I remember riding this back when it first opened. It was unique from the pacing alone, with the fakeouts and main drop out front actually in the middle of the ride, rather than the climax. And the entire idea of a Pirates-of-the-Caribbean-esque dark ride turning into a roller coaster at the end was mind blowing. I think I loved the theming in the area more than anything (also why I loved Lost Continent at Islands of Adventure). I’m sad to see how poorly it’s aged.
I've always been obsessed with Atlantis, so this was amazing.. wish they would have kept up with it better, besides Jurassic Park it was the best water ride. ❤️

@Zachary Khan sad, but that happens when you make a supernatural horror ride , meaning the effects and i was gonna look foward to seeing those videos but no never gonna be a reality
@Zachary Khan it never got an update because maintenance and the company itself found it to be cheaper to shut off the effects rather than replacing them entirely. Seaworld invests a lot of their money into advertising and vacation packages rather than their own park.
@Zachary Khan no the money was definitely invested into the wrong things to get people to their parks but not give people the experience they expect when finally getting there like at Seaworld Orlando, that's why the Orlando location isn't doing so well, they've been experiencing budget cuts within their own parks to fund things like this and find ways to cut costs so that it can save the company money. Workers have been leaving due to the cuts, they've switched their CEO 3 times within the last year and a half.
I remember hearing it when we went a few years ago. I was really off put at that moment as I swore up and down that was what I heard. Good to know that I wasn't the only one.
My dad and I loved the Beetlejuice music. I was 8 when he pointed it out to me on my first ride. It was a sad day returning to the ride all these years later to see not only the beetlejuice music gone, but all that made the ride great. It's still super creepy to see the silhouette of the unlit siren statue looming over you during that first climb. Love the absolute hell out of this ride.
You seen that episode My favorite scene is that 8-bit scene and Sandy’s song that pays homage to games like dance dance revolution bust a move and a couple others I wish I could sing that song with sandy
It will be a shame when this ride eventually closes. Honestly I think they should have someone to either rewrite the story, along with fixing the special effects, or do an overhaul and introduce new effects with a completely different story. I've grew up with this ride everytime I went to SeaWorld, I loved it and was drawn to the scary tone as a kid (Coming from someone that went to and loved the Alien Encounter at Magic Kingdom when I was about 5 or 6). It's a shame that they killed what I enjoyed about it, other than the rollercoaster parts. And soon, it will be sunk back to the ocean since Journey to Atlantis is not on SeaWorld's priority list as they expand on adding other attractions to Orlando and all other parks owned by the company. No matter what may become of Atlantis, it will hold a special place within me like a few other rides from other theme parks.
I have never ridden Journey to Atlanta but assume it is pretty similiar to Poseidon at Europa Park which was built one or two years later. I have always enjoyed Poseidon but it has become pretty rough in recent years. Anyway, the theming of Journey to Atlantis is really impressive and I think it is a shame if companies shut down special effects and neglect such costly attractions. That is what I like about Europa Park, they do not shut down attractions or neglect them, the owners of the Park do quite the opposite by adding new elements to their old rides and thus keeping them relevant years after their construction. Something I hope Sea World will also do with Journey to Atlantis.
Yeah.. I hope they will do a major refurb instead of closing it. I remember going down the first time and as a kid thinking Sea World would just be boring but this was my favorite.
I feel like i was the only one who had a deep appreciation for the story. When I rode this ride as a kid i was amazed by the story and special effects more than the thrill (im a thrill seeker btw), it helped set it apart from other rides. Sad to see one of my favorite rides of all time sink
I agree. Such a shame they butchered this ride. Was planning on going to SeaWorld next time i visit from the UK but with hearing about how they have ruined my favourite ride their I think I'll just save the money for Universal. *Sad*
All of the dark ride sections are now absolutely dreadful and tacky looking with barely any of the effects ever working and a sight of any storyline is completely lost
I got to ride it when they had the weak story and Beetlejuice music. Although confusing it was still entertaining, the latest version was horrible. It was my niece’s first coaster and the entire time she kept asking what’s happening.. I agreed with her.
I worked at Journey for years before they took out the theming. Beetlejuice permanently embedded into my brain. Thanks for the great video, it brought back good memories.

It was not Medusa. This was separate entity, a siren named Allura, one of the two antagonists, the other being Colonel Steele, who is in my film screenplay adaptation, if you're interested.
It's sad to see Atlantis in the state it's in...a shell of it's former self indeed. But it's a nice little ride to cool off on and enjoy a temp thrill regardless, so it's not bad. Just lackluster compared to what it once was. ...also that Vinny ending. I loved that movie XD Perfect ending
I want Journey to Atlantis to be fixed up for both its 25th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of SeaWorld Orlando in 2023 with a new coat of paint, new and fixed up special effects, and a fixed-up story!
This is, by far, my favorite ride at the park... Well... It was until they changed it. I loved the original version and while the story telling wasn't great, it was about what you'd expect from a roller coaster. The best part was when the siren says "Leaving so soon?" and you realize that the ride isn't over yet. As far as coasters go, I only rank Universal's Mummy ride better. Sure, there are better "thrill" coasters, but none that play with your head the way Journey to Atlantis did. So sad to see it in it's current state.
Speaking of story, I appreciate your praise, as the story is what I seeked to adapt into a film screenplay, elements of Atlantis 2001, Allura the Siren and all.
Sad to hear they went cheap and lame and ruined this pretty awesome ride, it's a shame anytime a park does this, it show a lack of caring about giving their guests the best experience possible.
Typical history that a theme park attraction loses all the fun stuff over the years. That's why it's important to visit when it first opens. You should do Haunted Mansion for the 50th anniversary!
I still enjoy this ride! Regardless of the story which I never paid attention to, I feel this ride is perfect for a hot summer day in Orlando. No matter when I ride, where I sit, or how full the boat is, I get soaked. This ride is truly a forgotten gem amongst the newer Orlando attractions.
Yeah, the one in San Diego is cool with the weird elevator thing but when I went it was complete darkness, apparently they haven't given maintenance to the ride in years.
I use to love this ride, now it's a major disappointment when they shut the effects off. It needs a major update. I mean they took Kraken and tried to connect it to the ride with the VR, but the ride itself needs a major overhaul.

I know its not a theme park or theme park attraction but I'd love to see you do a video on Orlando International Airport. Not only is it massively important to the theme parks, it has a very deep connection to them and a really interesting history that most people don't know. Just a thought, love your channel and keep up the good work!
A perfect video for National Roller Coaster Day since the ride is a combination of a water ride, a roller coaster, and a dark ride! Thanks for uploading it on National Roller Coaster Day since it’s a water roller coaster!
You know what, after seeing this one I would love to see you guys do a video on Poseidon's Fury over at Islands of Adventure! God I miss the original story to that show.
I know that this is an old comment, but just wanted to say that you're not the only one who misses the original Poseidon's Fury! Sadly, we'll now have to miss the show altogether as it's passed into theme park history for good.
I was hoping this would include some more in-depth exploration of the San Diego version-it DOES have theming! They’ve let the speakers for the narration deteriorate over time, but as a kid I remember them being crystal clear and the story captivating.

It's too bad they toned it down so much... Also--if have the chance to ride it at night it feels like a whole other ride. And if you're the last boat you sometimes get a lights on journey.

Really happy that you mentioned the random Beetlejuice theme that played on the ride, lmao. I was so confused when I heard that music back when I was a kid riding this, I was literally looking around to see if Beetlejuice himself was gonna pop up. To my dismay, he never did.
Yes! God I love this ride so much! I got some mixed feelings on Sea World (ethically atleast) but Journey to Atlantis is by far my FAVOURITE Water Ride simply because it combines the charm of a ‘log flume drop’ Ride that pretty much every theme park has. The original and intriguing theming, the Dark Ride Elements And ofcourse the genuine thrills of the ride!
Love your videos!! Your style and depth of research are what inspired me to start my own TH-cam channel! Thank you and please keep these videos coming!
Allure gets mad at Hermès because he redirects the water stream into her house, breaking her front door (which you can see next to the fountain) with an umbrella. That’s why she says “now you’ve done it you puny little pony, your friends are mine!” Also, Hermès was originally planned to have a script and a voice, there used to be a news van in the queue and the employees were “reporters”, and the original scene by the final drop was different :)
i am so glad i got to experience this when i was young when it was actually full of life.. it seems so dull now and has lost its magic .. such a shame.
I remember I rode this on my only trip to SeaWorld. As much as I don't want to support a park that keeps these types of sea animals in captivity since that trip, I do admit that this ride was the best part of the park.
Mission Bermuda Triangle has a great story at SeaWorld. It was the first major ride at any of their parks, and helped them become more ride oriented. You should certainly cover it!
I remember riding this back when it first opened. It was unique from the pacing alone, with the fakeouts and main drop out front actually in the middle of the ride, rather than the climax. All rides end at the gift shop lol
The Aliens from the Simpsons were correct lol.
Wes B Not all rides tend to end at the gift shop, some rides end without a gift shop or have a nearby gift shop with a similar theme!
Floridans joke that there’s a law that all rides end in a gift shop
😂 True 👍
Can y’all do manta next?! I was part of the opening team for that attraction!
This was the first roller coaster I ever went on, and scarred me, I was crying so much lol
Same it was the first coaster I rode on in SeaWorld I went on it and it was sooo fun. I’m still kinda nervous to do Kraken or Manta or Mako though lol
One of the best rides there
It was, but with the story removed, I would say it's more of a time killer than a must do attraction.
Wow. I never really knew the story of this ride. Thsnk you
Thank you so much for making this!! It was such a neat ride!
Really love this channel keep up the good work
Thank you Samuel!
I haven’t seen you in awhile! I’m glad to see my favorite theme park TH-camr back!
The first time I ever rode this ride when I was little I was crying cause of the drop but now I like it
Love this channel. Also could you do the history of Curse Of Darkastle in a future video please?
I've been waiting for this one for so long! Honestly one of favourite water rides of all time easy top3
I just took my niece on this ride, we loved it!
Can you add to your list
Castle Dracula at Universal I'm not sure which one but It lasted from 1980 to 1983
And Phantom Theater from Kings Island
I love these videos. I’d love to see the history of Soarin’ over California
They should make a ride based on the movie it’s an underrated classic
I love your videos they’re narrated perfect and you do a great job explaining the history.
Love your videos!! Your style and depth of research are what inspired me to start my own TH-cam channel! Thank you and please keep these videos coming!
Allure gets mad at Hermès because he redirects the water stream into her house, breaking her front door (which you can see next to the fountain) with an umbrella. That’s why she says “now you’ve done it you puny little pony, your friends are mine!”
Also, Hermès was originally planned to have a script and a voice, there used to be a news van in the queue and the employees were “reporters”, and the original scene by the final drop was different :)
Next could you please do the Kraken Unleased coaster it had a lot of history
Sure does, it used to have VR headsets on the coasters before being removed after a year of using them.
I’ve got the credit. I honestly like the new music a lot and the new theme. Love the ride
i am so glad i got to experience this when i was young when it was actually full of life.. it seems so dull now and has lost its magic .. such a shame.
I remember I rode this on my only trip to SeaWorld. As much as I don't want to support a park that keeps these types of sea animals in captivity since that trip, I do admit that this ride was the best part of the park.
This was such a unique ride.
The San Diego one was cool though with the elevator.
I have such a vicseral memory of riding this ride when I was 7 (I'm 25 now.) It was so memorable, and I'm sad to see it be in this state.
Man, I rember being at SeaWorld when this was about to be unveiled. It only took me another 10 years to go back and ride it.
This was my childhood right here
This ride traumatized me as a kid straight up sobbing.
Another awesome video! Keep it up!
Great video as always
Can u please do a video on the rides of Waterworld in Denver
I was there 3 weeks ago ..... amazing vacation.
My favorite part of this video : "And the theme from Beetlejuice plays". If only it had an original score ):
What a lovely ride, wish id gone to sea world!
Mission Bermuda Triangle has a great story at SeaWorld. It was the first major ride at any of their parks, and helped them become more ride oriented. You should certainly cover it!
Thank you so much🙏🏻
I rode Journey To Atlantis in 2008 when I was 4 years old!
