Lifelong Chicagoan. Very misleading to keep referring to downtown as 'The Loop' and then say there's nothing going on after dark in downtown Chicago. WRONG! What is considered downtown has expanded dramatically over the years. There's River North right across the river and a 5-10 minute walk from the Loop with a very busy nightlife and a ton of restaurants extending towards the Gold Coast and Rush street area. All of that is considered downtown.
Yup north of the river by Dearborn and clark, that area, tons of night life. But I'm not surprised, I wouldn't expect someone that doesn't know why we call it Sears tower rather than the Willis tower to understand.
Timothy Claffey I know there are parts to go but he’s specifically talking about people who are visiting. If you’re just visiting for a weekend I think their time is better spent a little further away in the neighborhoods. You might disagree but It doesn’t make his overall point wrong. Wolter's world is great, especially because he's got videos on so many countries and specific cities. He is actually from Illinois, and is Professor at a university there (but I don't know which, or if it's in Chicago).
I liked your reaction Steven. I was born in 1965. I grew up in Logan Square. Pure Chicago. I do go downtown often. I don't like being downtown for night life type stuff but Timothy is 100% correct: There is a ton of stuff to do. It's not New York but there's a lot going on. As it happens, I prefer the Northwest side for night life type activities.
Great video, Steven! You mentioned that you should go to the neighborhoods that aren't the loop, but then you said you probably shouldn't go to the suburbs; what neighborhoods do you mean then? (I am assuming "the loop" is like Manhattan and you're saying to not avoid the "Brooklyn, Queens, etc."?)
Public transportation is to blame for the excess amounts of alcohol being consumed. I played in a band with 2 people from Houston and they said they never drank as much as they do now in Chicago. They said it's so easy because theres always an open bar and with public transportation and easy way to get home. In Houston they had to drive or reserve cabs so it's not like Chicago.
i do know people who like it and use it i just didn’t have an awesome experience personally, definitely down to give it another try when i’m there again this year though lol
