- Let's be honest here, every spell in this game is absolute garbage, but this video will show the prettiest and most unique looking ones demonstrated on regular bosses. This is pretty much the Dark Souls 2 version of the video I made a few years ago on Dark Souls 3.

Useless is way too strong of a word. Some of the spells used in this video are god tier, heavenly thunder, forbidden sun, outcry, etc. DS2 has very few genuinely bad spells.

So true. Most of these spells are actually useful.
I think it's considered not as strong due to being only a few casts given or needing a lot of stat investment to really deal pain. Don't forget long cast times and periods of vulnerability. There's a reason why Soul Arrows and Lighting Spears are pretty much the meta caster spells in PvE at least.
I have the same issue with the video he did for this in DS3, it includes Black Flame (damn near instant guard-break in PvE and iirc both Deep Soul variants as well as Pestilent Mist. The Deep Soul spells are weak but cheap and spammable, so you can have like three or four Deep Souls active on top of whatever else you have up (like Affinity or a Black Serpent).
Also I consider it cheating to call spells like Combustion useless, those are designed for use in the early game and to be replaced by stronger variants later on (Great Combustion). They're designed to be replaced later on by stronger spells
It really makes it all the more tragic that the DS3 spells are so bland and less useful. They even had the templates for cooler, diverse spells and they opted for more soul spears and fireballs
I'll admit that these spells are lesser than the meta spells for PVE, but I must say that they allow you more control in PVP.
Yeah, those are useful in pvp, but in a non meta pvp or against gankers, in meta duels, those spells put you in a pretty bad disadvantage.
I use most of these spells in PvE and PvP - it's about play style and understanding how to utilize a spell to its fullest effect.
@@xXLunatikxXlul as I said, yeah, for specific situations (like ganks/invasions) or in some duels, using some kind of baits are pretty useful, but when you fight ppl who knows how's meta pvp works, they just wait you for cast the spell then QR out for spacing or just in for backstab you, the only viable spell due to his short cast against those ppl is great combustion thanks to his versatility.
I'm surprised that most ppl just played the pvp with the basics and never used some advance techs.
@@xXLunatikxXlul I mean, don't misunderstand, there's strong ppl who use only the basic mechanics, the're pretty interesting to fight imo, cause they can rekt you with only baits or just punishing mistakes, but in those cases they just know that using spells is a huge disadvantage against advanced techs.

Ray is that one parent whose kid is a honor student that is always at least top three in the class but still says they're useless because they got a 94 on a test.

I just beat Darklurker today on my second try using this spell. I never leave home without it now
in my personal experience, fire swathe is pretty good, especially against darklurker, expect you need to use in right time otherwise he'll sorta dodge it.
I find it interesting that in ds2, spells that might be considered useless are actually good (at least when I use them). Also interesting how Ray used spells that are worse versions of other spells like combustion, to me at least, that says that there aren't that many useless spells in ds2.

Yeah, the question of spells in DS2 isn't really "Are they effective?" but rather "How effective are they?". Especially with the DLC bosses, they resist a massive amount of spell damage, so last time I played through as a caster I wound up switching over to a melee build just because melee is way more effective when dealing with them. The damage you see in this video really doesn't reflect what the average caster is going to have access to in an average playthrough.
@@ManiManiPlays yeah, dlc bosses suck hard for casters, not too long ago I managed to kill Eleana with hexes and it was bad as you could expect

The rest of the dlc bosses can be dealt with normally using hexes

Soul Appease is surprisingly very useful. Not only is it used on hollows and rats, but it can also be used online against hollowed players
Thing is, if it’s online you can’t really use it against a Host, no? Because they’re human..
@@locallypwned5680 nah. In the little DS2 I've played (especially recently in the original on ps3) I've been invaded a few times while hollow. And in the dragon covenant I have been invading and invaded while hollow, also.

@@GamesDiddley actually yes it does matter because pwned seems to have thought that ds2 behaved on the same mechanics as ds1 did where players can't be invaded unless they're human which is what i and taylor have clarified. hollows in ds2 are still a lower priority invasion target than humans because that is how the game has been programmed. i don't care how the pvp meta operates because the pvp meta was never what was being questioned. i don't care if hollows get invaded more often because there are less players in general. that is not relevant to what anyone in the thread has said. the point is that hollows are able to be invaded. did you even read the thread?

These spells are far from useless. I don’t know why people think that but many of these are favorites of mine!
I agree! Dark Souls 2 has some of the most versatile and unique spells.
Here’s hoping elden ring has the same if not more variety in spells.

I think it's kinda like the fireball thing in DnD. like there's a TON of spells in that game and a majority of the time people treat fireball like it's the only good spell. even though you can do a lot of interesting stuff with other spells. fireball is technically the highest damage dealer for its level range so it's "the best"

I love the spell variety in ds2. Sure they aren't amazingly good, but I'd prefer 20 decent spells over 4 that's are just so good that you only use them. I like picking the perfect spell for the occasion

Most of these spells are op.
I feel like it's because there aren't that many bad spells in ds2. Only ones that I would say are objectively bad are immolation and some of the dlc spells.

@@lasershark0519 True, ds1 had a lot of just busted spells, ds2 had a lot of good or really good spells, and ds3 had some good ones and some utterly garbage ones. That's how I feel at least.
@@Never_at_All DS3 has some weird miracles and some weird sorceries. They made Pyromancy a bit less broken but you're right, like half are good and then there's like some decent ones and some meh ones.
@@Never_at_All I agree, although I’ll give credit to ds3 that it had the best pyros at least in my opinion.
Using heavenly thunder in the flexible Sentry room is pretty smart, the boss room is filled with water giving extra aoe damage, might also work for the demon of song.
Is that an actual thing in DS2 that water conducts electricity?
@@ngotemna8875 yeah, if any lightning strikes water it creates a small amount of splash damage, if you look at where the lightning from heavenly thunder lands during the flexible Sentry fight it creates a aoe effect. Also being wet from any source makes you take more lightning damage.
@@Crispierbug Damn I always thought I basically knew everything about this game except some out-of-bounds stuff or glitches.
For example the lowered lightning and increased fire resistance when being wet/drenched I knew about.
The water causes an electric AoE seems so obvious in hindsight, but I honestly never noticed that.

Another video of Ray calling any spell that isn’t outright broken useless. Hell, another one with Ray actually calling broken spells useless. If you watched the DS3 version of this video, you watched all of them.
Yep Non Meta = Trash I guess? Honestly, the thing I really liked about DS2 is that almost every spell is useful in some way (DS3 not so much, especially early game with low FP)

if nothing else, we should at least appreciate how much variety in spells there was in ds2
Soul Shower is one of my favorite spells in the game, if all the pellets hit it deals equal to or more than a Soul Spear great for huge bosses or very rewarding if you position correctly. Each pellet has super high stagger too, again great for bosses, you'll be staggering bosses you didn't know could be staggered if you land the whole spell multiple times. Also, since at least one pellet lands almost all the time in PvP it's great for combo-ing with other spells.
If you have the stone ring soul shower chews through poise easily
Soul greatsword and dark greatsword are my favorites spells in the game, I just love this kind of spell that let a mage go to melee
Lingering Flame is one of the best spells in DS2 for exactly the reason you displayed.
max stats with tumblebuffed catalyst on NG goes a looong way

Butchered light miracles, but otherwise magic (sorcery+pyromancy) is just fine.
Which... can be an issue after DS2, to merely have a "just fine" magic.

@@mustafaALiraqi-ou5kg Nah they added plenty of stuff that wasn't in DS1, from DS2 (like the flame buff, forbidden sun, crystal hail I guess ? Dark sword, dark and normal soulsword, etc), but also inspired by DS2 (like farron flashsword), or wholly new (like soulstream, the grey mist, blessed weapon, lightning stake and so on), not to mention changing how lightning works to make it more effective at short range which really feels great.
Actually dark is probably the category that has seen the most improvements compared to DS1 that haven't been lifted from DS2 or were straight derivations of DS1 or DS2, the deep miracles are almost all pretty good, and most of the dark sorceries are good as well, the only exception being deep soul.
Point being : DS3's magic is underrated, even if it's true that it's underwhelming compared to DS1 and that for no good reason some spells have suffered a drastic decrease in quality, like lightning spear

One thing I will say about the spells in DS2 is that they feel much more unique and creative than the spells in DS3. Maybe not as powerful or outright useful, but still very cool and tons of variety.
I always use Scraps of Life like it's going out of style. It knocks everything on it's ass and makes it way easier to get off stronger follow-up spells.
It certainly doesn't knock Forlorn on his ass. He just poises right through it like the cheater he is.

I always use it after a cast of Dark Fog against players. If they charge you then they most likely will get knocked. I actually really like the RNG aspect of the pillars
there aren't "bad" spells, just situational ones
Actually, almost every spell in Ds2 is pretty useful if you know how to use it. Of course there are exceptions, but the variety of cool and effective spells this game offers is noteworthy, and this video is a clear proof of that.
i have a question: there is any ofencive spell that can by use on the DLCs? (asking because everything there have hight magic resis)
Dlc is just for agony and pain for the wizard :'c

The only dlc I would say is rough for a caster would be eleum loyce. Shulva and brume tower are really good for a hexer aincw things are so weak to dark. Elana the squalid queen is weak to magic ironically. The fume knight is the only one that I can think of that any type of casting is worthless.
I test it long ago but I notice that even miracles whit full light/lightning buff make normal or bad damage, those places always give me heatdaches
@@ladymsoaps Without any new games, you can deal a fair bit of damage to Fume Knoght using hexes. Also crystal weapon is effective against him
I actually just beat him in my hex build but somewhat relied on a heide sword for the first half

I just realized that the boss death sound effect is identical to the Bazelgeuse roar in konster hunter world at the end of the sound effect

Life drain patch was excellent for farming those dragon fellas on the long walk leading to the Ancient Dragon. Just close door, walk into it to keep it from opening, and spam. Too bad killing 20 at once still doesn't drop a single dragon scale.
I'm guessing these are pretty useless pve wise. Allot of what you've shown are pretty good for pvp so I was curious why I saw such good spells be called trash

Sorcery/Pyromancer is balanced enough in ds2. If you want really reliable spells, hexes are king
Sorceries are fantastic and pyros have access to poison/toxin and hard hitting aoe spells.

By the amount of souls that he have I think it's pretty safe to say that he's at a level so high that pretty much everything is one shot
You know what is really sad? That the majority of this spells are better than those you find in DS3.
No spell ever recaptured the feeling of backhanding a Forbidden Sun up someone's nose
you start out with outcry but i always have outcry on for post backstab or parry in pvp. its just a free way to finish my opponent off
Most of these spells are great, if you know how to efficently use them and allocate stats correctly.

How is Forbidden Sun an useless spell?
It isn't.
It requires 3! attunment slots, gives you small amount of casts and the damage isn't worth it after all
Also you cannot farm it with ascetics, only ng+
In PC i had 150 casts of it
@@user-li2rd7uy8e man you don't know what you are talking about, forbidden sun has an insane casting speed and insane damage, about short usage you should know that mages have tons of equipment that increase the number of spell usages

If it isnt ds1 dark bead levels of death then it is weak.

Most of them are base game spells. Also, you can always burn bonfire ascetics for specific spells that are created from Boss Souls that are only dropped in NG+.
Oh and scorpion najka ng+ ring is a must for casters.

Dance of fire is my most hate/love spell, cause i feel like it's useless by it's own, but the way i use it is to hide forbidden sun, so basically dance of fire becomes a potentially dangerous decoy
Same way I mix heavy great soul arrow, heavy homing soul arrow and soul spear or flame snake and chaos storm, it’s always a guess game

oh no i think it was the blue aura around her, i forget what spell it was but iirc the name is focus magic. it halves your HP in exchange for heightened magic damage, so basically a dusk crown but as a spell

If you're on PC, you can use the spell swap glitch to get 300 forbidden suns.

I'm suprised by the power of souls spear barrage. When I fist played ds2 i had only played ds1 with mostly magic I was surprised by the lack of requirments for that souls spear barrage considering how powerful of a spell it is in all the games
