    “You should never delegitimization someone’s accomplishments by accusing them that it’s because of their background and not because of their hard work” PREACH LINH THANK YOU I’m tired of people saying “duh of course the Asian kids are top of their class” or “of course you got a perfect score on the final you’re Asian” I didn’t pull an all nighter just for people to use my race to justify my scores. Period.

      I’m not Asian but I have a few friends from the Philippines and it makes me sad that they get good grades but people just assume it’s because of their race. NO, I study with them and they work damn hard and they have actually made me a more productive person! However, I also find that, as a white girl, I am also presumed to not be studious/ be a hard worker and it took a while until people fully took me seriously so it works both ways. Moral of the story? People suck aha :)

      Hii! I highly suggest you try reading poetry by Nikita Gill and Rupi Kaur. They are both South Asian descents and incredible poets/writers. Nikita Gill covers a lot of topics and uses a lot of her creativity in her writing. She also wrote a book that retells classic fairytales but with a more modern, feminist, and ambiguous touch. Rupi Kaur writes a lot about overcoming trauma, getting back up on your feet, and loving yourself. They also represent South Asian culture. :)

    Thank you for promoting the brown cultures too because usually non-asians consider asians as only those with a "Chinese face" and the brown ones are simply Indians. Non-asians simply stereotyping asians as only the "Chinese faces" and the brown people go down without any recognition from the world. These book recommendations are fantastic and everyone looking for good books would probably read the quality books

    YESS!! this is the content the world needs right now. i never realized how alienating reading books with white (sometimes male) protagonists until i started reading books with asian protagonists. a rec that is hauntingly relevant right now and doesn't ultimately deal with race but it touches well on the idea of being so assimilated to american culture that one feels alienated from their racial/ethnic heritage (which i something i deal with a lot unfortunately): severance by ling ma!

    omg i have been so bothered by the fetishization of mixed race people!! I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. People don't realize the reason mixed race people are seen as more attractive is literally racist towards Asians by saying they need to be more white to be beautiful!! I'm Chinese and my boyfriend is Jamaican and I swear I'm going to pull my hair out if I keep having to hear how cute our future babies will be because they'll be a "nice latte colour". I'm shocked that this is so normalized and really hope we can all take the time to reflect on our own prejudices.

    • @annoyedbyyourface
      @annoyedbyyourface 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Just an FYI - Jamaica is a multi-racial country (as is *all* Caribbean nations), so when you talk about someone from there, you need to be ethnic-specific if you're focusing on race. Saying your bf is Jamaican doesn't actually say what race he is.

    I highly recommend Patron Saints Of Nothing by Randy Ribay - a coming of age story about a Filipino-American teenager uncovering the truth about his cousin’s murder. So informative about the drug war (for someone who’d never heard about it before :/ ) but it’s also so touching and sweet at times ! I can’t explain it properly but believe me when I say it’s amazing !!!

    I'm not Asian American but I do want to share my experience against racism. My mum is middle eastern and greek and my dad is Russian. I grew up in a very Russian and Slavic household. And when we moved to America I could speak fluent English but people would make fun of me from a young age for being Russian. And legit called me Stalin. And discriminate against me for being Russian. They would call me a spy, killer, etc. It really hurt but I am proud to say I am a proud Russian :) and to all the Asian American people out there have an amazing day yall are some of the most cultured,sweet,nice and amazing people ik :D
    EDIT: my mum and dad are both half Caucasian and no for all the white people watching you are not caucasian. being caucasian comes when you are from the Caucasus mountain region which is near and partly in the middle east that makes you caucasian. Being white does not make you caucasian please do your research because you are literally defining yourself as a different race. Some additional information my mum and dad are both half Armenian (Armenian s a country in the Caucasus region) but my dad is half Russian and my mum is half greek. this makes me half Armenian and 1/4 greek and 1/4 Russian (i think) but I just wanted to share my experience with growing up being partly Russian and yes I did get discriminated for being caucasian because whenever I said I was they would say that caucasian people are white. Which again is not true. So thank you and gn

It’s sad though because I feel like the Armenian community tends to be slightly racist too (at least I’m the area I live, I have no idea about diasporas in other countries). Also ya totally agree with the Caucasian thing, it’s very misused

    Thank you Linh for these diverse recommendations!! You make each and every book sound so fascinating that I wish I could read all of them at once! :D I myself am not Asian-American so I don‘t want to act like I understand your struggles well, but I‘m also a child of partially immigrant parents in Europe. However being light skinned (and many other non-stereotypical factors), there have been a lot of times I experienced discrimination from both people of my own ethnicity as well as from people of my own nationality. Anyway, thank you for talking about your and many people‘s hardships and thank you for bringing attention to these broad issues. After all, the best we can do in this situation is to maintain an open communication so that everyone is made aware and will hopefully one day ‚unlearn‘ racism as you say. ^^

    don’t know who will see this but I want to recommend The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee!! plot wise it’s chick lit, technically it’s historical fiction, and reading experience is A++ because of the protagonist’s practical, unassuming, yet witty and unique voice! Like seriously it’s become my favorite book ever. it’s about a Chinese American girl living in the South at a time of increasing segregation, and handles issues like racism (African American and Asian), family and love, and of course her coming to her own and learning to love and accept who she is.

I’m a white person even though I have some North African heritage so I can’t say I’ve experienced racism, but all around I see stupid little jokes that aren’t particularly harmful on the surface, but it shows a deep rooted prejudice and discriminatory mindset and therefore should be thought of just as bad as shouting in the street. I also go to school with a huge Asian percentage of students, so I’m surrounded by people who have had a constant flow of small snide remarks especially during the period of time before the lockdown, when the illness was solely in China. I also have very strong beliefs about saying “I love biracial people
