Glad you made this video because I feel like I can always find East Asian authors but never too many South Asian.

Oh my god I always assumed you were Tamil but today I *know* you are Tamil. Hello my fellow Tamilian! I think I must admit that you can find South Asian reads around here and there but sadly, a lot of people's idea of being Indian/South Asian seems to be limited to Bollywood's Hindi/North Indian and maybe a little bit of Pakistani heritage thrown in, but us, Tamils - South Indians and Sri Lankans - tend to be left out. :( Thank you for this video!

I also really love Roshani Chokshi's middle-grade series, Aru Shah and the End of Time. It's super fun and adventurous, like the Percy Jackson series, but based on Hindu mythology.

Love that finally there are some recommendations from south asian authors. On Indian mythology I recently read 'The Palace of Illusions' which is a retelling of Drupadi and I loved. Another one by same author is 'The Forest of Enchantments' which is on Sita. While searching I I found a lot of books on Indian mythology. There are some more which I loved are 'The namesake', 'The Henna Artist' and the sequel.

Thanks so much for this video! I wrote down every rec, I really need to read more books by AAPI authors! I have read several of Sandhya Menon's books--When Dimple Met Rishi, There's Something About Sweetie (also my fave!) and From Twinkle, With Love. They are really fun and adorable books, and the cultural aspects were woven so well into the stories. I started Blue Skinned Gods last night, and it was so hard to put down!

so happy you made this and looking forward to more South Asian recs! My goal is to read 30 SA author books this year.
Some of my favorites have been books by Adiba Jaigirdar (loved loved loved Hani and Ishu's guide to fake dating so much), Jhumpa Lahiri (classic), Sajni Patel (cute romantic books-favorite was first love, take two), and Balli Kaur Jaswal (Erotic stories for Punjabi women was amazing)
I'm excited to pick up All My Rage and Marriage of a Thousand Lies

My bestie is from Sri Lanka, the other day I talked about that since I met her, I’ve been seeing more people or stuff of her culture all over my social media, especially TH-cam and TikTok. I’ve been enjoying it and surprising from what I’ve learned. Especially when I learn some words in Sinhala! She’ll get a kick out of this! I’m going to send her this video.
Ps: I’ll definitely read these books so that way I can feel closer to her in a way or give me an idea! I can’t wait to learn more about it!!!

Rn I’m on my rereading journey of Rick riordan’s mythology series. Been done w PJO and working thru TKC. Before that I think I was not in the mood to read romance for a while. Besides mythology retelling (mainly Greek) the only genre I read is romance😂so I’m trying to get back into fantasy. Once I’m done w 2/3 of TKC or finish it, then I’ll read 1 of the 3 fantasy books I acquired in March

Definitely look up the trigger warnings for girls burn brighter. I didn’t and found the book to be a bit disturbing. Basically any awful thing that can happen to a woman in South Asia was in the book.
Also I highly recommend A Place for Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza! It’s about an Indian Muslim American family. It’s a beautiful, heartbreaking tale of an estranged son who reunites with his family at his sisters wedding.

i loved these reccomendations. i feel like we don't have as much representation in literature compared to visual medias (i.e movies and shows). The only thing I want to mention is related to Mansions of the Moon- Buddha was born in Nepal and he was a Nepali prince. So many of us in the Nepali diaspora struggle with establishing our own national identity, and our nation's contributions are often overlooked or attributed to India. I just wish the author would have kept that in mind.

As a South Asian person who wants to read about South Asian people I am getting sick of how every story surrounding every South Asian protagonist has to revolve around their culture. Can't I just read a story about a South Asian character and NOT have it be about their culture? Way too many times the characters are too stereotypical for me or the story involves some personal struggle having to do with their culture, I'm sorry but that's just boring to me now. So yeah, I am looking at all these kind of videos lol
and don't let the name fool you I am South Asian lol, I am just a big fan of the Yakuza games. lol
