How to De Rust, clean, and coat (optional) a gas tank

- I am rebuilding a vintage puch moped and the gas tank was really gross and rusty. I used evaporust to clean it up and redkote to seal it. I did not need to use redkote, but I really love it.

Short, concise and informative. I wish all videos on youtube would follow this formula.
Thank you!
would love to see a horn bypass video or how to troubleshoot the horn. love the videos!
Why do you want to bypass the horn?
@@Corn-ped because its always on when moped is running and i can yell louder then it lol im planning on hardwiring my puch just scared to send it (yes i know its pretty simple) and i been watching your video "12v upgrade and complete wiring puch magnum rebuild pt 5" for inspiration. ive got a 77 puch maxi sport with a bosh 6 wire magneto, seems easy. just ground a lot of things and good to go, i want just a running headlight/tail light and a kill switch
@@HolyKaii Ususally its a short in the switch. You could replace the switch to test it. or open it up and see if there is a contact that is bent. Usually its a thin piece of metal that looses its spring. You can also just connect the horn wires and not have a horn and yell.
I've used red kote once, it worked great!
did you do much prep?
I love evaporust and redkote too. The only thing I'd do differently is to degrease the tank before using evaporust. Since the evaporust is water based it can't get past oily sludge, and that can be a problem for any coating. The diesel probably did a good job with that? I'm not sure I haven't used it as a cleaner.
I also thin the redkote with acetone to make it flow better; the redkote instructions say you can go up to 20% acetone by volume.
And yeah, the ability to dissolve the redkote coating with MEK if something DOES go wrong is great!
Degreasing is a good tip! I also thought it was thinner then it was haha.
@@Corn-ped it's thicccccc
@@bjf10 haha yes. I thinned it when I put the can away.
Diesel works great as a cleaner and can be used again or used after to start 🔥 yaaaa
Diesel or petrol to clean the tank? And can we not coat it and leave it at that, if the tank is always full of petrol?
Yeah you could stop after the evaporust and throw gas in there. This one did not need to be coated.
How do you keep the petcock hole from plugging up with the coating?
I usually blow a little air thru the petcock area after half an hour or so just to make sure it clear.
@Corn-ped makes sense. The tank I'm working on is from an old Honda ATC which has a remote petcock. I'm thinking of running some small diameter hose up through the fuel line nipples. Find as close an OD hose that fits the ID of the nipples. And pull them out after the coating starts to set, but before it cures.
@dpronto81 that would totally work. I've done it where I used the old petcock and left it in there and then pull that out
A bit pricey but i really like evaporust
I use to think it was pricey.but it's reusable.
True that I've used vinegar it's it's ok price haven't ever tried muriatic I'm afraid I'd screw it up somehow and burn a hole in the tank.
I've been using the same gallon of evapo-rust for over 5 years and tons of rusty stuff.
Same here I think I read about it on moped army and had to get some I like it
Do you have any idea why my puch maxi would be dying when I come to a stop?
Could be an air leak? Or your clutch could be grabbing.
@@Corn-ped thanks. I’ll check a few things a let you know. ✌️
@@Corn-ped so it WAS an air leak I guess bc my pipe gasket was shot. And the nuts were probably loose. Not dying when I stop now w the new gasket.
@@Corn-ped thanks 🤙🏻
