    Those axles are press fit from factory. Removing them for service requires a hydraulic bmw puller that mounts onto the wheel hub. Putting them back in uses the same puller with different attachments to press the hub, bearing, and axle all together.

      @@jasonbirch1182 when theyre good, theyre so good. I have an e46 m3 thats my daily drift car thats from texas and ive had none of those problems. Other than the big 3 that needs doing on all e46 m3s theyre stout cars that are incredible to drive. I was surprised at how untrue the bmw sterotypes are. Its been surprisingly easy to work on, the issue ive had is when i broke the lca i needed to take the axles out to get the bolt out. But every car has its flaws and jobs that are hard to do. But other than that i was shocked at how much thought went into every little detail, down to the shape of the windows. They make no whistle at any speed no matter how little you have them open. Its the little shit like that that you wouldnt realize how nice it is to drive until you live with one for a while. Theyre fantastic cars and i love mine to death. Its the best car ive ever had and i paid under 20k CAD for mine, so at that price its the best value car i can imagine, no other used car in that category is as good as it. Also i forgot to mention how shockingly cheap parts are for it, and also how incredibly spacious the interior is. When going to a drift event i can pack all my tools, spares, 6 tires, my foam bed sleeping bag and pillow, camera equipment, a big ass cooler and other drift event stuff into my m3 (all this stuff ive struggled to fit in my parents suv) then go drive it to the event, take the drift stuff out, set my bed up in the trunk and sleep in the car at night and drift it during the day. Its such a good car that ive had the same idea as taylor since before he got the second m3, i wanna get another e46 m3 thats not as nice as my current one and have it as my drift car so i can drift it with no remorse or worry about how im gonna get to work the next day. It was stressful breaking my daily driver at a drift event and being "stranded" unless i could whip something together that afternoon, but luckily i got it fixed enough to limp home

  • @srmx518

    As a bmw tech, I haven’t had axles that bad yet. Something seems off. But we do have a thin threaded pipe that screws onto the end of the axle and can be pulled through the hub. You can find them online, comes in a kit, small kit. Maybe worth getting and keeping with you.

    Taylor, you already do some fantastic and innovative work. Have you considered equipping your shop with a mill and a lathe? I think you could really take things to the next level. You could save money fabricating more specialized parts rather than buying, and you could definitely implement some of the ideas I'm sure are floating around your dome. It seems the next logical step to me, that is if you can break away from the steady stream of project cars and find the time to pick up the necessary skills or refine them if you're already in possession of them. Surely this has crossed your mind?

    • @SirVic42
      @SirVic42 ปีที่แล้ว

      On one of his recent livestreams, he mentioned getting a milling machine. They aren't cheap, but I believe he said he had the shop wired with the ability to power such a beast. May just be a matter of finding a used one locally at a good price.

    • @philbert006
      @philbert006 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SirVic42 no, they aren't cheap. But they are affordable on this age of CNC capabilities. Manual machines are on the way out and can be had at a great price. He's def set up for one, although three phase isn't necessary. It will allow you to get the most out of any kind of industrial equipment. I haven't had opportunity to catch any of the live streams, I see have I missed something that I feel like is right in his wheelhouse. Thank you, sir

    I worked on M4 Gt4’s at my last job. The ole double hammer method or destroying a 2x4 was the only way to get the axles out. Dropping the rear subframe onto pedestals on a huge wooden table is the move and it brings the work off the floor. Plus install can be a 1 person job if you trust yourself! Love these cars but just like anything else they have their PAINFUL areas and dumb design points.

    You can use the cut-off wheel and clean out the splines. I live in Canada in the rust belt, and when I had to replace the wheel bearings in my 02 crv, the axle wouldn't go back into the hub. The only thing that worked was lightly scoring the splines with a cut of wheel.

    Taylor, do you ever consider getting taller shirts? Your always showing your lower back in videos. I hate bending down and my shirt comes up. I am 6"2 and x-lrg or 2x large. We all know you love black shirts lol... but for me I can't stand short or wide shirts. I need 1x or 2x but mostly for the length which is never long enough. I think alot of us guys in our 30s would agree. Get some tall tees for the workshop at least 🤙 Id buy shirts from your website and I never knew you actually had merchandise items. Maybe you should consider more announcements on your merch site because I never knew AND I have watched tons of videos from you for years now and can't recall you ever saying a quick, "check it out guys".
    I've watched you for 5 years. On and off sometimes in the past though.
    You look tall, but me I hate working on shit in my driveway because I feel like my neighbors are seeing a pale backside of me that they don't want to see 🤣 ESPECIALLY when im wearing all black 😆

    Sounds like your splines are twisted on the axles

    Wheel Bolts are one piece and one operation to install in manufacture so cheap. Wheel studs are two pieces including the nut and then takes two operations to install so a large cost and time deficit.
    Engineers choice, studs. Accounting- wheel bolts. As wheel bolts seldom fail or give problems manufacturers don’t care what other people to do with the car later or any fiddling when servicing

    Sand blast the splines, and use shit load of antiseize when installing, grease is not the best solution for long run 😉
