      @@johnhili8664 I don’t know where this is, I didn’t catch that but I will day at least someone documented it. An industrial museum is a great idea of how to use that huge space but to be safe a lot of those floors will have to be redone. Maybe then we could see what was upstairs where they got in. Also, they only showed that they accessed it through a restroom window, surely that’s not the only restroom. I wonder why he didn’t see where the next set of stairs lead up to. Afraid of getting unwanted attention? I also agree with you that people shouldn’t just be running around breaking and entering or otherwise trespassing into places closed off by the owners, even when the owner is a government. It is a neat look into the past of municipal power generation. Maybe seeing it on camera more people who know it won’t be so tempted to get a look at it in person or will lobby for it to be opened to tourism like you suggested.

    I've been there! We had a school visit to the place around 1977. Drove down a long tunnel in a minibus to get inside. It was running at the time and providing power to most of Malta. We were showed around the control room. One guage showed nearly 1000 amps. This was being drawn by a Royal Navy warship that was in Valetta harbour. I remember the batteries. We were told that they came from submarines. The high voltage contactors were submerged in a bath of oil and switched at high speed using a shotgun cartridge!
    All the turbines in use then were steam driven via oil fired boilers. The big diesel engines had long since retired. However, they were occasionally started up. We got to see that. Pretty scary. The whole floor was thumping. The engines had double acting pistons. We were shown a piston and it was huge. Easily the size of an oil drum. The place was immaculate back then. I remember seeing a machine shop fully loaded with lathes, milling machines etc. I was envious because it was better stuff than what we had at school.

      @@Super-lucky-7777 It was definitely a great school trip. I lived in Malta and had no idea this place existed. The amount of decay shown in the video is shocking. I guess when the place was in use the heat kept the damp at bay. I do remember it was very hot in there, particularly by the boilers.

      @colintinker7778 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@klagger07 The contactors had to switch thousands of volts. The power from the shotgun cartridge blasted the switching mechanism at high speed so the contacts had little time to arc before they meshed together. Shame we didn't get to see this demonstrated. It would have been impressive.

    Hi Folks, this underground treasure used to form part of Malta Drydocks, and it even used to supply power for the same yard. I have worked there for a total of 36 years up to 2003, and can assure you that at this location there are tens of tunnels, all dug out in solid rock before and during WWII, many of them used as workshops so that important works could continue even during bombardments, and I can assure you this area of Malta was the heaviest bombed, especially when HMS Illustrious entered here for quick repairs in 1942. One of the biggest underground tunnels was later used as a huge training centre for us apprentices, and once I had read somewhere that when Queen Elizabeth was taken there during a royal visit in 1954, she was absolutely impressed!

      There's loads of tunnels under Manoel Island and the fort there. I used to explore these when I was 13. We gained access via a ventilation shaft. There's also 2 huge oil storage tanks under the island too. I imagine it will be impossible to get into these tunnels now as the fort is guarded as it is now being restored.

  • @wramsey2656
    @wramsey2656 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    As a retired electrical engineer and power plant manager, i found this video top notch! A tour of 1940s power generation and underground to boot! The turbine generators were powered by oil-fired boilers the best i could tell. Normally the diesel generators were used for start-up and standby power. The fact the plant was built underground would have been astronomically expensive per Kw! But given the time, survivability was the chief design consideration. Salute to those guys who worked long hours underground to keep the plant running and maintained not seeing the light of day! The last part of the video covered the spare parts inventory, amazing that some of the parts are still left. To me the most amazing thing that you discovered: the Parsons generator (alternator as stated) cover was made from wood!!! I would have to guess it was to save metal during the war period and or lighter weight for maintenance reasons. The plants i worked in (modern 1970s through early 2000s) the generator casings were made of heavy steel. Shame a lot of the gauges had been smashed by vandals. Thank you and God speed! Please be careful as you know such facilities can be very dangerous in such an aged state. You guys should be on the history channel !!! Oh yes those batteries i wonder if the casings were made of glass? Early telecom companies used back-up batteries and their casings were made of glass.

    • @ExploringtheUnbeatenPath
      @ExploringtheUnbeatenPath  2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

It's interesting that the Maltese authorities haven't bothered to decommission it, there's a lot of very valuable scrap in there. I can only assume that the vast quantities of asbestos that will be present are the reason why it's been sealed up and abandoned. Really interesting video, many thanks!

      we still manufacture stuff like this.
      The problem is that we do technical but relatively low volume stuff really well but have little to no capacity to do mass produced high volume stuff at a cost efficient price owing to the size of facility we're able to produce (owing to available space to build them and the cost in tax/rates the larger a building is), the cost of labour, and the relative costs of raw ingredients used in production of mass produced high volume items.

The company became Reyrolle Parsons in 1968, merged with Clarke Chapman to form Northern Engineering Industries in 1977, and became part of Rolls-Royce in 1989. Today the company is part of Siemens Energy.

One may think a big light panel to bath everything in brightness would be best for a place like this, but thats not the case here. the reason those end bells are wood, or a fiber material. speaking from experience im a journeyman turbine millwright for GE. usually if theyre hydrogen cooled theyll be big metal two piece end bells following inner gas shields, amongst other supporting pieces such as hydrogen seals and good sealant on the split lines, or (pumpable) end bells with "dow corning". those being light means the generator is air cooled. love seeing stuff like this!

    What a ridiculously awesome find, Bob!!! hope there’s a Part II. Malta is phenomenal, on my bucket list for sure. some of those corridors with the echos and booms reminds me of the PC horror game series STALKER. probably one of my favorite videos on your channel. Thanks!!

      Thanks for checking out, one of my favorites also. Next is a big U-boat bunker in Albania and some other military relics. The underground power station would be nice to go back too, but my list of places is really long😔

    When exploring these large underground places; have you ever gotten lost and worry you can not find your way back out?

    • @ExploringtheUnbeatenPath
      @ExploringtheUnbeatenPath  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      For underground quarries and such, it's really hard to navigate and you easily get lost because everything looks the same, but most bunkers and other facilities are not too hard to find your way back :)

    In 5:48 there is a Wurth spray can, on the right, that is a product between 2015-2020. So somebody was there recently.

    That's crazy. Who would of ever known? Thank you for sharing. How do you guys not get lost? What an amazing operation, just think of all the people that ran that place. Do you know how many people worked and or died down there? If only the walls could talk! Makes me think about the man that thought up All these things and what and how they all tied in to make it work. And the money it took??? WOW... I tried to see the time on the clock, but couldn't make it out. Phenomenal, to say the least.

    I wrote you guys two years ago about losing my house in a tragic fire during the Oregon fires and I remember watching your guys's videos to help me escape because I love what you do and life is been pretty complicated getting back where I was and shortly after the fires the love of my life and I split because it was just too much and was very hard and today about 5 minutes ago she left to go to work and I'm leaving to drive 5 1/2 hours home she realized then I realized that we didn't want to live without each other and we thought about each other everyday I just spent a wonderful weekend with her and I feel fantastic so here I am found your video watching it feeling like a million dollars and I'm sure this is irrelevant but keep making your videos love your content love what you guys do and just know that you guys are part of people's lives whether it be just your content your personalities or somewhere somebody goes to feel happy and safe please be safe out there keep doing what you're doing this world's getting nuts and I love watching you guys uncover history
