  • What watts work best on each device? In this video we're testing the performance of the Legion Go vs the Rog Ally in 14 games at 12, 15, 20 & 30 watts as well as 720p and 1080p resolution. The Legion Go seems better when it comes to higher watts and the Ally seems better at lower watts as of the making of this video.

      @@matthewgould9391 Hey, I found Performance for the "Thermal Mode" and Efficiency for the "OS Power Mode" works well can gives you 20 watts. Then if it's a less demanding game, 1200p looks a lot better than 800p. I found 800p is looking a bit blurry on my device in a lot of games. The latest AMD Driver are working well for me, and it's what I run on the Ally as well. I have a tutorial here if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/lT7NdZRMQe4/w-d-xo.html.

    One of the best comparisons I’ve seen so far and more in line with what I expected in the up to 20w range. The Go has to use more power for it’s display and the faster ram so it’s short for the APU

  • @ridp604

    The Legion Go, like the Ally when it came out at 15 watts, sets the GPU frequencies lower and therefore performance is poorer.
    You would have to compare cpu and gpu frequencies and utilisation for the same watts. I appreciate the work behind this video.

    That was a huge effort put into that video, thank you. Most definitely the Go for me, apart from the bigger screen, to compete with the Ally after about two weeks after launch is great. Excellent detailed benchmarks. One question, on the go were these performed in 800p or 720p, just double checking. If it was 800p then those neck and neck tests technically the go would be slightly ahead. And it hasn’t been optimized yet so I’m really pulling for the Go

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They are both at 720p. Realistically when in hand the Go would be running 800p so that would drop the FPS slightly. I'd say they'll be pretty close after Lenovo optimizes it when comparing 800p vs 720p.

  • @ominousview

    Thanks for the review. Why is the Ally running hotter than Go by like 3-6 degrees. What's the power draw? You should be able to get that with afterburner. Also; you forced the latest driver for the Go? Whereas the Ally got it thru Asus? Interesting comparison. I would have rolled back Ally driver to match the driver Lenovo pushed.

    You are way too underrated dude. I’m tryna decide between them both because it looks like the ally has better performance, VRR, and speakers. For what i’ve seen from the Legion Go is that it has better battery life, a case, detachable controllers with one having a sort of mouse and also a trackpad, and a better screen with a kickstand. Since you have both, which would you consider better?

Other videos I have seen have shown the go pulling ahead in some games when both are running stock with no additional optimizations which could be explained by the legions faster ram. Either way, really great video. I really want to like the Ally but the whole non response by Asus regarding the sd card issue rubbed me the wrong way. Great video Filterless. One of the most comprehensive performance comparison so far.
    I just wish someone will do a comparison at native device resolutio with latest bios/Asus drivers vs go at 720p vs 800p and 1080p vs 1200p (equivalent 16:10 resolution). Cheers

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am planning on doing an 800p, 1200p and 1600p test in the future :). A more fair comparison would be the Legion Go at 800p and the Ally at 720p. Mainly because everyone who uses the Legion is going to do 16:10 like you said, so 800p+. And anyone who uses the ally will use 16:9 or at least 720p+. The main issue right now is no custom resolutions on the Legion. Since 900p is a nice mix, it'd be nice to have something between 800p and 1200p on the Legion.

    • @zacthegamer6145
      @zacthegamer6145 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@filt3rless Yeah exactly. Most of these comparisons are useless for end user as they’re either going to use 720p/900p/1080p on the ally and 800p/1200p/1600p (mainly for indies) on legion go. So, I reckon 720p vs 800p and 1080p vs 1200p is more representative for the end user as legion go decided to go with 16:10 aspect ratio.
      I look forward to your future coverage. Keep up the great work. Happy gaming :)

      That's a tough one! If you have any way of getting your hands on both before buying (some places have them on display) then I'd do that. If you're not interested in the detachable controllers or kickstand then the Ally has much better speakers and VRR makes it look smoother. Keep in mind there is SD Card issues on the Ally so if you're planning to use an SD Card the Legion Go could be the way to go.
      Also I might have a faulty unit on my Legion Go. I have a video on the channel about it and both USB-C ports kick my SSD's when directly plugged in so I can't use them. I have to run it through a powered HUB to be able to use the external hard drives.

    How are you running 720p or 1080p on the legion? You only have the option of 1200p or 800p on the legion go because of the resolution scale. If you're running at 800p or 1200p on the legion and the asus at 720p or 1080p it makes sense performance would be a little lower on the legion because you are pushing more pixels on the legion.

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Both are 720p and 1080p. In real world playing, everyone will be using 800p vs 720p on the Ally and 1200p vs 1080p on the Ally. So they'll be pretty close after Lenovo optimizes it for lower watts.

    • @20mat
      @20mat 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you had any kind of working brain cells in that cranium of yours, you'd know that identical specs do not always mean identical performance, and there are MANY factors and variables that contribute to performance more than just the chips being used.
      How about, the cooling being used? Affecting performance via thermal throttling which could make all the difference in HANDHELD devices like these?
      Differences in software and bios configurations that could lead to instability and crashing that wouldn't be reflected on benchmarks because you couldn't start the benchmarks to begin with?
      There's also power consumption and power limits that are placed by the individual manufacturer that can differ between each of them and lead to different power ceilings, because one manufacturer could put a cap on how much power you can squeeze out of a chip in their system when overclocking or changing power limits, like how laptop manufacturers could have the same exact CPU in their systems but one tops out at a lower TDP than the other.
      Should I continue or do you understand now?

      @filt3rless  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Right now the joysticks on the Legion Go are pretty bad IMO. It feels like way more of a deadzone than the Ally has and then has a really big ramp up at around 60-70% making them really inaccurate. There should be an update at some point from what I've seen, but I can't recommend them if you're used to an Xbox Controller as it's way off what an Xbox Controller feels like. The Ally is also slightly off the Xbox Controller feel, but nowhere near the Legion Go.

      Asus has had a lot of time to optimize the device. And the 323 bios they released a few months ago really improved performance in the lower watt range. The Legion Go should be slightly faster because of the faster RAM. However, everyone will be using 800p on the Go and 720p on the Ally. Or 1200p on the Go vs 1080p on the Ally.
      So the slightly increased resolution the Legion is pushing with it's 16:10 display should balance things out once Lenovo optimizes it, where they will be pretty close.

    as close as they are, the real difference is that the ally has a variable refresh rate display, so when using it as a hand held, i think it offers the best smoothness of gameplay , and lets you adjust the settings higher in games, with no noticeable loss of how smooth the game looks, due to the variable refresh screen the ally has. the legion go on the other hand, should produce noticeable stutters as the fram rates drop below the hz of the legions screen. even if the legion was better by some count of frames than the ally, the ally would still produce a better experience i think. anyone producing a handheld, should include a variable refresh screen in my opinion, since the actual gpus ( tho very nice) are still weak in comparison to any modern desktop gfx solution, running triple a titles on these even at low res, in most games , the frame rates can be all over the place, and with a fixed hz on a display, your sure to notice any game, if its not producing frames equal to the hz of the display. just my thought, ally would win even without any actual performance difference.

      I noticed how jagged the display looked for sure compared to the Ally display with VRR. I also use FreeSync and G-Sync displays for this same reason. For some people it wouldn't bother them, but it definitely bugs me. Even if there was a 20% difference in performance, I'd take the VRR display as the extra frames don't make up for the lack of fluidity.
