  • Ameloblastoma is a non-cancerous or benign tumor of the jaws. They are slow-growing and locally aggressive tumors. Ameloblastoma is a tumor of odontogenic epithelial origin or its remnants. The possible odontogenic tissues that are thought to give rise to ameloblastoma are as follows:
The enamel organ of the developing tooth germ, remnants of dental lamina also called epithelial rests of Serres, remnants of Hertwig's epithelial root sheath left after root of a tooth is completely formed and are known as epithelial rests of malassez, next possible origination site is the reduced enamel epithelium which is the epithelium that covers a tooth crown after the enamel of the crown is formed and until a tooth erupts into the oral cavity and finally, ameloblastomas may also arise from the basal cell layer of the oral epithelium and this is the rare most origination site of ameloblastoma.
Ameloblastomas can be divided into four main types and this division is based on their four different clinicoradiographic presentations. These four types are listed as the conventional solid or multicystic ameloblastomas, unicystic ameloblastomas, peripheral ameloblastomas and malignant ameloblastomas. The conventional type accounts for 75 to 86 % of all cases, unicystic ameloblastomas accounts for about 13 to 21 % of all cases, peripheral ameloblastomas arise in the gingival soft tissue and accounts for only 1 to 4 % of all cases and finally, the malignant ameloblastoma where the tumors exhibit a malignant behavior and it’s the rare most type, occurs in far less than 1 % of all cases of ameloblastomas.

Cell rests remain there throughout life and cause pathologies only when they are stimulated by any means !
