    Aircraft Mechanic here! What you’re dealing with on the axles is what we call galvanic corrosion... It's when two dissimilar metals, i.e. aluminum hubs and a steel axle shaft, are press fit together and an electrolyte (water) technically fuses the two metals together due to their different majoring alloys. We see this a lot on aircraft because of the steel components and aluminum sheet structure, typically on piano style hinges. In the past I’ve had to cut out two whole door hinges and skin to repair the damage. That corrosion is no joke. Loving this build so far by the way!!

    • @Taylordrifts
      @Taylordrifts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both the axle stubs, and the hubs are steel though. However, looking at the new hubs, they come completely uncoated.

    My trick for bmw axles is to use the axle pusher that you used, map gas torch, and a big hammer. Heat the hub a decent amount, tighten the puller on the axle until it stops. With pressure on the axle smack the center of the tool with a mini sledge hammer. Each time you hit the center with the hammer it should free it up enough to tighten the tool again. Repeat until the axle comes out 👍🏼

    Speaking of lock tight, I like the orange now. Comes out easy but holds better than blue. It's nice for stuff that needs a lot of vibration resistance and more heat resistance than blue

    I did my Axles and Diff Bushings, wheel hubs / bearings in my garage, and boy let me tell you that was the most frustrating job I’ve ever done, and I had racejacks 24” lift.
    Stripped a rotor hat screw, no matter how I tried to extract it, it was impossible. Eventually found a special bit to drill it out. Don’t get me started on the Axles no matter how hard I beat on them I was only able to get one out, had to order the special puller to get it out!

    Not only does Turner have a bunch of stuff for bmws, but their customer service is amazing. I got a part that wasn't fully welded, and when I called them, without hesitation, they overnight me another one even before I sent the first one back. This was an expensive part too. Their prices are on the higher side for a lot of stuff, but it's worth it if you want quality.

  • @ChasingPerfection

    You can usually get axles out if you put them in a press under some pressure and heat up the knuckle. Sometimes leaving it sit overnight soaking while under pressure. Make sure you have something below or the axle bungie corded to the press so it doesn't mach 4 into the concrete floor.

    1) I hope you bought a lotto ticket the day Raldo came over and helped with the clutch. I mean easy trans install, and you finally got those axles out! You had some luck that day, even if you borrowed it from someone else. 2) on the upper hose, I would think that a parts store would have it, or a BMW dealer, if you have one in town.

    One thing I used to do on stuck axles in fords is you heat up everything with a torch, map gas is usually fine then hit it with nitrous or refrigerant to cool off the axle very quickly. You don’t want to get the axle glowing or anything that hot but once it’s up to temp just crack the bottle at it and it can free the rust when the axle contracts

    Not sure anyone has commented this or if you’ve looked it up, but the axle is pressed into the wheel bearing (obviously) and the only way I’ve gotten them apart is how bmw tells you to do it…puller on the wheel hub and yank the hub ripping the inner race of the wheel bearing out, destroying the bearing. It’s a tight fit.
