    David Prowse's performance as Vader in this movie is really overlooked by a lot of people. He manages to convey so much of Vader's internal struggle without anyone ever seeing his face. It's all through his body language.

    For Han's change in attitude, I'd argue that spending a year in carbonite really messed with him and could be the catalyst for his change.

    There is a huge reason why Han acts so differently in RotJ and part of that is explained in the novelization, where we get to hear his inner thoughts. Basically his experience being frozen in carbonite is the closest that he's ever come to knowing true death, and when he does reawaken he discovers that Leia, Luke, the droids, Chewie, even Lando, have come to rescue him from that eternal darkness. He basically has an epiphany about the fact that he has true friends that will risk their lives to save him and that turns him into a grateful and selfless person.
    As a kid when I first watched RotJ, I never understood why he was so insistent on Lando taking the Falcon for the attack on the Death Star, given how much he loves the ship and wouldn't want to risk it, but as an adult it finally dawned on me that he insists Lando take it because it's a powerful ship, and it will keep Lando a lot safer than flying an X-Wing or other snub fighter (of which many rebels we see getting shot down throughout the battle so it was a wise choice). Han values Lando's life over his property.
    Leia is shocked when Han volunteers to lead the Endor raid, but the novel points out that she realizes Han is now committed to the rebel cause, he believes in the fight for freedom and has aligned his values with those of his friends.
    Finally, when he thinks that Leia has chosen Luke over him to be with, he's angry and upset at first, but the novelization makes it clear that he has learned to stop caring about his own selfish needs and the only thing he wants is for Leia to be happy, hence why he tells her in the movie that if it's Luke she wants he won't stand in the way.
    So if Han seems very light-hearted in RotJ, I think part of that is because he knows he's living his second life. By all rights, he should be dead and you can ask anyone who survives a near-death experience that every day after that close call, is a joy and a much deeper appreciation for living in the moment. He could die on the Endor raid, but even if he did, he's already be granted more time on this Earth (errr, universe) than he feels he should get.

      Good take, and you're so right about near-death experiences. I was very ill in 2018-19 due to an infection I got from a minor surgery. It infected all my organs, and it was doubtful I would live. I fought every day, and here I am 5 years later, still alive. My outlook on life has changed so much, I'm more tolerant and open-minded than I've ever been and see every day as another great day I get to live. There's a lot going on in the world these days and it's easy to be overwhelmed, but trust me, every day you wake up is a gift, and we live on a beautiful planet.

    I noticed the personality change of Han Solo, but it didn't phase me. He treated Lando nicer than the previous movie too. Last he remembered that guy left him be frozen. Anyway, the first thing Leia said was that Han had Hibernation sickness. I'm sure eyesight alone was just a symptom, the guy was asleep for waaaaay long. Most people after near-death experiences have a different or altered look on life. Han obviously felt more positive than before.

    A main problem I have with disney trilogy is to much comedy. As Ian mcdermid has said the end of return of the jedi could not be more serious. And the ewoks are silly but it's played seriously. The opening of the last jedi,super serious situation. Played for laughs

    1:49 - For me this was maybe the worst sound effect in the Trilogy - It doesn't sound at all like a piece of wood being broken... It does sounds like a jammed Blaster, as it should have & a secondary camera-shot of the blaster would've add that easily.

    24:25 - doesn't this just illustrate how well made the original trilogy was that, even as a young child, I/we recognised how Vader was betrayed, why he was betrayed and the consequences that would face Luke thereafter???
    This is but one of the reasons that the prequels failed, at least as standalone projects? Of course we are looking deeper into them, but critically as individual movie goers, they don't live up to what was established originally.

    The change to the celebration music at the end bothers me. The original is jubilant, uplifting, triumphant. The replacement is just sort of placid and tranquil, I find it nowhere near as effective. Moreover it's not just then end of the movie, it's the end of the entire trilogy, of all the things to be altered this is something that I think should have been left alone because of its emotional resonance.

  • @fusionspace175
    @fusionspace175 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    As a kid, it was very simple. I thought Han was acting differently the entire movie because he was recovering from carbonite sickness. I'm actually old enough to remember when I had two Star Wars movies on tape, but the third one wasn't out on VHS yet, and the biggest deal for me when I saw empire (and could form coherent thoughts about it) was that 1. I did not know the good guys ever lost in the end, and in fact I did not know that it was allowed, and 2. WTF OMG WHAR HAN???!? My 6 year old mind was blown by a main character being yanked out of the story like that. Heading into the climax of Empire I was pretty sure Luke would win or draw, at the very least survive, but I was certain that everyone would be rescued.
    So when Boba makes it away with Han, that was honestly more shocking to me than the father reveal was. That was like another hand getting cut off, in terms of innocence lost. So when I go into Jedi, I'm thinking about one thing, saving Han, who has undergone a radical and untested freezing process and is already suffering blindness when he awakens, so even beyond the rescue I'm thinking about his medical condition. I had only seen Harrison that weak and helpless one other time, and that was in Temple of Doom, so I really can't overstate how huge Han was in my mind. I was glad he was alive, glad he could see and shoot again, and ready to forgive any changes he may have undergone from the experience.

    I agree with you on many of the film's flaws; the palace escape bothers me less, because I try not to let plot interfere with enjoying interesting characters in interesting situations; it's goofy fun, but not a deal breaker for me. I actually like the Ewoks, but hate their battle with the Empire. As far as score, I honestly think the Ewok tracks are bangers, and am bored by the melodramatic throneroom fight music. Slow, moody chorus music is my least favorite of the types throughout the franchise. My two cents.

    About the narrator's opinion about Han being "optimistic" and "plucky"...I noticed it too, right off the jump when I saw it as an 11-year-old in the theatres. My theory was that his demeanor changed after being frozen in the carbonite. In the novelization, he describes it to Luke as "being near dead." On a side-note, I was hit by a car a few years after this movies came out and was comatose. When waking up from my coma, I too, came close to death, and was never the same after that. I appreciated things a little more, so in a sense, I can relate to Solo. The creators may or may have not considered this, but that is what I believe to this day...and why he remains as one of my favorites characters...

    The strength of Return of the Jedi is the plot points of Luke meeting the Emperor and fighting Vader as well as the space battle between the rebel fleet and imperial fleet near the Death Star.
    The crosscutting between the duel in the death star and ship to ship combat outside the death star works rather well in terms of the film's flow.

    Well, for once I disagree with you about Han. Personally, I think his experience in the Carbonite plus the fact that he's actually in love with Leia has changed him, and Han's always been a bit of a goofball in a good way, especially with the Falcon breaking down, banging the bulkhead to make the power come on and the classic line "it's not my fault" when the Hyperdrive fails for the umpteenth time. The explanation of the Ewoks was very interesting and it struck me is that if there were subtitles for the Ewoks it would've made them more complex and interesting, and also explained why they have so many traps set up in the forest to fight the Empire.

    • @RepresentThis
      @RepresentThis  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Many folks have disagreed with me about Han and the book states his Carbonite experience was the impetuous for his change. I just never registered that when the film came out and I guess it never stuck with me. So, if we were to go by the book's insights, I am wrong on that point.

    I had at least 13 of those "power of the force" figures - half of which I never saw in their packages as they were put as "stocking fillers" one Christmas (between me and my brother)... the others we found in a random village shop in the middle of nowhere in around 1987!
    It wasn't until the early 2000's when I was selling all my old stuff that I found out what any of this was worth and the rarity of such items, only to be mortified that, besides many other mistakes (I figured at the time that figures like that weird skinny brown robot or the purple guy who looked a bit like the emporer would be the last thing a fan would want!), I had put the staff from the weird yellow and green salamander looking guy with a bunch of ewoks that I'd sold ...

    Like you, I felt that Han’s mannerisms and characteristics that made him so endearing in Star Wars and ESB were completely absent. I have always chalked this up to Ford mailing in the performance and not going any further effort than he needed to. Yet, when seeing how hollow Leia’s arc is in this film, I can also squarely blame the script writers.

That would've obviously made Palpatine incredibly OP, but would explain why such a well-organized and vast military seemingly imploded shortly after his death.

But let me say a few things about the toys and merchandise that you always refer to: in Germany Star Wars toys were extremely rare. Some of the bigger stores in the bigger cities selled them.
