Merci à vous pour votre gentil message.😊 So glad you enjoyed the story it’s incredible how those simple dinners made such a big difference during tough times. ❤❤❤
My mom and dad lived through the depression. I hear from my older brothers and sisters that they maybe had it a little better than some. They lived on a farm so they usually had eggs meat milk vegetables from a garden etc I wasn't born til 61 but my mom still made alot of 'milk potatoes'(potato soup) and rice cooked and we ate it as main dish for supper. I don't think we felt like we're doing without; well by then 1960s things were alot better. I still remember eating alot of fried bologna and mashed potatoes and the potato soup. I remember my dad saying that when he was younger when he worked on construction jobs, he'd go to a local restaurant for lunch and have a piece of bread with gravy and coffee for 25cents..My mom said that when she was a little girl in the early 1920s she and her sister and brother felt like they were rich when they got an orange for Christmas. Btw I liked the video. Thx for posting
What a beautiful and heartfelt story! It’s amazing how resourcefulness and family traditions carried people through tough times. Your memories of milk potatoes, fried bologna, and the simple joys like an orange at Christmas really paint a picture of resilience. Thanks so much for sharing it’s these kinds of personal stories that make the past feel so real. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
I had a couple of favorite foods that my grandmother used to make. The potato pancakes, potato soup, onion soup, the Johnny cakes, so many of them I've had. And for dessert, my favorite was the rice pudding. My grandmother used to add cinnamon and raisins to it and served it warm. It was so good and comforting. I didn't think there was so many good dishes I've had, but I guess back then you just had to use whatever you had available. Great video.
Thank you for sharing those beautiful memories. Your grandmother’s cooking sounds amazing especially that warm rice pudding with cinnamon and raisins! It’s true, back then, simple ingredients often made the best comfort foods. So glad you enjoyed the video.
Very nice video. It's good information that people can use for cheap food ideas for their families. Even a couple of meals a week from this list can help people's food budget.
Thank you so much. I’m glad you found it helpful. Even adding a few of these meals can make a difference simple, budget-friendly meals really go a long way.
My mom never made sheperd's pie but instead she would mash potatoes, sautee onions, and put it all into a homemade crust. There was always extra butter (we had cows) and that pie was so loved. I still make it and it brings back happy memories. We also had Johnnycake quite often. In fact, many of us preferred them to pancakes. I was born in the aftermath of the depression but mom and dad barely made ends meet so mom just continued her "depression time" cooking.
That sounds like a delicious and comforting tradition! Your mom’s homemade crust with mashed potatoes and onions sounds like a real treat, and it’s beautiful that you’ve kept that recipe alive. Johnnycakes are such a great, simple meal too amazing how some dishes carry on as favorites even as times change. It’s inspiring how your mom kept those depression-era cooking habits, and it's clear they brought a lot of warmth and love to your family. Thanks for sharing those wonderful memories.
A good meatloaf is hard to beat. As for leftover meatloaf, what leftover meatloaf? If by some slim chance there was any leftovers, we absolutely loved meatloaf sandwiches.
its a bit sad that , with how things are going, the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, many people dont know how to afford groceries these days. This will help a lot of people in the future, while billionaires eat caviar with champagne.
You’re absolutely right it’s tough out there for so many people. Meals like these are a great reminder of how resourcefulness and simplicity can make a big difference in tough times. Hopefully, sharing these ideas helps people find ways to stretch their budgets. Thanks for your thoughtful comment.
That sounds really challenging. I hope you're able to find meals that help balance your hunger and nutritional needs. Have you talked to a dietitian? They might have some helpful tips to make things easier for you. Sending you good vibes! 😊
