  • I have always loved this piece bu Heitor Villa-Lobos. It might be my favorite guitar piece originally composed for the guitar. Leyenda is my favorite piece but it wasn't originally composed for the guitar.
I remember when I first heard this song. I had just started studying classical guitar and I heard a recording of Christopher Parkening playing it and I thought...I have to learn this!! The next time I saw my guitar teacher I asked him if I could learn it and we had a lesson on it. I was so excited to learn it that I went back to my dorm and started learning it. Actually, I started working on it in the lobby of my dorm room because my roommate was still asleep.
I love the 5 preludes by Villa-Lobos. I have played all of them at one time or another. In fact, I used to perform the 5 preludes together in concerts. The first, second, and fourth are my personal favorites. A long time ago I participated in a masterclass with Christopher Parkening and I played the fourth prelude for him.
My personal favorite version of the piece would be Christopher Parkening's version. It might be because that was the version I heard first. I also really enjoy the versions by Julian Bream and Andres Segovia.

OMG! I took classical guitar lessons when I was a teen for the sole purpose of learning THIS piece. It took 3 years of lessons (Thanks Mom), and 6 months with the sheet music and my teacher’s help and I learned it! Then, life got in the way, I haven’t played it in many years. My muscle memory on the piece is pretty much gone. THANK YOU for this lesson! I’m now retired and on my list of “to do’s” is to play my guitar again. My Lyle acoustic was given to me in 1968 and it’s still in great shape. ✌️💜

Thanks for this lesson, it helped clear up a couple of technical issues I had. I learned this piece a couple of weeks ago - I probably listened to it 1000 times when I was a kid, always loved it, so it's perhaps no surprise I learned it super fast. I just played it through about 3 times, and had it pretty much memorised!
There's a couple of bars that you might want to look at: bars 43 and 47. In my transcription, after playing the harmonics at fret 12, the left hand doesn't move, instead, the high E string is played open, with the G and B strings fretted at 12, followed by the B and E strings open, and just the G fretted at 12. These are the same notes as playing the Em chord at the 7th fret, but maybe more fluid. In addition, I remember that the recording I used to listen to (no idea whose it was now) had all those notes fretted at the 12th actually played as harmonics......so after playing the top 3 strings as harmonics, the G and B are played as harmonics, then the G, with the other strings of the chord as open strings. I think this is a nice effect, of course, it might be good to play them as fretted notes first time through, and as harmonics on the repeat.
