  • I provide a framework and tools to assess how #web3 provides value and how to separate fact from fiction in the web3 space. Blockchains can be painful but beautiful - this means that sustainable opportunities where a web3 solution makes sense are nuanced.
Jan is an Associate Professor of Bioengineering at Stanford University and a Professor in Residence at StartX. For his Ph.D. work at Cambridge University, he used computers, information theory, and statistics, such as stochastic context free grammars, to find patterns in genomes. He was a physics professor at UC Berkeley until 2013, when he moved to Stanford.
In 2016, he worked with Joe Biden’s cancer moonshot initiative and a social network to help patients share sensitive medical data. Jan cofounded Enya in 2018 as a way to reframe how sensitive information flows through the internet and how data analytics can be better balanced with privacy.
Jan is a Sloan Research Fellow and a Searle Scholar. At Stanford, Jan focuses on privacy preserving digital health and he teaches a blockchain / distributed systems class. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

They’re only painful at the moment because the technology is so in its infancy. Just like every area of tech, it’ll speed up exponentially.
    Then it’ll just be beautiful!

I don't think the two use cases given are viable either. The trustlessness property only holds as long as everything that is done by any participant is done on-chain. As a company or nation, you can still use the blockchain to document your carbon emission reductions, but just lie about them. There is no reliable way to prevent people from colluding and entering bad data. In the charity example it is still possible that the charity organization colludes with the receivers of the funds and diverts the money once it is off chain.

Exactly this is where ORACLEs come into play. Chainlink, IXO (Cosmos) are such projects built on blockchain that bridge the realworld data into the blockchain world in a relatively more TRUSTLESS manner.

Trying to justify a system that doesn't need to exist is always a fun exercise.
The only use I still see with it is to perform transfers between countries more easily and without a third party involved.

One of the most important things for developed or developing countries is the possibility of voting in elections. In-person voting systems are important, but I would like to have a study endorsed about the possibility of Blockchain playing an important role in voting and whether it would be possible to maintain the confidentiality of the vote.

Virginia did this years ago! There's an article on Statescoop about it. They voted via blockchain

Why dont you try to fix the corruption rather than trying to bypass it with blockchain… corruption still existing and that is why blockchain is corrupted. Ps Bitcoin is horrible for the environment.

Imagine all the lies this guy told for an hour. I won't be using web3, I'm not a crypto fascist. I'm old enough to remember the world's most generous billionaire. I don't support human trafficking by crypto.
