I wish most therapists actually thought like this and cared this much for their patients. I've had a therapist block me after telling him it wasn't helping me much going every week so i wanted to go every other week. And a friend of mine had a therapist of almost 10 years actually get jealous and disapprove of the idea when my friend told her that she felt like she wasn't making progress anymore and wanted to look for other options, which led to kind of a fight and they stopped talking at all. I know we're all human, but it sucks when a professional that should "care" for your health seems to throw that out the window so easily.
These therapists sound like they either need immediate mandatory therapy themselves or they need to be revoked of their titles. This is extremely toxic and unacceptable behaviour on the part of the therapist, and they should seriously be reconsidering if this is the right path in life for them. As a psychology student myself, I am not joking.
I totally agree not all therapists are trained the same way (since they end up specializing in some areas in school, just like any other university programs). That's why reading up therapy approaches and different techniques each therapist uses can help you predict the shape of the treatment you'll be getting. It also helps isolate *what kind* of incompatibility you're running into (personality, technique, approach, values). It also really tests your conflict resolution skills on top of that since you work on advocating for yourself (and to do that, you need shared vocab)
I left my last therapy session full of anxiety, we never talk about what we should. Feel like I waisted 3 years of my time. My anxiety is still bad, probably worse since I feel like I cant trust someone who i should feel vulnerable with.
1)WHEN do you say enough is enough of a plateau? 2) What difference does it make if you SWITCH your therapist vs taking a break from therapy as a whole regardless of going through the termination phase with THAT therapist??? Thanks:)))
It can be that you and a therapist don't connect. You can have the best therapist in the world, but if you don't mesh well, they can become worse than useless while another that "gets you" can do so much more even if they're not as good.
Dr. K, I'm glad you try to come up with plans for reevaluating instead of just cutting off your patients and just saying "ok bye, go find someone else" :D
So, here in South Africa you don't get to choose your psychologist And if the psychologist decides they don't want to deal with you, your only option is to go private
I suppose the answer is in the question. If things are coming slowly, they are coming, just slowly, in small chunks, and you'll probably notice this. If the progress you're making is none, zero, zilch, or it is coming slowly but it doesn't feel meaningful, you're probably stuck. And... you can talk this through with the therapist.
With a $140/hr rate + weekly sessions, that's $3,360 for 6 months. Doable but still a big sum. But that amount is spread across 6 months + switching therapists really early might make you run into the same plateau problem, so you might end up spending more than just sticking to the 6-month-then-reevaluate plan. Tbh this is assuming the worst case of not discussing with other people within your support system (but outside your therapist). Having someone who can talk therapy logistics with can drastically reduce the 6 months and make you feel like you have more direction in how you approach your treatment plan (kind of like feeling backed up in exploring your doubts)
i recently lost a really good therapist but if i think about it i was definitely stuck, the next one did seem different but suddenly stopped seeing me so now i'm with a new one and it's a totally different type of therapy, family internal systems i think it is, interesting so far open to see if it helps
What if my therapist said I'm not ready for therapy because I do t have a day of the week we can chat consistently. How's that right? I'm not ready for therapy because I'm working a bunch? Tf
I got therapy through a low-cost clinic that had sliding scale pricing because the therapists were students. There might be one in your area. I think I paid $65 (in total) for several months of therapy.
@@cobalt1754 i think you misread my intention lol. i don't wanna go to therapy i just think it's insane to live your life just looking for someone to listen to you talk about your life and tell you how to fix it. i can't imagine living my life just going from therapist to therapist trying to find one that helps me cope the best lmfao
There are plenty of people whove gone through many therapists. At some point. The client has to grow a much more appreciative outlook of the world. You can look at the world negatively you can also look at it positively. And that is a choice for the most part.
@@PessoaAleatoria01 Thats definitely true but does not seem to be true for majority of cases where the patient has gone through 5 or more therapists... Like I dont think the problem is the therapist after that.
There's probably an underlying issue that the therapists haven't identified yet. "Just be grateful" isn't actionable, nor does it address the root of the problem. It's a bandaid, not a solution. Why do you think it's a solution?
@@cobalt1754 it depends on the issues right. However in my experience the problems people have in life for the most part that have gone through multiple therapists, and who think it's the therapists fault, seem to be very trivial with daily experiences of things just not meeting their expectations. The reason these people become depressed isn't because of these external factors but because they generally just have a negative view of life. Many times that literally is the only problem for these people. What I've seen is that many of those with this problem blame the therapists for saying things like that when that literally is the only problem they can solve. But see they are also taught how to end up having gratitude and showing a better appreciation for their life and the things around them, however they revert to the "this therapist is just a bad therapist" because of some terribly misunderstood science that actually does show that just having a positive appreciation of life can massively change your mood. Mind you one of the reasons so many teens have this issue is because of the fact that their lost but they also think they know better. And this becomes a problem especially when we hear people in social media develop this trend of "just having a better outlook isn't a solution to mental problems, and that it's almost always external factors" it's not. Many times it is these internal factors in these cases were speaking of. So because they have been brainwashed to think they know something about psychology they show this distrust in anybody who shows other behaviors than what they were taught was a correct way of psychology. And it's not. Its not always external factors for these people. These people were speaking of most are just naive teens who think that their therapists are just trash. And that's just not the case I highly doubt that when they've gone through five in the area. Because Ive seen and met a lot of them and it's just not true what they're saying. These therapists are incredibly smart. And mind you this is also something Happy Gamer GG shares as well in some of his videos that having a positive outlook on life IS a solution we can do to begin working on any deeper problems and that sometimes that's the solution itself. But like I said the biggest hurdle is the foundational mindset that the internet, and people such as yourself, are better forms of education than my therapists. And the real problem is this ignorance and slight ego rather than the therapist. This is why when talking about those who have gone through multiple therapists, the problem mostly is not the therapists. Its literally their entire mindset that is based on this ignorance and slight ego. And the misinformation of social media. Because we CAN actually "just get a better outlook on life and think positively" sometimes you just have to be taught that and Healthygamergg does this too where he explained that he'll have his clients grab a book and list five things a day they're proud of or happy for. So this isn't like sudoscience. This is basic psychology.

Your friend's therapist should put away their degree for a minute, get some paid leave or vacay, and get some therapy themself lmfao.

Plateau
@HealthyGamerGG Wow, so many therapists will let you sit on a plateau forever as long as you are paying.
and then there's my ex therapist who never voiced those thoughts to me to keep collecting the paychecks as long as possible😅
Usually what I do is I just quit therapy for a while and come back lol
I have no idea how healthy that is

This is what I was thinking myself. I am surprised he didn't answer this in the video.
Well if only there would be enough therapists available...
I can't even find one decent therapist in my area with availability and you want me to find several 😢
Ive been fired by therapists due to this.
Ok, what are your weaknesses then, Dr K >:)
If only my therapist would have done this. Instead they just let me sit there without going anywhere

Well, change therapists 10 times. Best progress I had is on my own. Really don’t get it.

Or go to church? And fix your problems completely. Therapists don't offer spiritual guidance and can't fix your problems only God can.
Only God can fix your problems this man is only making money off of the fear he can create inside you. Name one problem a therapist can fix.
Therapy is too expensive imo
I pay up for it I’m just saying
Do you have insurance?
