One of my favorite Mimi's. I love her because she sounds like no one else. I believe that we love the greats because we love their imperfections. Yet, now we expect perfection. The occasional bark, the dark quality gives her character... I love it!!
Your beautiful comment really touched me. You have a lovely shared memory that will always be with you. If I had had a daughter I would have hoped she too loved Mimi. La Boheme was my first opera 🎶🥰 and still my favorite.
First it was my Mom's love of Luciano that led me to hear 'Nessum Dorma" and begin to listen to opera. After buying a CD of 'great aria's" I heard this aria, cried like a baby at it's beauty and fell deeply in love with opera-Brava Angela,Bravo Luciano!
That's how you sing this aria!!!! I have never heard a voice I prefer more as Mimi and I have listened to them all! The way she stays up there on the climax is just stunning.
@@DavidoffGustav Of course, can't ever fault Mirella but there's just something in the way she sings that climax here that just gives me instant goosebumps
She has a nice voice, but have you listened to Elisabeth Schwarzkopf in this particular aria? The ethereal nature of the voice and orchestra gave me goosebumps throughout. Here is the link if anyone is interested: th-cam.com/video/ZvTVsHH0c4M/w-d-xo.html
Agree with others who say Freni - but this is what we always pray for on every soprano. Is she going to stay there long enough or just hit it a couple beats and slide off it. Angela one ups that - not only does she stay there sparkling she pulls off a wonderful decrescendo that speaks to the hopelessness that is Mimi.
I love this opera but mostly I like this stage setting, finally how it should be and not an empty stage with people in their jeans etc. running around!
I agree, but unfortunately there are more and more absolutely rubbish productions like you describe. as if producers couldn't be bothered any more with a proper stage setting or is it that they are not properly trained in opera staging ??
WOW!! Awesome as Mimi! Beautiful voice and gesticulations. I would have loved to see her as Mimi w Pav. I really enjoyed D'Amico w Pav. Gorgeous music together...and the composition/orchestration of Le Boheme is beyond wonderful, esp here.
No doubt this singing is superb but, just spare a moment and listern againn paying particular attention to that wonderful orchestra. She sings and the orchestra accompanies and answers her. That skill didn't just happen there's lierally hundreds of years of hard work and when yhey come together its beautiful...thanks poster.
Just reminds me of 'good old times'... With that friend named Roger, who was and is an absolute expert in operas... Night-long conversations about the real confessions and possessions of love... (Time goes by, and so do I)
I remember hearing a version of this performed on the Harry Secombe show. It was a Christmas broadcast with the acting cast from Oliver! (1968). Mr. Secombe sang it with a special guest named Mella Rose (Bella Rose?) I couldn't get anything on that lady though. Still, her performance and the lady here is both superb.
Anghela will remain the best performer of this aria among all including Callas and Caballe. And her Mio babbino care is the best rendition out of all greatest performers
You know, in the book "Scenes de la Vie Boheme" by Henric Murger (sorry if I misspelled it), the first meeting between Rodolfo and Mimi is not mentioned at all and the way they meet each other in the opera is taken from another chapter that doesn't have to do with the two of them. And to be fair, in the book poor Rodolfo is crazy for Mimi but she keeps straying and also she's overly coquettish and dressy...but of course Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa had to adapt it so it could look like a beautiful love story. The way they've integrated elements from any chapter of the book, even if it is not about Rodolfo and Mimi, in the opera's plot is, I have to admit, extremely clever and it really shows that they've worked very hard and examined the book thoroughly....

I like her but she is playing a Mimi that is too seductive and I don't think that really goes with the character. A woman who wonders at the sunrise and the flowers is a bit childlike, innocent and naive.
Yes, my thoughts too. " But after the thaw, the first sun of April is MINE" - Mimi is a wonderfully innocent young woman as written in the opera. You might try Nicole Car at the Royal Opera House. th-cam.com/video/bfozlHuZD3c/w-d-xo.html Or of course the ultimate modest Mimi, Mirella Freni.
Don’t get me wrong, this is still a really nice performance and her voice is beautiful... but her performance is not that of a Mimi... I’m sorry. It just isn’t
Beverly Sills might have liked it. She used to say, "people play Mimi like a mouse, but she sleeps with a man the first night she meets him. That shy she's not."
I agree. Opera is NOT musical theatre it’s refined emotion unless of course you are a character actor and meant to act a certain way like a grisette or in this case Musetta who would very much act this way because she’s a performer. Mimi is a seamstress. Quiet, reserved, to her self, incredibly inward, quiet and gentle. I sing these arias and I’m not some famous opera singer and even little old me figured out Mimi. It might not be her fault. She’s probably following directors telling her to think things that aren’t in the text. Tebaldi is Mimi. 😍
I thought I was the only one that didn't like this interpretation. I apologize if this sounds offensive. Some of her vowels are very unclear. Her low "chest" voice doesn't sound real. It actually sounds forced. Yes, Ms. Mirella Freni is one of my favorite interpretations, and Renata Tebaldi.
No substance in this voice. It's empty, it's all air (fiati). Voice must be full, rich of armonics, strong, stable, solid. Complete. This is wobbling, unbodied, unsure and unpleasant to listen to. This is to an educate ear of course.
2:44 - 3:30 this is the reason you go see this live. Literally the most beautiful 50 seconds ever composed.
Absolutely true. And my whole body is covered in chills when this aria is sung. Un bel di vedremo is another reason to attend a live performance.
You’re goddamn right!
I don't know about that but it is magnificent a wonderful expression of freedom
