The melody to "Lovin' You" was originally created as a song Minnie Riperton would sing for Maya when she was a baby. Near the end of the unedited "Lovin' You", Riperton sings "Maya, Maya, Maya". So sweet.

@sean From wiki, `According to the liner notes from Riperton's compilation album Petals, the melody for "Lovin' You" was created to be a distraction for her baby daughter (Maya Rudolph) so that Minnie and her husband Richard could hang out. Maya was in the studio with Riperton on the day it was recorded and Riperton can be heard singing her daughter's name at the end, but only in the unedited or album version. The song fades out early in the radio edit because the disc jockeys felt that the repeated "Maya" was being overdone and that it would be misunderstood as a religious chant.`

@Talkin Bout Nawlins I am! I first heard of them from "Find Yourself" on Trick Bag. Really like their music, super funky with the right amount of soul. Though do you have any more recommendations? I really enjoy Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder etc. I always love listening to new music, so I'm all ears! I'm only 20 so right now I'm trying to play catch-up on all the good music I've missed. Have you heard any Idris Muhammad? Dude is super funky. Michael Henderson is also I think, very underrated.

I love that in a way people are just now finding out that THE Minnie Ripperton was her mother. She inspired many vocalists and sort of paved the way/popularized using whistle registers as a style of singing, which Mariah Carey later on catapulted said style as one of her signatures. I think it’s more than evident enough to say that Maya Rudolph has made a name for herself then, because we know her more from her own work than being born from a great vocalist.❤❤

Almost since her birth my granddaughter has been mesmerised by Lovin You. It is the one song that calms the almost two year old. It's just like a lullaby. Lovin You has always been a favourite song of mine.
When I used to babysit my nephew When was in junior high school, he would immediately stop what he was doing, flap his arms to the music for a few seconds, then crawl into my lap for a nap. He's now a 6'3, bearded, married 26-year-old man, but that song brings back such wonderful memories of him as a baby for me.

I Remember Hearing "Loving You" When it Was Released in 1974, I Was 4. We Were Just Moving into Our Apartment. It Was The Most Beautiful Melodie I Have Ever Heard, and Her Voice, Oh Man, Her Tone and of Course Those High Notes. Many, Many Songs Has Had and Unwavering Impression on Me, But That one and Parliament/Funkadelic's "Flash Light" Had The Most Impact. To This Day, Whenever I Hear Either of Those Songs, I Have To Stop and Listen. Back To Minnie, I Miss Her and Wish She Was Still Here. It Really Feels Like The World Has Lost a Little Light Now That She Departed.

Perfect Angel, the entire album is brilliant. as a child, i played it over and over holding that album staring at the beautiful person singing as if I knew her. it got me through many summers. even today, i woke up feeling some kind of way and I went straight to Minnie's, Reasons, then the rest of the album, of course, and I can now go on. I want you to know that her impact upon me is beyond pivotal.

I truly love this album. It's brilliant!
I know exactly what Maya means when she says that music is representative of that time to her. It is to me as well. I remember being a kid in grade school and hearing "Loving You" on the radio in the family car and being transfixed by the beauty and purity of the voice and music coming out of the speakers. I remember the road we were on when I first heard it and that is was near the library. I used to ride my bike a couple miles to the library to check out books and records but I think that day my mom took me and that beautiful song came on the radio. And, my mom didn't turn it off when it mentioned making love. She must have been transfixed by it too. When I put it on for my wife and kids decades later explaining how important the song was to me, they didn't get it. It was one of those "daddy is weird" moments. I guess it's one of those deals where you had to be there and experience it in context.
