I've seen an F-15 do a real vertical climb at an ANG base. During an airshow it made a low & slow pass, gear and flaps hanging out, then went to afterburner, sucked everything up and went vertical. I could see it actually accelerate before it became a dot then disappeared directly above the runway. The noise was incredible and the whole thing was just beautiful.
I tell you as an Eagle Rider, more people need to experience just that - the "Max Climb" the power is just insane. While cruising, then maxing it out to get to Mach, is also pretty impressive.
427SuperSnake1 "yes and no at the same time" : too much for my brain xD But you're right, the take off is not that vertical. I didn't mean to be aggressive in my answer, I was just wondering ^^"
@Paulo76 - after 4 years - :D It can be called a "vertical takeoff", but it is also called an elevator run or elevator ride. If we want to be very technical, it is a vertical climb. It's basically when you accumulate speed, and then pull on the stick like there is no tomorrow, to achieve a vertical position and leave the area rather elegantly. It is generally an airshow element and has no practical uses other than avoiding flocks of birds that may come head on.
I know the F-22 is more advanced & deadly but the F-15 will always be my all time fav fighter plane. It's a beautiful design, fast, agile, versatile & has a perfect combat record. Doesn't get much better than that.
1. Absolutely nothing happens before 3:05... For a title "full afterburner vertical take off", to show 3:05 of boring taxi is a major UGH. 2. fwiw, fifteen seconds from power to rotation. 3. Not really a vertical takeoff, on the second pass the SE goes into a steep climb.
It is fun to watch any piece of equipment with that much power take off. I bet every non military pilot on the field that day took a moment to watch in awe.
It is really amazing, how big the F-15 seems compared to the other planes. But yeah - the take off was definitely not exactly vertical [otherwise we could save our money for the STOL F-35 variant].
Zack Poll In aviation a "vertical take off" is something, what a F-35B or a Harrier will do - lift off without runway - hence a F-15 can't do it due to its concept [neither any other plane except of the mentioned and maybe the Osprey [however this is not a jet] and helicopters.
Vince M Yeah - you are right. But the Osprey is a bit of a crossbreed. Anyway the F-15 is definitely NOT a VTOL - and I guess we have the same viewpoint!
Some people enjoy just looking at an aircraft from various angles and hearing the sounds. Not every video on TH-cam has to just show the landing or takeoff part. This is a good video.
I actually like this very much and appreciate you sharing it. Sound and quality are great. The best F-15E taxi & take off I have yet to find. And a shout out to Cleveland Hopkins for hosting some of the best airshows I've ever seen.

To me F-15 is one of the most fascinating jet fighters. I am curious (A what if question here) if they produced a model that combines both the F-15 ACTIVE / Silent Eagle with the lastest radar electronic equipment would we really have the need for the f-22? And wouldn't that be more efficient and effective to build off of a proven platform that has actual experience rather than a whole new plane that is ( from my understanding ) questionable?
The advanced F-15 would do pretty well for awhile but it's still basically a Gen 4 aircraft with some added capabilities. It would probably hold it's own for awhile but once China & Russia perfect their Gen 5 fighters, I think it would be in trouble. As far as the F-22 goes, it is a very capable plane (many say the best in the world) & although it hasn't seen any air to air combat yet, it has done quite well in friendly mock dogfights against newer foreign fighters. It also has better radar, stealth capabilities (internal weapons, flat angular shapes that redirect radar signals) & super cruise which gives it the ability to fly faster than the speed of sound for a long time without afterburners. So it's def a step up from the F-15 & although not totally necessary right now, probably will be in the near future.
DahFuqIsDisCrapFer It "seems" You misunderstood what I'm saying. I'm basically saying if they could combine the active and silent eagle as another variant for f-15 line up. So it could more powerful to still guard the skies and could assist until the 5th gens are more obtainable in numbers and price. Russia had did this well with their 4th gen Sukoi's and Migs. Boeing had just did this with the F/A-18 Advanced Super Hornet to give it a stealth like capabilities, larger payload capacity, longer flight time, better maneuverability etc and it fits the bill. I'm not saying the f-22 is trash like the way your interpreting it.

although not technically a vertical take off, it is a vertical climb. the f-15 has a thrust to weight ratio of more than 1, thus capable of vertical flight
Dear jss747, Vertical take-off means going about 90 degrees up from the ground. For example, you must be on the ground, NOT MOVING, and then go 90 degrees up, or vertical. Then it can be called Vertical Take-off, or in other words, VTOL.
You know what, your absolutely correct, I remember the F-22 that was supposed to be headliner at Selfridge Airforce base years ago when that wing walker fell couldn't go up due to the oxygen problems they just had it grounded and wouldn't let anyone near it. Nice display by other fighters there that year though, its the home base of the A-10's and huge squad of F-16's and the air tankers.
Was lucky enough to see the F-15 in Darwin a couple of years ago while they were up there up there on the Pitch Black exercises. What an amazing aircraft. Nice vid mate.
I got this and the Tomcat up there as the best ever made, BAR NONE! Hate one or love one they are the most iconic Jets in our history! I am a fan of both unlike some, period.
From the rumors I've heard, the F-15C may be replaced by the F-22. But I don't think the F-15E will be replaced. Bear in mind that the F-35 is still being improved. I'm not exactly sure if the 35 has even been deployed yet, so it's way early to tell. I honestly don't even think that the F-15C/E will be replaced for years and years to come.
When I was a child two friends and I were into fighter jets. One loved the F-14, one loved the F-16, and I chose the F-15 as my favorite. I don't regret my decision, and I suppose they didn't either. They're all awesome machines anyway, but I still think the F-15 is awesomer. :)
I'm 13 and it's my dream to be a fighter pilot. F-22 Raptor, A-10 Warthog, and F/A 18 Super Hornets are my favorite, and it's my dream job to fly these in the USAF
Seen many F-15s on bases around the World as a GS-15. The taxi is great but too much of it in this video. I was at Osan AFB (South Korea 1991-1993) and was able to get a great shot at the end of the runway of an F-16 and later an F-15 departing. The base sent a dude to our location and said no more photos. The cool thing was the blast from the engines was getting to us from a few hundred feet away. A person could smell the fuel. Had a few A-10s at Osan too.
I understand why you said vertical. If someone knows anything about fighters, they know they are not VTOL capable, except for the Harrier and Osprey. The F35 is changing that, but since your vid said "F15", I automatically knew it was going vertical AFTER takeoff. Nice vid.
F-15's going out of Lambert field (STL) would be vertical before the end of the main runway, and would exit the STL controlled airspace @ 30,000'. The reason for the departure was that there is a special VFR exit from the Lambert airspace @ 30000' if your flight path footprint does not leave the airport property.
Great video! Those guys are based out of Seymour Johnson here in NC. I've been to several air shows there and these guys always put on a heck of a show!
What a beautiful and powerful jet. I live in panama city beach, have seen many fly by. Sorry to see them leave Tyndall AFB. Now we have those new fangled F-22 we'll see how they work out.
We practice these maneuvers to keep proficient when we do have to be on Alert for both Air Defense and SAR. Its saved many lives being able to be on station in minutes of accidents.
Vertical take off is exactly what the space shuttle used to do and this is not vertical although it is on full AB. I got my incentive ride and thankfully the clouds cleared up allowing us to do a full AB vertical - sea level to 17,000 ft. in under 10 seconds! Mach run, 0 g, flying upside-down and sideways - awesome ride at Kadena AB, Okinawa Japan.
Yeah, we lit the burners with brakes on, then stayed level with gear up, picking up speed, pilot then asks, "You ready to pull some G's?" I said yes sir! And BAM! The stick slams back and we're like the shuttle. I felt the G-suit squeeze stomach, calves and thighs, then I heard the pilot breathing/grunting - OH S**T I forgot! That's when tunnel vision set in so I flipped the O2 supply to 100%, no good, I was done and just then we go inverted and then level. I was in bad shape after that but didn't throw up. Up comes my friend in the wingman jet, same thing - he threw up A LOT though!! What a ride!!!
If you want to see afterburner vertical take offs suggest you do a search for English Electric Lightning, they might be old videos and films but those aircraft can still show how to climb to altitude quickly shame there are no longer any flying just fast taxi runs.
Not all aircraft equipped with thrust vectoring control (TVC) can take off vertically. Sometimes it's just used for higher maneuverability. The US F-22 and the Russian Su-37 have TVC but are not VTOL capable.
This one and the F14 were always my fave Jets of all times! That won't change anytime soon! I love the fact one is still flying though! One retired too early. I agree baddest thing in the sky today! Legendary jet!
Good video of the F-15. However, I agree that it was not a vertical climb. The -15 was one of our first that could 'accelerate' in a vertical climb. Takeoff, then nose pointed straight up, and reach 10,000 ft in no time, go inverted to relieve g-forces on the pilot as he levels off, flip it and 'go on cruisin'!
Oh yea I completely agree with you that's why it's one of my favorites. That's one of the reasons why I went to airshows to feel that rumble in my stomach when when that Jet flies by and then flying past don't a sonic boom.Have you seen the su-47 I thought that plane looked cool. But I think it's cost effective because I was reading that when they retired the Great F-14 it was because of them keeping it repaired but I think they should have upgraded it.
Explore the wonder of the free TH-cam editor. You can easily edit this footage down to an interesting (albeit non-vertical) two minutes. Thanks for not playing Kenny Loggins music over the awesome sounds!
@nobdy5 The thrust to weight ratio on the F-15 keps it from being able to perform a vertical take-off. That was a steep climb, not a vertical take-off.
well... you should remove the word vertical from the title dude..
definitely,i agree wth u mate

F-15E from Seymour-Johnson AFB, NC. I spent a year and a half there working on those beasts. Awesome birds!
Don't know about you malcontents, but I enjoyed watching this magnificent plane taxiing.
nothing is better than a jet taking off with an afterburner! this sound is music!!
although not technically a vertical take off, it is a vertical climb. the f-15 has a thrust to weight ratio of more than 1, thus capable of vertical flight
Dear jss747,
Vertical take-off means going about 90 degrees up from the ground. For example, you must be on the ground, NOT MOVING, and then go 90 degrees up, or vertical. Then it can be called Vertical Take-off, or in other words, VTOL.
your videos are some of the clearest on youtube
My dad was stationed at Langley from '81-'84 with the 71st Fighter Squadron. He worked on the weapons system with the F-15 C.
That's an F-15E (Strike Eagle) out of Seymour Johnson AFB assigned to the 333rd Fighter Squadron "Lancers". Built in 1987.
I AGREE W U F15 IS MY FAVORITE AS WELL!
I'm 13 and it's my dream to be a fighter pilot. F-22 Raptor, A-10 Warthog, and F/A 18 Super Hornets are my favorite, and it's my dream job to fly these in the USAF
Rin Okumura the f 18 is a navy plane
Rin Okumura the bastards are replacing the A-10 with f-35s
I bet the A-10s could easily survive the same beating multiple F-35s could take
i like the fact that u told us when take off takes place
Nice vid.
Your vids are amazing, such good quality! Keep 'em coming!
Super Great I had the pleasure of watching the very first ones during flight testing way back in 1972-3--4
These guys are the superstars in the pilot scene :) I mean, every human loves jets or get impressed by these planes ^^
idk why but the take off was awesome
Best vertical I've seen
Great video! Those guys are based out of Seymour Johnson here in NC. I've been to several air shows there and these guys always put on a heck of a show!
The Harrier is the true master of vertical take-off
I believe you misspelt "F35"
Definitely not a vertical takeoff. Also, I wasted over 3 minutes getting to the supposed "vertical takeoff."
the f15 is fluffing invincible!
True that, I've seen a vid where an Israeli pilot landed an F 15 with one wing
_eleite_ i saw that to!
What a beautiful and powerful jet. I live in panama city beach, have seen many fly by. Sorry to see them leave Tyndall AFB. Now we have those new fangled F-22 we'll see how they work out.
Climbing like a homesick angel
F-15 has got to be one of the nicest looking fighters ever designed. Hope the Eagle stays around for a long long time.
I'm with you bro...it's too easy to moan about someone rather than compliment them. So many YT users have no life and just pick on anyone they can.
We practice these maneuvers to keep proficient when we do have to be on Alert for both Air Defense and SAR. Its saved many lives being able to be on station in minutes of accidents.
Good old Eagle. Amazing power, never beaten in combat (only by accidents)...
Oh, and it can fly and land with one wing missing. Beat that :)
Great video but nothing beats being there in person. I loved watching the air shows at Meacham field in Ft Worth Texas when I lived there.
I once got to ride along in a F-111B. Scared the shit out of me, but I'd do it again in a heart beat.
I actually saw these two f-15's take off, I was working in airline catering, we were waiting for a flight to arrive they can put a show on
Proper show off there! Amazing jet!
Saw this happen today from my back yard in Camas. They took off from PDX!!! Freakin' awesome!!!!
I tilted my head and the verticalness was suddenly awesome.
This is a 90° vertical takeoff regardless of what inexperienced pilots say
Not even, you don't even fly
Gamestyle01 according to my protractor that’s a 65 degree takeoff 🛫
Not all aircraft equipped with thrust vectoring control (TVC) can take off vertically. Sometimes it's just used for higher maneuverability. The US F-22 and the Russian Su-37 have TVC but are not VTOL capable.
most beautiful jet
This one and the F14 were always my fave Jets of all times! That won't change anytime soon! I love the fact one is still flying though! One retired too early. I agree baddest thing in the sky today! Legendary jet!
My favorite 3 are the f-15 it’s modified active version, and sr-71 blackbird
Good video of the F-15. However, I agree that it was not a vertical climb. The -15 was one of our first that could 'accelerate' in a vertical climb. Takeoff, then nose pointed straight up, and reach 10,000 ft in no time, go inverted to relieve g-forces on the pilot as he levels off, flip it and 'go on cruisin'!
i love how the title says "vertical take off" as opposed to the more common horizontal take off.
Nothing like a sound of a afterburner.
Personally, I love the video. Yeah, it's not as exciting as some but it's a really good look at the F-15s. Great aircraft.
Someone here said this before "For vertical take off, skip to 3:10 and turn monitor sideways"
Watch the Harriers for some smooth vertical takeoffs.
I've never thought about it before but those jets are fucking huge!
Explore the wonder of the free TH-cam editor. You can easily edit this footage down to an interesting (albeit non-vertical) two minutes. Thanks for not playing Kenny Loggins music over the awesome sounds!
I'll always miss the sound of the F-15 taking off. 4th FW Seymour Johnson NC aircraft!
The plane is vertical, just not the way everyone imagined.
@nobdy5 The thrust to weight ratio on the F-15 keps it from being able to perform a vertical take-off. That was a steep climb, not a vertical take-off.
Still after 30 years the most icredible Aircraft in the world! Granted the F22 is awesome, but the F15 is just a pure ass pucker.
The F-15 in all air forces had a combined air-to-air combat record of 104 kills to 0 loss
I always thought that vertical meant "up-and-down". That plane took off side-to-side, or "horizontally".
