I worked in a fibreglass factory years ago and depending on the temperature you adjusted the amount of hardner or it might never go off or go off too quickly. Let's hope it does the job. We had to be very exact with the hardner. We made bus panels and even wings for rally cars.
Yes Terry, its hardened off now.
@@retrorestore just saying, we were supposed to be doing it for a living and even we had mistakes but we had gallons of the stuff and a new batch could be made immediately. We also did a small mix every time as a tester.
Nice souvenir of youth transport when the roads where not so busy , could never catch up to a scruffy looking Garelli Tiger Cross with my purple Fs1e .
Got a brown/red coloured p reg yam fs1e and a BSA tracker 125 i think in my loft left in bits by previous owner years ago.Nice little job for my son if he ever gets off his xbox.
I'd love to restore the Fs1e Dave
Good video Martin, when I did my bike tank I put it in a black bin bag and taped it up so I only had the filler cap showing and plugs in the petrol tap holes . I was a bit paranoid about getting the sealer on the paintwork, I know it’s a bit late but I hope it helps someone
Out All the best.
Thanks Nick, I did get a bit on the tank but got it straight off with nail varnish remover.
That restoration of the tank is amazing from what is was. It's a paint job to die for..... It should seal and harden in time though. It can take longer than what they say on the tin.
Yes, Chris, it has hardened now and is solid.
Sometimes you could really think that only happens to you. But, believe me, you are not alone with things that are not going as they should.
I feel for you!
Nevertheless, a big thank you for the video!
Cheers Bernd
Its set hard now Bernd
That's the stuff, i have a couple of tanks done at least 10yrs ago still good as new. It will go off i left mine without even checking for the week.
Thanks, yes Its set now.
nice one thanks mate im going to do mine tomorrow when tank has dried out, got the gear yesterday and same as yours TINY BIT OF HARDNER dont think il even bother with the test as just uses it up and eventually will harden anyway, cheers
Lol mine was an R reg with the red tank, went like stink and was my first proper bike until some dozy cow coming out of Grove Park station decided it was fun to just drive out without looking or indication and next thing I knew I was sailing 30 feet in the air and me poor bike following me and she got right cross and tried to get me nicked cos I swore at her quite a bit with me leg looking like a mangled Z and me poor bike looking ten times worse, what did she expect me to do? Shake her hand? Sadly poor FSE was bent badly in the frame and wheels and the nasty cow gave the old bill a dodgy name cos I never got a pay out either. When me leg healed and me mum stopped doing her crunch at me, I opted for the princely sum of £150 a R reg, banana yellow Vespa Primavera 125 with the full blown stage 2 Taffspeed 135cc engine, Polini banana racing exhaust and a very swanky reed valve that this rig nearly killed me as soon as I kicked her into life, seriously lethal bit o' kit that went from 0 to skid marks and don't forget the cycle clips with me getting clocked doing 90 by one old bill and his gun. Of course legshields mean't no more crunchy bones moments which was the only way me mum was letting me back on two wheels hehe
Good memories Ian. I was knocked off mine too at a zebra crossing when a Mini rammed into the back of me and I ended on the bonnet with my helmet smashing his windscreen. Police saw everything and nicked him. I got an RD250 after that lol
@@retrorestore Yes , memories. I had an AP 50 . great bike.
Top job on the tank Martin:)
Thanks Harry.
Good video, well presented.
Coating the middle of the tank probably isn't as important as the lower parts.
In my experience, water (condensation) settles near the tap.
used a similar Martin A few years back, I thought it wouldn't set but I checked after 24 hours and all was good... tank is looking nice though mate.. atb Steve
Yes Steve, it has hardened now.
They are beautiful bikes to ride and very quick
Have u got a email address as I have some questions to ask u about a engine that I am working on and stuck for answers
retrorestoreuk@gmail.com
Hopefully after a few days it will eventually go off stick it in the airing cupboard if you got one or Infront of the infra red heater down the workshop. And I assure you mate your not alone I always get bloody hassle 😉
Wouldn't it have been safer to do this before painting? I would have made a mess out of the tank I'm afraid.
Maybe George but you know how things are lol
Thank You My Friend! I'll Reply to You Soon! And I Bid U a Goodnight AF!🌃x
Nice job 😀😀
Great vid Martin 👍
Nice job mate
Its set now Leon lol
@@retrorestore lol that's good to hear mate did you find out about the hardener did you get enough or not
I only done this tonight Leon so I don't know.
Hope it sets for you Martin. Maybe if you put it over a radiator might help to warm it up and cause the hardner to work
Jack
Its set now Jack.
I used Petseal and because I was still restoring the bike the tank was left for a good two months before putting fuel in,after about two weeks the bike wouldn't start the throttle went really stiff so stripped the carbs and the Petseal was all over it must have reacted with the fuel!
Maybe I did something wrong I did the same as you so I don't know but I won't be using it again, hopefully yours will be ok.
After you coat the inside you should drain out excess
Nice job
Oh dear! Petseal! It takes a while to go off and is OK at first but .......... After 2 or 3 years needs doing again because of the increased ethanol in petrol that now eats into it and degrades it. I had to re-do my GPZ RX1000 tank every 3 years and change the fuel line filters monthly. It's not a bad product, but all tank sealers have issues with ethanol degrading them.
I see, its gone hard now but took longer than they said.
Might be a daft idea but just a thought ...how about putting it in the oven on a low heat for an hour or so.
Its set now John.
Sorry I am late keep up the great work you do great job keep it up
Cool worker boy 🤘👍👍😄
Not been weather for welding Burt nice to see u put a video on enjoyed it as always u putting any food videos on if u got a omlat maker might be a good video as u got all gadgets lol
Hope to be on the Transit maybe tomorrow Andrew. No food vids planned though.
Sounds like you used polyester resin with MEKP (Methyl Ethel Keytone Peroxide) hardener. It doesn't take very much MEKP to harden polyester resin. But I had a batch that took a long time to cure one time. So hang in there. The MEKP or the poly itself could have been old. There is a self life on both those chemicals. But I think yours will harden in time. I have used around 22 gallons of that stuff over a few years. JMHO
Yes Gary, it has gone hard now after a couple of hours.
Sounds like my old willie. Sorry, couldn't resist....
If the stuff left in the cup hardens then it should in the tank too. To mix the fibres I would have just shaken the bottle vigorously rather than use the stick. Also I think the wooden stirrer you used in the hardener would have soaked up a lot of the liquid and wasted it there. Good luck.
They say in their instructions to use a wooden stick bud.
ok...forget what I said then...lol.
When I did one the instructions said coat the inside then once it's coated let the EXCESS drain out then it will hardern
But the small amount in the cup din't harden either but its now fine with the hair drier. Shouldn't have taken that long though.
I'm just about to use this product on my 1979 Yamaha YZ80 tank I hope it goes well Martin can you please tell me where you got the tank decal from? Thanks Sam.
There's a company on Ebay that does them. They are expensive but good.
Did you do a conclusion to this? I have just bought some and the catalyst bottle also has a very tiny amount.
The conclusion is that the tank is a display item and I still have it bud.
@@retrorestore I meant did it set satisfactorily and has it had fuel in?
@@andywaters3849 it set rock hard but I've not had fuel in it
I don't know of anyone who takes care of a motorcycle's fuel system for storage except mechanics and crazy people. It's a rare breed that drains the fuel, cleans the carburetor and fills the tank with used motor oil for long-term storage, then coats everything else with grease. I mean, who wants a rust-free bike 30 years later?
Hi. I had exactly the same issue. I even used 1 8th less resin. What a mess. How do you get yours sorted in the end please?
It hardened solid after the hair drier.
@@retrorestore thanks for response. Left in tank cupboard all night at 25 deg c went hard in the end. They Could definitely do with providing better information though. That stuff is messy, and got onto the outside of the tank when inverting and into tankcap when bag broke. Nail varnish remover takss it off when wet but also removes paint lacquer 😒
just your luck martin lol great video though.
its set now Dave.
must have just not been enough hardner like you said martin. at least its ok now.
that paint job looks pukka !
Another interesting video, as always.
Martin, that light you used on the tripod @12:05. Can you you tell me where you got it from? Just what I need. Cheers
I got it from Ebay a long time ago.
Not just you things keep happening to me too, I changed my drum brakes the shoes as soon as they get hot after about 12 miles one side rubs, backed off the self adjuster over time they adjust themselves again I can't find the problem only does it after about 12 miles when it gets warm wished you live near me as finding someone honest is very hard these days take care Ian
You didn't by chance put the adjusters on the wrong side did you?
Maybe the drums aren't circular...or warped..?
Hope you get it sorted Ian.
@@durangodave6083 no different threads and worked before I did brake shoe s
@@roymichaeldeanable working before new shoes
You can only do what it says in the instructions Martin.
exactly Dave
Was there a seal on the little bottle of hardener? Maybe the stuff evaporated away, great video👍
No there wasn't
Hi mate just wondering how it us now long term review, is everything still ok im about to do mine ? Thanks
This tank was for display purposes only so I don't really know, sorry.
that could of got interesting if took even longer start set :-S
Had similar with differing batches of epoxy, some setting in 10 minutes others closer to 45 minutes.
quite a difference from your expected 5 minute working time, in some ways might end up better job as doubt had such good coverage over middle raised part .
How well do transfers and the lacquer last when done like that, do you see much issues of cracking or lifting .
Its all set up now and is fine. the transfers seal great and not had any issues if they are applied properly and dried with a heat source as in my video.
that nice to know as looks nice laid under the clear coat .
Just wondering which light you are using...do you have a name of manufacturer...Thankyou. ...x
Can't remember Roy.
I'm sorry to say Martin, but it is extremely likely you will have to start again. Additional heat won't play a part in setting the mix, as I'm sure you know with body filler. The heat is purely from a chemical reaction, if the chemicals are not in the correct ratio the heat is not produced, therefore the final product is not made. You can be sure the hardener quantity was insufficient. Even if you get to the point that it seems set, I'm sure petrol will destroy it relatively quickly.
Its set rock hard now Dan.
Hi did it do the job eventually? Ive just ordered some to do an old TS250 tank, thanks
Yes, it want solid the next day.
Buying this tomorrow from eBay. Skeptical it will work looking at your video. Is it any good for sealing in rust and leaking pin holes in your tank?
It worked fine in the end bud once it cured.
OK thanks mate attempting it tonight.
Keep It Up AF!👍x
Whats the point of sealing? I'm doing something similar but im removing rust with vinegar.
You can never totally remove all rust and it also seals any tiny pinholes that might appear in an old tank. That's why you seal bud.
@@retrorestore would vinegar or something else be a good pre treatment?
Or would that be a waste of time?
I have a leak from the overflow.
Also what about the petrol tap pipe etc.?
Hi Martin! How did the tank turn out, did it harden off ok??
Yes it did bud.
@@retrorestore would you recommend it?
@@subliutenant I can't really say as I still have the tank as a display piece but its had no fuel in it.
@@retrorestore I have a 1974 CD175 I'm restoring. I boiled the tank out for about three hours with a mixture of detergent and water, then filled it with nuts, bolts and gravel and gave it a thorough beasting. Almost like sand blasted inside, if yours has set ok, it should be ok to use petrol in. Did yours set and bond ok? I would prefer to treat mine before filling with petrol. The tank is sound with no leaks but I would still feel happier if it were treated first.
@@subliutenant Yes, it set rock hard Mo
so what happen to the tank in the end?????
i still have it.
@@retrorestore did the petseal harden in the end?...
Will it work on Goofy Cart tanks too? Thanks Martin
It should do George. It has set now.
👍👍👍
I knew youd do this i needed to use it on my suzuki dr 600 after tank restoration didnt trust it now sits in drz 400 plastics and tank
It has hardened now and should be fine.
Hi Martin... Great vid .. my fizzy was a DX ... do you know that model. Great bike !
Yes, mine was a DX/A A for autolube.
Maybe the factory folks let a short filled hardener bottle slip by the quality inspector.
Don’t forget to upload to Facebook Martin. 😉
oh yes, I forgot.
That tank looks the tits Mate!! Give it more time in a hot place, it will cure eventually!!☺
Thanks bud , yes it has set now.
Known in the trade as a 'balls up' You should create a comedy channel... Fan Dabi Dozi job on the outside paint job!
My vids are real life Mr Rust Man
That's why I like them...
Have faith, it will harden. Let us know
Yes Jim, It has hardened now lol
Put it in the oven for a couple hours at a low temp. It'll cure.
Its cured now, rock hard.
Martin just your luck eh ! Took your time to do it as per instructions didn't set as it should UNBELIEVABLE .
I searched images of petseal 250-260ml and looks like you have half of what it should be , Ever not put enough hardener in plastic filler it stays soft .
Its all ok now and gone hard. It had me going though lol
Pls do a new food video Mart
Not many people watched them bud
Shame, still love your videos Mart. Not so much the Retrohax "silent" vid's
Yourself and Mrs Butler made a good watch. great tips and tricks and also the banter. Thumbs up if people agree....
"banter" means comedy/joking for anyone outside the UK ... Craic for the Irish.. :-)
Bought some a few years ago utter crap never drys would never buy again you could leave it at room temperature for 4 years and it would still be tacky
It did fully cure after a few days.
I tried this stuff and it was not successful , never again will I use this product .
Thanks for letting me know what NOT to buy dude. Shame. I would be furious and email them straight away and complain.
It has set now and is rock hard. Had me going there for a while though lol
I would have been gutted
It sealed fine after a few days.
Mine disolved in petrol after one week of
Curing... shit
