My best friend is a furry but I am not. I went with them to a convention so they wouldn't be there alone and we both had a really great time. I walked out with an adorable plush sheep and a really neat wolf mug which is my favorite mug even still. Furries are good people.
the more that people actually go to cons and see that we're not what they think we are, the closer we get to peaceful co-existence. i'm all for that, ignorance needs to be eradicated wherever it is found.
It's kinda funny, my negative impression of furries in high school came from hearing about real events that did happen (e.g. Internet Historian's documentary of Rainfurrest), yet real events that did happen can paint literally any group as bad if you act as if a few individuals represent the entire group. Men, women, white, black, neurotypical, neurodivergent, and any other group you can think of, every single group contains bad people - and this means nothing. I'm still never gonna forget hearing about the person who put his bodily fluids on the wall of an elevator though.
@@sparky6757 indeed, getting freaky on an elevator is by no means an uncommon occurrence, by getting freaky by yourself is opening an entirely different can of worms. but yes, a few bad eggs should never be the basis for how you look at a certain group of individuals. nor can you really be judging the fandoms themselves when every fandom has some degree of sexualized content, humans in general are very sexual creatures.
Strange Æons might be one of my favourite TH-camrs ever, and seeing her in other people's video and seeing them meet the controlled chaos that she brings to anything is truly refreshing.
I consider myself a normie with an outsider-looking-in casual interest in the furry fandom. I have been curious about attending a furry convention as I have never been to one before, and there will be one soon, not far from where I live. However, bad apples within the fandom that make it look bad, bomb threats being called into conventions, and hecklers/harassers outside the conventions make me hesitant about going. How do you deal with this? How do you stay safe at these? What tips would you give someone who has never been to a furry convention? What advice would you give them about how to stay safe, have fun, enjoy themselves, and potentially meet new people?
In terms of having fun at your first convention, which can probably apply to any convention regardless of the theme, I’d recommend looking through the itinerary/schedule and checking out what seems interesting to you! Like if you like dance performances, check out the dance competition or floor wars [a 1 on 1 dance battle thing]. If you want to do board games or video games, check if there’s a room for them!
@@ragellejean Thank you! I will look into that and see if there is a schedule. Have you ever dealt with the more negative aspects of furry conventions? Like, calls for violence or bomb threats, hecklers, or other furries that give the fandom a bad name, especially to the general public. If so, how do you deal with it, or how does the fandom, at large, deal with it?
@@deevan1415 Yeah no problem! And yes, the most recent convention I went to did get swatted [received a false threat]. Personally, I wasn't there during the initial evacuation, so I didn't experience much of a "fright" so to speak. Though, I just went with the flow of things and waited for the incident to be resolved. Since it was a false threat, the convention staff asked others to not make a massive deal of it as it would only give the perpetrator what they wanted - a reaction. So, if there's any advice I could give, it's to try staying calm and avoid escalating encounters with hecklers. Though if you need to, asking for help from convention staff wouldn't hurt!
I know I'm very late to this, but do remember that you hear the horror stories about harasses/threats/bad apples because they are shocking events that stick in the mind. They are also less than 1% of what happens at conventions, and tons of people go to conventions every year and encounter none of this. If you're going solo, having an itinerary, being ready to dodge a conversation that's making you uncomfortable by saying you have to go to the bathroom or meet up with a friend, and letting someone know you're going to an event solo and when you expect to be back is all the safety advice you need. I personally have never had anything worse than someone being a little offputting in conversation happen to me at a convention, furry or otherwise. As for meeting new people; larger group events in the board game room can be great, such as werewolf of cards against humanity, or there are meetup type panels for different hobbies or types of furs that will mostly be about meeting people, those are great for getting to know people very naturally, if you have a bit more social confidence people are generally looking for socialization at conventions and it is acceptable to walk up to someone, say you like their suit, and start striking up a conversation. There is also usually a newbies panel towards the start of the con that can be good to go to
As a little weird tumblr lesbian, I love Strange Aeons - she is the reason I went to the furby prom panel in fwa 2022 and it was the best single panel i've ever been to at a convention so. that's recommendation enough.

I'm serious on this, I think Beta could do a Talk Show like panel at conventions. He queues up a bunch of vids screened by one of his Mods ahead of time and brings up a friend or two and cover the vids and any other furry related stuff going on in recent times. Basically The Tonight Show with BetaEtaDelota is more I'm thinking of rather than something like Ridiculousness or whatever that show was that Rob from Rob and Big used to do. Cover furry content in general, reactions to stuff, news stories if there are any, and I imagine getting good feels and laughs would come naturally like his streams.

I bet in a few years she'll become one though... maybe. Because we're awesome.... and because we're a part of every fandom. Star Wars? Looking at you Wookies! Star Trek? Tribbles. Anime... ooooh man... the amount of animal hybrids is huge. We flourish in the Disney fandom. Video games? If they're non-anime based... and not from Japan..... still YES! Even before super heroes became popular there were a lot of animal based ones! What about strictly church/catholic/christian based conventions? Veggietales... even the ones focused for kids... Easter Bunny and Santa's Reindeer... Rudolph had his own Christmas special and he talked. Furries are everywhere.
I just bought a pair of ears and a tail yesterday thinking like "Awe man but you'll never get a fursuit lol thats to much" and now i hear you say that stuff in this video about "getting a tail" and i'm just sitting here like "..........fuck."
After seeing so many negatives, this was a good change. I'm not a furry, but it doesn't mean I don't think this is a great outlet for people to explore elements of themselves and get to meet people doing the same and getting to do it in a social way. Nice.
