I worked for rockwell during the b1b production . Saw them fly almost everyday for a couple years. Everytime a b1 passed final inspection. The airforce pilots would do a flyby. Most the time it was .85 @ 300ft off the deck . But every once in awhile they gave us a real treat. 100ft off the deck .95 and a pretty roll as they pulled up and flew off .
With all due respect, I have to disagree a bit. If it would have reached serial production, the title of the coolest plane should go to the XB-70 Valkyrie. But it was obsolete by the introduction of ICBMs, and I can understand why it was cancelled.
Thank you so much for sharing this. The Bone is my favorite USAF aircraft of all time! I had the honor and privilege deploying to an undisclosed location during OIF where the Bones were located and will never forget the opening of the war with the Bones launching late at night. They were fully loaded and I lost count of how many took off. The sound and feelings were unforgettable and it was so surreal listening to and watching each one launch as it was like watching fireflies during the summer as their engines were burning so bright in the distance after they departed. It was the most amazing, awe inspiring, and terrifying thing as we all knew how much they were carrying and the destructive power they were bringing to bear. Thank you for sharing this once again.
Impressive, just the right ambient light. Magnificant aircraft. I love the spool up, the exhaust nozzels close, the AB kicks in...flames, the exhaust nozzles open, more flames and the great crackling roar of those great GE F101's. The images and sounds of the greatest airpower the world has ever known. Hell Ya!
My father was a flight instructor USAF, TX in the mid 50s. Late in life I asked him the different planes he flew as we were on the way to his chemo appointment, he named so many that there was no way I could remember them all. We also spent 4 years in Hann AF base in Germany. When he got out of the military, he flew private corporate jets (Sabreliner). At his memorial service on the video at the end we played a Sabreliner taking off with that distinct sound, and the caption said Last flight and his name.
Great story, thanks for sharing. It should be mentioned that the Saberliner was originally built for the military, so in way he was flying a military jet (sort of).
I appreciate it that the video starts with the two taxiing to the runway, and testing rudder, flaps, etc. about half a second apart. What a beautiful ballet!
I had the pleasure of getting to see once take off some 20 something years ago back in school. The whole time it screamed down the runway, i couldn't breathe for how much my chest was vibrating
In 1986, I had the privilege of being one of the very first B-1B pilots to fly the aircraft... I trained under the "Great 8" guys. They were a magnificent group of pilots, almost all previous B-52 guys. I was the lone (and first) -135 pilot... who somehow got accepted to the program... to this day it is still my very greatest accomplishment. What an amazing aircraft to fly.
Most of the times I drive through Abilene, Texas, I am privileged to see these magnificent beasts (usually in flights of three) in the pattern doing touch-and-goes. I never get tired of that sight!

Was lucky to witness it myself after two days of inactivity on the bomber front (had to leave homebound inevitably the day after again)... as sunset approached, we were in for a treat. Uploaded footage as well, I positioned myself a couple of feet further up the fence. Gorgeous sight and sound of these mighty planes !! this is a level of LOUD that you cannot comprehend unless you’ve been that close before during a B-1B takeoff. Top Fuel dragster is loud, this is insane loud.

My buddy who recently retired from the program called me one evening from Ellsworth and put his phone up to let me hear 6 of them take off like this -- very impressive even over a phone!
I saw them at Mildenhall when the fantastic airshows were still running. Will never forget the noise and vibration right through my chest when it took off. Incredible!

About half way through the show it was announced over the PA that they were stopping the show because the B1 was being called up and had to leave ... NOW. I can't remember if they did an afterburner take off but they did do a afterburner low pass over show center. The ground shook and car alarms were going off.
Dyes AFB in Abilene Texas. As a Canadian, I spent lots of time there in the 90's, working on the C130's power plants. The B1's are incredible aircraft.

Captivating beauty combined with tremendous power make a this aircraft one of my favorites. I am former Navy and served onboard the USS Midway. We had the F-4 Phantoms. It was a beautiful aircraft as well. God has surely blessed the engineers and designers of our military.

I lived in Vegas for several years, right across the street from Nellis Airforce base. The B1 would take off and come straight over our house and would set off the car alarms up and down the street, it was awesome to watch at night with the flames with rings around them shooting out the exhaust. Beautiful site.

A long time ago i saw USAF recruitment commercials on TV with B1-B. The catch phrase is unforgettable. "If you like to make engine sing, we offer courses in heavy metal." With a majestic looking B1-B in the background doing afterbruner takeoff into the sunset...
Anecdote: Back around 1998 my girlfriend and I were laying, butt naked, on the carpet in front of the fireplace late at night in my house in Macon GA. Suddenly an enourmous racket shook the house, stunned we ran to the back deck to look at the night sky and we saw the low clowds tinted in an orange and red color. I recongnised the noise, a B-1 playing a trick on the sleeping town... then we realised we were naked, outside in about 40°F...

Very hard to capture the snap, crackle & pop of afterburners, but you did well. Those lingering shots of the climb out are great

Back in the 80/90s they flew over my town Taylor az at 300 ft altitude for electronic weapons training . The noise was very loud. Miss them
