  • At 5:35 PM, The Paterson Fire Department was responding to a possible fire at 141 Main St in Downtown Paterson. Engine 1 & Engine 5 were responding to the fire. Engine 1 was Responding On Broadway & Engine 5 was responding on Straight Street. At the intersection of Broadway & Street both engines collided while responding urgently to the confirmed fire. Engine 5 T-boned Engine 1. The second before impact Engine 1 swerved to the left before it got hit, causing the Engine 1 to go crash straight into the side of the Golden Mango Supermarket. I ran up to the scene to check if everyone was ok. I went up to an injured firefighter on the ground who had a leg injury and asked if he was ok. I had to back out because this is when I was seeing smoke from the confirmed fire. There were two major scenes going on at the same time. I ran down to the fire on Main St which ended up being a 3rd Alarm Fire. I got some quick footage and I ran back up to the accident. By the time I got there mutual aid was on scene. I had phone storage problems so I missed several code 3 responses. I went back home to get some water and take some deep breaths as I was very shook, broken, and overcome with sadness; seeing two beautiful fire trucks, wrecked, totaled, destroyed, and seeing brave firefighters injured. I went back to the scene at around 8:05 and still more units on scene & responding. I wanted to speak to crews on scene as a witness to show them my video of the crash. I was then interviewed by news members, detectives, police officers, firefighters and other people at the scene. I showed the video to Chief McDermott of the Paterson Fire Department. I then started taking some pictures of the wrecked fire trucks. A total of 8 Paterson firefighters were injured, 3 of those firefighters were critically injured, and one firefighter had life threatening injuries. Hoping a speedy recovery to all firefighters involved in this horrific accident.

      Former Firefighter and driver here too. We had yearly refresh classes on emergency vehicle driver training. The law allows violating normal driver regulations when you are on an emergency run, BUT, if you do violate one, or more, its the drivers responsibility to do so with "due regard for the safety of others". Failure to do that puts the emergency vehicle operator at fault for the accident. We have had emergency vehicle drivers put in prison, mostly due to scenarios like this one, sadly though it usually involves a car and not a truck and often with fatalities. Both these drivers should loose their jobs for this accident. Speedy recovery to all injured.

      @@robertjaent6087 There are lights at that intersection, so I asume that one engine had a green light and the other one the red light. You cannot blame a driver who has a green light that he goes through it.

      @robertjaent6087 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@marcopstal9584 you most certainly can. Defensive driving, especially while operating an emergency vehicle on a run puts you at a higher standard of care than other drivers. We were taught to check all intersections while responding to a call, even those where you have a green light or no stop sign. That is part of the duty an operator has in driving an emergency vehicle on a run. Even driving your own vehicle, you should be operating your vehicle in a defensive manner, which includes never assuming someone else will not run a red light or a stop sign. To assume because you have a green light or no stop sign, and you enter the intersection without looking at what cross traffic is doing just might be the last assumption one makes in their life. You dont have to physically stop, just slow a bit and look.

    I hope they all recover, but seriously...this is INEXCUSABLE. Slow down and clear the intersections before proceeding...don't blow through them. There has already been a few comments about the lack of slowing down at intersections, we all get that as the crash made it painfully obvious. The other units we see on the video unfortunately did not practice much in the way of due regard as well. The video shows a tower ladder blowing through a red light at about 30 mph regardless of the heave traffic in the area, and an ambulance trying to use a side street against traffic to merge into the flow of traffic of the main street. Thankfully the ambulance was able to see oncoming traffic and stopped until clear then proceeded safely, but it still put them in a precarious situation that could have been another accident. This all tells me there is a much larger instance department wide of casual lack of due regard. This could be simple "first due pride" that a lot of departments have, but in large populations like Patterson, this could have become a major disaster. That storefront Engine 1 slammed into was thankfully a boarded up store, but could just as easily been full of people entering and exiting the store, and even more watching the excitement of the fire trucks from the doorway and sidewalk. This is a really bad thing to have happen to ANY department. Not only firefighters getting injured, but now there are two pieces of apparatus out of service and unable to serve the communities. The risk to first responders as well as the general public is simply too great and needs to be curtailed asap.

    Unfortunately this is what happens when emergency responders blow through red traffic lights without stopping first. This has happened to me three times in the past 10-years as I was going through intersections in a semi-truck and there was no warning prior to the intersection incursion. Emergency sirens electronic or Federal Q's cannot be heard inside semi-trucks. I've been asking the fire departments for years now to install high intensity white rotating beacons on top of fire truck and ambulance cabs in addition to all the strobe lights so they can be seen before reaching a blind intersection. Strobe lights can only be seen in direct line and do not bounce off of surrounding buildings and objects. High intensity white rotating beacons bounce off of objects like buildings, power poles, vehicles, and the roadway even if they are behind a building, they can still be seen. Still, emergency vehicles must come to a complete stop and clear a red light intersection before continuing on which obviously did not happen in this instance. This could've been a loaded bus full of people or a school bus loaded with children, or a gasoline tanker.

      Very true. All vehicles nowadays are very well insulated from out side sounds. Add in people listening to radio, or a podcast, or audio book. Talking on the phone or just having a conversation with others in the vehicle and you cannot hear an emergency vehicle anymore until it is literally on top of you so to speak.

    • @YeahNo
      @YeahNo ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@PikaChu-fy5pt The onus is on the driver to be aware of their surroundings when operating any vehicle. You’re supposed to be concentrating on driving, not entertaining yourself. Deaf people simply don’t have this issue when driving, it’s just hearing people.

      Apparently you have never been in the cab of a heavy truck.
      And, I presume you NEVER EVER have your radio on.
      In a city such is shown, the sirens bounce off the surrounding buildings making it quite difficult to pinpoint the source.
      I have been driving trucks for over 40 years and I have had a couple of very close calls though never hit

    • @YeahNo
      @YeahNo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1929modelagirl Actually I HAVE been in the cab of a heavy truck plenty of times. Also garbage trucks, light trucks, old 4wds where you have to shout to be heard, army trucks, various sized buses some packed with school children, ambulances and ridden with Deaf drivers. Still, you manage to miss the ENTIRE point of my comment. SIRENS are irrelevant when you maintain situational awareness while driving. Deaf drivers cannot hear a siren from any direction, they maintain situational awareness. Hearing drivers who don’t notice a vehicle with flashing lights all over it are just piss poor drivers.

    Someone is getting fired. 100% not excusable. Literally, no one Fire Truck, Cop, or even the CHIEF towards the end in that video slowed down and cleared any of those intersections, they all just blew right through which is a no no. His spleen was ruptured and Dr. Jackson himself operated on him, but couldn't save his life. He was the first volunteer fireman to lose his life in the line of duty.
