a referral) Although Sonya sounds very good in this clip, it doesn't compare to her performance at the Met 2 years ago. I have noticed that the 2 versions do not line up in length, her live performance is 12 seconds longer - counting "singing time." I just saw Sonya two nights ago in Sofia, singing many arias I have heard her sing in operas. It seems that the orchestra was not as well synced with how long she can hold the notes or perhaps she was holding back a bit. I will also say, and understandably so, that it must be much harder to "get into character" for just a single aria at a concert. With all that being said, and disclosing I am a "newbie" to live operas, in the 40 performances I have seen at the Met in the past 2 years - no other soprano I have seen has her angelic voice and effortless power.

unclealand I don't think it's on her schedule, and it's a very heavy role so I'm not sure it ever will be. However, I believe that she has Delilah and Eboli on her schedule.
Makes one miss Freni-a soprano with the personality, phrasing nuance, vocal opulence and shimmering pianissimi needed for this aria and role. Yoncheva sounds like she’s pushing the limits of her voice-all one volume and color.
The voice is beautiful, but nothing outstanding. I mean, her voice is not distinct at all...I've also seen her live and I thought she was ok, but a bit boring....without any trademarks. I can notice some artificial darkening at the bottom, some phrasing issues and she does not have any pianissimos, which is again....not so bad but I don't think it's that exciting either. Otherwise, she's good enough...

She sometimes hits sour notes and wobbles , somewhat like a Callas impersonation. But she sounds pretty good here and she's a decent actress.
Yoncheva has excellent diction and besides that speaks fluently Italian. Therefore her Italian is not sloppy at all.
That's globalism in Opera. Singers are good, but not extraordinary, the time of the great Divas has gone.
