IFS for Therapists #4 Common Dynamics

  • Describing how parts engage with each other internally and naming the positive intent of the protective parts. Common protective strategies are identified with suggested interventions including how to discern the self-like part. The mechanisms whereby protectors inform our perception is discussed (how "parts hijack our eyes") and there is some discussion on working with shame that contrasts IFS curiousity with CBT reframing. The video closes with a beautiful story from Tara Brach's work, "The Good Fairy" which, from an IFS perspective, reports the intervention of a guide in session.The text for the reading “The Good Fairy” is here:

    Fair warning, reading 'the good fairy' is likely to leave you with tears in your eyes and a sore throat. Not just Derek, I just tried it and it happened to me too!

    Very helpful and Derek your protectors really moved back to let us see your emotions even though you were being filmed. That says a lot for the work you have done with your own system! Thanks so much.

    That reading is so powerful
    I feel that the words could have been my gatekeeper's
    I remembered asking God in prayer as a little kid to make it stop, instead I developed the power to forget, to send someone else so it wasn't me that had this terrible thing happening.

    The story broke me. 😓 It was my own 8yo voice crying out for help. I always knew there was a Fairy guiding me as a child, protecting me. Wrenching pain as I hear you read those words out loud..sure sign that it touched my wounded exiled child, and now she is found again. And now the healing begins.

    Whoah! I really connected with the list maker. That’s exactly how I always describe my trauma. There’s so much of it that I’m exhausted trying to explain it all the time. So I just treat it casually.

    I have been doing some of this work on my own and I am so glad I listened to this today. Last night I met the shame exile and also a minimising protector as well as a protector that blanks out. Could depression be a firefighting technique my protector is using? I am using my curiousity to press on. Thank you, thank you.

    • @IFSCA
      @IFSCA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Depression is complex and can certainly be a protective part. Stay curious, if it is a part then ask it how it is serving you; or what it belives might happen internally or externally if it did not do its job. I once worked with someone whose depressing protector informed her if it didn't do that then she would get clarity on how unsuitable her partner was and would have to leave him. Similarly parts with same-sex desire may be exiled because they often carry the burden of shame so the system becomes depressed. I addition if system is driven by productive managers, compelled to prove their worth and striving to ensure the part they are protecting - who may feel worthless - doesn't get triggered, depression can give the system a break. Depression is one of the few states where "I can't" is a legitimate response. Parts bringing migraine's may be similarly motivated. The golden rule? Just ask.
