My mom used to make baked stuffed apples they were a treat she put in butter, brown sugar cinnamon and a marshmellow. That was in the 1960s.

Hot water corn bread was cooked often. There was no butter, but bacon grease. There was always a can on the stove. Sugar was what rich people had. We had a bee hive and used honey. I could go on and on.

I remember seeing a recipe for burnt toast coffee in my Nan's Aunt Daisy recipe book from WW2 era. I'm not sure I could have burnt that toast and scraped all those charred crumbs up(funny enough it does have a Faint coffee smell) then drunk the resulting brew! My goodness I got a true appreciation early for the hardships endured in hard times❤❤❤
My grandmother did this all the time...1/4 c extra strong coffee or espresso with 1/2 slice burnt toast...heavy on the butter or peanut butter( 1 Tablespoon) as a mid-morning snack every day.
I still remember her sipping hot black coffee from the saucer. Now I do this too.

I remember almost all these growing up in the 50's and 60's. Simple but my mom offered them up as special treat.

We used to eat peanut butter and Mayo with lettuce sandwichs. Yum yum still do today.
I used to eat potato chip sandwich spread mayo generously across wonder bread. Pile the potato chips on to one of the slices as high as you can then top it with the other slice and mash down until all the potato chip are crushed. Wash it down with a Pepsi , it’s some good🥪😃🥪

The Depression Era Meatloaf is still how I make today lol. That’s how my mom always made it with ketchup on top 😊
Use a mixture of ketchup, mustard & brown sugar......15 minutes before meatloaf is done

Yes, when we had ground beef, my Mom did the same meatloaf. I discovered by accident another way to make a tasty topping...a can of tomato sauce, brown sugar & apple cider vinegar, heated on the stove till the brown sugar melts. When the meat loaf is almost done, I pour this on the top. Tastes really delicious.

My dad always likes gravy bread, It's a real good starter for your kids when they're getting off of baby food. Next to an egg and a slice of bread.
My father used to cook up rice / raisen pudding. He lived thru the depression. I didn't like it. I do still make deviled eggs n johnny cakes. I'm sure I am the only person who has drank chickery coffee. It's not bad. I still put my soaps together. It's come in handy.

Cornmeal mush is almost like the Italian polenta. My family made many of these recipes all the way through the 1950s and 60s.

The potato dumpling is very similar in recipe to the Polish pierogi. Always made during World War II and thereafter.

My family goes through 3 dozen at a family event.
I love smashing deviled eggs and putting it on a tomato sandwich.
So is milk gravy.
Whenever I went to a party or gathering, I brought deviled eggs. I always added a little dash of onion powder to the mix. I have yet to meet someone who doesn't love them.If you have chickens there are times when you have a lot of eggs on hand - deviled eggs are the answer.
Peanut butter and mayo sandwich is one of my favorite late night snacks. The unctuous peanut butter is complemented by the tart mayo. Sometimes I will add a slice of cheese for extra protein.
That slice of cheese sure does compliment the sandwich! Love it.
@@donnabarton6419I use Dukes Mayo. That’s the only one that has the old fashioned tartness. The other mayos are just blah.
I also like to add some dill pickles.

My dad would eat bread soaked in milk. He grew up in the depression era. Never forgot and was a dyi man because of it. “Make do or do without”.
My grandmother used to make meatloaf that was similar to this only except she had old bread as the breadcrumbs and just put it in a circular dish of any kind she had and bake it that way with just the meat,onions, egg, bread,salt and pepper.

Ok... my fiance, his grandmother did this, peanut butter and mayo.. he ate that when he was little, bread and gravy, my grandpa loves that, and me too.. when my grandma had left over gravy, he would make 2 slices of bread and pour gravy all over it. I, too, love this..
But, im from up north, Pennsylvania, I know, we have good depressed food up north.. not just Southern😮❤ depressed...
I adore mush, but I would starve to death before eating soybeans or lima beans, lol. Most of the others I grew up eating, so you know I am old, lol.
I'd eat the lima beans, but not as a loaf...lol We ate a lot of lima beans because my grandmother raised them in their huge garden. I love mush too...we also ate grits the same way. I'm almost 76, so I remember most of these, plus a lot more...lol Tomato gravy is very tasty...my grandmother would fry tomatoes, green & red ones & to stretch it, she made the tomato gravy & put the fried tomatoes in it...we ate it over toast. Pretty much a free meal. I don't remember seeing a bottle of oil in our house or my grandmother's until after I married & left home. They used bacon grease & lard.
My grandmother called it a sugar pie instead of a water pie. She also sometimes used molasses or Karo syrup if sugar wasn't available, but I'm sure she add to add more thickener.

Around 1960 to 68 I had a girlfriend that that was her go to sandwich peanut butter and mayonnaise. It’s definitely different.

When I was growing up, a lot of the time for breakfast, we had something called Milk Toast...all it was was reconstituted milk, heated on the stove with a small bit of sugar in it & a touch of cinnamon. We toasted the bread & then placed it in our bowls & the milk mixture was poured over top of it. It was simple, easy & dirt cheap. We were poor growing up we did eat a lot of the things that are included in this video, plus an array of a lot more cheap meals. The worst one was beef brains & scrambled eggs...still almost makes me nauseated remembering it...I just went hungry on those nights. I guess it was a cheap alternative to meat...but, I just couldn't get it down!!

Grandmother would send Momma and her 4 brothers out into the fields to find whatever they could to make soup. Mother told me Grandmother would cook dandelions in fat. Which actually has Vitamin C.
I reccoment small families or ppl that live alone buy small oven they use only half energy.

Since I'm old anyway, I just use dry milk now...a lot cheaper in the long run. I don't drink milk, per say...just use it in cooking & baking.
