    I wouldn't argue with Chris Birch, but have learned the hard way that extending the inside leg in turns where there may be stumps, rocks or roots hiding in the grass can quickly lead to injury. It's fine for open terrain like in this vid, but I have heard x pro trainers say leave that technique to the motocross guys and keep both feet on the pegs as much as possible in the woods. After transferring a nasty impact from the heel of my boot to my knee joint from a stump hidden in ground cover, I tend to agree. I enjoy these vids very much and value the great advice shared. Thanks, and keep 'em coming. BTW, if you ever come to Texas, look me up. :)

      yes, i'm a bit stunned when i watch melissa ride and somehow she has that inner leg extended even on single track. i'd much prefer to just stand and leave the motocross style for more open even terrain.

    THISSSSSSS! This is my favorite tips video for sure! I'll be practicing this very soon, but I have never heard of hanging the opposite buttcheek over the side. I also thought that I was supposed to keep my head/body forward but now I'll keep it straight up. I'm stoked to try it! You're the best, Mr. M!

    Thanks for these great videos. It amazes me how different track riding is from dirt bikes (I'm talking about sport bikes CBR,GSXR,R1 ETC). Correct technique for the dirt is called being "crossed up" on the street. You basically counter lean on the dirt. On the track you put your weight on the inside or direction you are turning foot peg, not the outside. On the street you want one butt cheek off towards the inside, opposite of the dirt. You want your upper body as low as possible, opposite of the dirt. Everything is opposite. No wonder I struggle so much in the dirt.

    Nice lessons there. And for a change I already recognise and practice these techniques lol.
    Standing and sitting with bad knees can hurt after a while, so the use of a bump in the trail (ie erosion mound) to stand up is a great tip for broken people. Bit like a seat bounce

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      sapman71 with my dodgy knees i've just stayed standing, even on very tight corners. but birchy has convinced me i should incorporate the sitting too, i've had it all come together a few times it literallly slingshots the beta out of corners! the rest of the time i just drop it or head off into the bushes. :-)

    I noticed how many pro riders set position of handlebars, like Graham, Chris... On 0:49 you can see how Chris set his handlebars. It goes str8 with forks. They move from the middle one position backwards, also clutch and brake lever in the middle or slightly up. And when you see Iron or Hobby class riders they all have handlebars position forward :) So I change position and in the beginning it was really hard for me to get used to, but now I have more controls, and I will never change that. Also changing body position like "deadlift" was big improvement :) Cheers

    I never understood what people meant when they said to weight or push down on the outside peg until someone explained it to me differently. I got confused because it sounded like you'd be attempting to stand as you got on the gas. Heard someone explain by saying don't try to push the peg down or weight it down instead try to push the peg back like you're extending your leg to the rear axle to "weight" the rear wheel. It totally blew my mind.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At some point I'll need to redo all these old training vids and explain some of the concepts in a few different ways. It's interesting how you somtimes need a few analogies about weighting or deweighting.

  • @RideAMAP
    @RideAMAP 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So much goodness! Where to start? I guess just a big thank you for the awesome tips. You didn't mention the terrain type. You ride in areas that I ride, mainly dirt, rocks and vegetation, but did Chris mention if sand or mud you would do anything differently?

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ride AMAP that's an interesting point and a few guys asked the same thing on the forums. unfortunately we just covered as many basics as possible within two days so often didn't look at how things would change in different terrain. however, if a rider is comfortable in sand then the technique remains the same from other training vids i've watched, IF the rider is experienced... the sand can just be pushed to form a berm. chris did say if the terrain was rough or challenging then standing is better and i think this would apply to mud?

    Hey, just like getting comfortable cornering in the standing and sitting position, this goes for the braking coming into the corner, too. The terrain beneath your bike should be the final judge on whether you sit or stand. Please see MXProfessor sit stand outside leg to hear his pov!

      Jeffrey Torgalski yep this is just the basic nuts and bolts and i'm sure birchy would qualify some of his statements for various types of terrain and conditions.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steve Blazethat depends how far you want to go. i started on an FE570 but moved to the two stroke once i started doing pivot turns and things where i really started to feel the weight. we've done a vid about this sort of thing already: th-cam.com/video/HIdBljML-80/w-d-xo.html

    My buddies think I'm a decent rider because I can wheelie for days, and I jump pretty ok for a rookie. But my deep dark secret is that I SUCK at turning. Almost every crash I have is because I couldn't turn quick enough to avoid an obstacle. 🤕

      2008 KTM Rider if road riding you'd be surrounded by good company. :-) birchy suggested just sitting for tight corners, but i guess if the terrain is very flat you could sit for faster wider corners too? but this is in a cross training context which usually means rough terrain.
