  • The ET Adventure is a dark ride featured at Universal Studios Florida, and formerly, Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Japan theme parks. The ride is based on the movie ET: the Extra-Terrestrial. As the only opening day attraction remaining at Universal Studios Florida, guests take a bike and help ET get home to save his dying planet. In this video, we take a look at the history of the attraction, Steven Spielberg’s relationship with Universal Theme Parks, the closure of the Hollywood and Japanese version, and the future of the Florida attraction.

    This ride definately needs to be kept. Redo the figures. Make them fresh and looking alive not like dummies. Love this ride.

      I'm hoping for some type of refurbishment for the 30th anniversary of the attraction, not much has to been done to the ride it's (animatronic upgrades, new special effects) I just hope they don't add anything like screens, that would ruin the experience.

      *YOU READ MY MIND . I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THEY'RE NOT RENOVATING AND UPGRADING THE E.T. RIDE . THEY'VE GOT PLENTY OF CASH TO DO SO IF THEY REALLY WANTED TO . THE E.T. RIDE SHOULD BE RENOVATED EVERY TWO YEARS JUST LIKE THE HAUNTED MANSION RIDE . THE HAUNTED MANSION RIDE LOOKS MAGNIFICENT AND IT'S ACTUALLY BEEN AROUND SINCE 1969 !!!*

      I actually would rather see it stay as is, the crowds it get prob doesn't justify a revamp, but, for me that adds to the charm of it. We grew up with this movie, it's a classic 80s flick, so let it keep the charm of its age. I love the animotronica, especially the cop with the 80s style Ronnie who pops out with the police car 👮🚨😂

    I love how Speilberg fought for the Florida ride. 10/10, my dude. If i were him, though, I'd put up some money and get some sponsors to give the E.T. ride a technology update and some new paint. I have such fond memories of it but the ride hasn't aged to greatly if you look past the nostalgia of it.

    As much as I love the nostalgia of this ride, my mom did say they could easily change this ride to become Stranger Things, which would also be cool. The bikes, forest setting, and overall 80s vibe would work perfectly for it.

      That has been a rumor for a while now but I don't know if it's speculation or a fact. I can tell you this Natalie, if the Stranger Things house ends up being huge at Halloween Horror Nights (which it will 99.9% will), I won't be surprised if Universal starts to consider replacing ET with it.

    I really enjoy this channel because I get to see so many wondrous Disney attractions I wouldn't otherwise get to see. When a ride get removed it feels so sad. It's like the memories we have are being toyed with too. At the end of the day, it's a business which has to make a profit from the peoples memories. Keep up the excellent videos and information you share.

  • @snarkus63
    @snarkus63 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Why should it close? Disneyland has open attractions that pre-date the 70's. But there's nothing wrong with the idea of the E.T. ride shutting down to get a technological upgrade.

    • @ThemeParkHistory
      @ThemeParkHistory  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think most fans are just worried with the track record Universal has had recently where it's all about how they can bring in more guests and drive up attendance levels. Even if the ride were to get a tech upgrade, I can imagine the outrage there would be if they replaced all the animatronics with just 3D and screens.

    • @thisismysea

      Disney's old rides feature characters that have a lot more pop culture relevance than ET. Little kids know who Snow White is, but not ET. Doesn't hurt that the Disney rides mostly feature timeless fairytale characters who exist beyond their movies anyway. Not saying this ride should close or anything, but it's a pretty different situation than the dark rides at Disneyland.

    I’ve only been to Universal and on E.T. twice, once this past fall and once probably a decade ago at least. It’s such a delightful ride, and when you talked about the smell I immediately knew exactly what you were talking about.
    But I mostly wanted to share how the ride operators this fall gave me one of the biggest memories I have of the park (outside of the Wizarding World section, which to be fair, was something I waited to see for years, so it’s hard to compete with that anticipation). That day I happened to wear a NASA shirt, and also completely forgot that they were Literally The Bad Guys in the movie. Imagine my social anxiety and my family’s laughter when the ride operators started screaming ”NASA SPY” and telling the rest of the people in our vehicle to watch out for me! It’s funny in hindsight, but in the moment it took me a few moments to process what they meant. I now love E.T. (In general, not just the ride) more because of this experience. Even though I was in the moment not knowing how to react. (I just like Pluto a lot and cry over spacecraft, don’t call me out like this!!!)
    So, lesson learned, if you don’t want to have people shouting that you’re trying to steal a beloved movie icon, don’t wear a NASA shirt to Universal. Or at least wear a jacket in E.T. 😂
    And if you do? Well, NASA shirts are pretty trendy now, so go for it and have fun! Just don’t hurt the little alien. He’s a good boy.

    I love E.T so much. I’ve watched it since I was a little girl. I was scared of him but I always wanted to watched it. It’s my favorite movie and always will be.
    I love all of Steven Spielberg’s movies. I love Jurassic park, E.T, Jaws and more. But kinda basic but they’re all my favorite.
    Steven Spielberg is my favorite. I want to be a Director when I graduate and I’ve helped direct videos in my classes at school and I’ve acted in them too. I don’t think I’m the best but I hope someday I can make movies and write books.

    Watching this the day after riding it with my boyfriend of 1 year: this being his first and mine being my third/fourth time. I have always loved the joy this ride brings me. It fills me with childlike wonder every time I ride it. No other ride in the park makes me feel that way. My boyfriend wanted to do it again and again and again. I hope this attraction stays as long as it can. You can always renovate the dummies and some of the movement, but one thing you can’t replace is that nostalgia and joy. Plus that 80’s smell in there, lol.

    I got trapped on the Orlando version! Right in the middle of the end scene on the ET planet with that terrible song repeating over and over again. We had to stay on extra long as a family because the emergency escape stairs (on your right in that scene) where made to blend in and so where not built to the standard need for, say, my grandmother to walk out. They don’t even have handrails!

I'm a native Floridian and was lucky enough thanks to my parents to go to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure throughout my childhood and growing up. I Love the E.T ride from the atmosphere, the animatronics, to of course even its own unique smell. Iv'e seen all the OG rides like Jaws, Back to the Future, and King Kong go down and am gonna b so sad the day this classic has its final journey. I just drove up to the parks for a vacation with my girlfriend for our 1 Year Anniversary and her Birthday and it was so awesome getting to experience all the rides again including E.T who was still there!! :D I can't wait for HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHTS now in a couple of weeks!!! >:)

I'm pretty certain this was the only ride that was open or at least operable at that time. we did the spaceship.. either due to my fear of the ride or that the bikes had malfunctioned. I remember this being a very temperamental ride in the early years. I love it still. And hope it never goes away. Sure it's dated in a way... but do you really think our parents were blown away in the 90s by it, no... it's Because we were kids that it seemed so magical and it is now that to my kids.

    I hope they update the E.T. ride by making the animatronic characters and special effects look more realistic and not look fake. The ride will be 30 years old in 2020 and I hope Universal updates the attraction or do something special for its 30th anniversary. It should be something special for fans who grew up and had wonderful memories with this attraction.

    • @ThemeParkHistory
      @ThemeParkHistory  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My concern if Universal updates it for 30th anniversary it will be with screens and all that other crap nobody wants to see. Or even worst: "After 30 years at Universal Studios Florida, it's time for ET to go home for good! Come visit ET one more time before it's too late!" That would piss me off so much.
      Here's hoping it's something really special and worthy of one of the best rides Universal has ever created.

    I read there were plans for an E.T. ride for Universal Studios Singapore, but it was rethemed into a Sesame Street ride at the last minute. I do wish that version could someday be used to bring E.T. back in Hollywood. That park is sorely lacking more Disney-style dark rides, which are my thing, and there exists an E.T. parking structure but no E.T. ride, which gave me an off-putting feeling (considering there also exists a Jurassic Park parking structure).

    • @ThemeParkHistory
      @ThemeParkHistory  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Universal needs to stop relying so heavily on 3D screen motion based simulators. I get that it's cheaper to create and makes it a easy to way to have a copy of it in every park but you're right, there's definitely a lack of great dark rides at Universal parks at the moment.

  • @Buc_Stops_Here

    This ride is hidden away in the back of the park. When I took my kids to this ride last year we were virtually the only ones on it. I have a feeling that ET will be going away soon in Florida (even Terminator, one of the other older rides had a line - this did not). If Mario world comes to pass its days are numbered (I have never been on a ride that empty ever before!)

    Before Universal opened July 1964, before Disney opened July 1955 there was Charlie Wood's STORYTOWN U.S.A., in Lake George, NY (May 1954).
    This is claimed to be the original Theme Based Amusement Park. Though there had been decades of Trolly Parks, STORYTOWN U.S.A. was based solely on the theme of children's fairy tales and Mother Goose nursery rhymes.
    With Mother Goose in residence daily. Often played by Mrs. Charles (Margaret) Wood.
    In it's history the park saw numerous advancement to include an Old West Village and a Circus venue, & briefly JUNGLE LAND (which was closed cause it scared the kids). The owner Wood also open a second park along the Lake George shore line GASLIGHT VILLAGE where visitors would walk through a boulevard from the 1890's. Though GASLIGHT VILLAGE was enjoyable for teens and adults it never had the impact of STORYTOWN, GHOSTTOWN, or CIRCUS PARK.
    Prior to Wood's passing he refocused his interested to the DOUBLE H HOLE IN THE WALL Camp for Disabled Children (with his friend, actor, Paul Newman).
    Not finding a family member or local business interest he ultimately sold STORYTOWN and it's Park neighbors to SIX FLAGS GREAT ESCAPE (sometime in 1983). Who run the expanded Park and adjacent Indoor Water Park to this day.
    According to Beth Robertson, former vice president of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, Wood's was one of the first to develop the “idea of theming a park based on an idea and a character” when he opened Storytown U.S.A. in 1954 in Queensbury, N.Y., a year before Disneyland. “Charley Wood is considered the grandfather of the American theme park,” Ms. Robertson said.
    HERE IS LIVING THEME PARK HISTORY that deserves a video.

    The thing Universal did other places didn't is made rides focusing on movie magic, you know? Backdraft, ET, JP, the Trams, they focus on the idea of putting you into a set almost. Things where REAL. They seem to now focus on CGI more today.

    One thing that I believe contributed to the ride closing is that it was often broken down for no apparent reason and remaining out of commission for long periods of time. Even people who wanted to go on the ride got discouraged with the ride being down so much. I was at the park myself three times, for a week's vacation over a period of about 6 years. Every single time I went, the ET ride was broken down. Twice, it was closed after I, and many others, had been waiting in line for 2 hours. How often do you think people will put up wit that before they start just assuming that the ride is not working and stop showing up for it?

      Now that Disney has all the Fox IPs too lots of possibilities for attractions. My own dream would be to see a legit "Alien" based attraction. Not Extraterrorestrial Encounter but like a real, well thought out immersive experience and if they could not get Ridley Scott for that one sure Spielberg could do it justice.

    I was always sad as a kid when I got off the ride. It could never say my name! It's "Arnold" should be super simple. But ET would always mess it up for some reason but get everyone else in my family. I don't think "Arnold" is that hard or even rare of a name.
