Maybe because I'm a little older, but Ashley Kerwin should be up there. She was a holier than thou music snob, outed Manny's pregnancy, threw Jimmy under the bus for her music career, left emotional vulnerable Craig for some guy she met over the summer. Do I really have to go on.
I hated her character so much 😂 Ashley , Emma , Clare & Darcy they all annoyed tf out of me
THANK YOU. Every time she showed up onscreen I cringe for laughed at something she did. Her actress is really damn good for making me hate her character so much.

she also did not have a personality whatsoever. her personality depended on who she was dating or hanging out with at any given time
Finally someone mentioned Imogen! Almost everyone I know loves her but apart from Fimogen she was bad. This girl stole Eli's medication and emotionally manipulated him, planted drugs in Clare's locker, impersonated Fiona to sabotage her job opportunity and kept pressuring Jack to come out the closet. Also her being held back was pointless and wasn't really interesting in that period.

Emma and Claire are so similar. Both terrible to their best friends, I always disliked them and loved Manny and Ali

I found him pretty unlikable due to the fact that he was SO desperate to be “popular” that he wouldn’t hesitate to throw his friends under the bus or cast them to the side if he felt that’s what he needed to do to be liked by the “right people.” I can appreciate that his character is realistic, in that there are people that think like him in high school. I still think he’s an annoying, disloyal loser and a bad friend.

Jenna was so annoying at first but her storyline with the baby was sad and she got more likeable near the end of season 12 and stayed fine until she left the show
one of the things I absolutely love about degrassi that I feel helped with the world building was that no one was perfect. everyone was struggling with something everyone made mistakes, it made the characters feel like real people. I feel like it also allowed us to reflect on ourselves and the people around us- if we can't tolerate seeing those actions in a comfort show, then we def should not be tolerating it irl
yup! every single character had their flaws and that made it feel like a more genuine and real teenage experience!

So, as a lesbian, I can tell you why Imogen said what she said when Dallas told them to make out. Dallas was objectifying women who love women by asking to make out for his gaze; not for their own expression of love/affection. WLW are often fetishized by straight men who think they can either change our minds or think lesbianism is only for their enjoyment. Imogen saying "Ew" was a reaction the blatant objectification of her and Fiona's sexualities. This is further echoed by Fiona also saying "Ew" for the same reason.

Emma was a snob most of the time. But she made me have a little hope for her in the graduation episode. Liberty makes out with Damian (even though he’s with Emma), as she’s bawling and apologizing to Emma, she says “i understand if you’re furious”, to which Emma replies “I am… at Damian. But i’m not ready to throw away 6 years of friendship”. Girl, thank you. 🥲
I agree on Emma she was such a horrible friend 😭 between dating the dude who exploited her “best friend” to feeling jealous once Manny wanted to be a cheerleader, she also once told manny “better than being the school slut” like WHAT.

omg Clare got on my NERVESSS. Especially between the Alli & Jake, because the only reason she apologized to Alli was bc Jake left her and she had no one else to help her. Plus she made everyone’s problems seem insignificant to hers, just a hot mess.

I personally like Jane despite her cheating on Spinner. Yeah, cheating on him was definitely wrong, I won’t deny that, but real talk, who didn’t cheat on this show? Spinner cheated on Darcy with Paige and Darcy inadvertently cheated on him with Peter and the entire internet. Manny was Craig’s side piece while he was with Ashley and Ashley cheated on Jimmy with Sean, then cheated on Craig with somebody in England, so pretty much almost everyone had their fair share of cheating and being a side piece🤣🤣

A character I hate but you didnt mention is owen. I don't understand how he bullied gay characters for more than a season, then they drop the bomb that his little brother is gay. He doesn't even have a coming out. Hes just gay and his brother happens to be s homophobe.
And I dont hate drew but it needs to be pointed out. Every girl Adam had ever had a crush on, Drew eventually date. Its fucking bizarre. Bianca, Katie, Becky, the only one he didnt date was Finoa and only because she was a out lesbian at that point.
i also didn't like owen i wanted to ship him with anya but he really didn't have a redemption arc. also Drew dating every girl Adam liked was very disturbing

i agree. i would’ve also liked if the “reason” was because he was ashamed of his brother, but then a redemption arc where he comes to terms and becomes more open minded, which would’ve eventually made him a likable character
i thought i was the only one who thought lola moved kinda funny. like she has broken the girl code so many times 😭 and that one little comment that she made abt the other volleyball team was just the cherry on top 😭
I really liked Claire when she first appeared but I feel like the writers ruined her and made her unlikable. They gave her too many storylines that I feel were unnecessary and didn’t fit her character.
Some of her storylines could’ve been giving to characters who needed more development too

i was an alli who dated a Johnny. That plotline really opened my eyes at 15.
Characters like Emma, Clare, and Darcy always irk my nerves because they always shame others due to their beliefs and self righteousness it’s so irritating. They’re meant to be seen as “innocent and sweet” girls but are always so selfish and horrible to their friends and end up being complete hypocrites it’s ridiculous 😭
I hated Imogen at the beginning of her arc because she was a creepy stalker.
But her relationship with Fiona blossomed and I loved that.
Finally, Claire slander. I feel like so many people defend her when she's damn near just as annoying and a terrible friend as Emma was.
Her annoyingness is why I liked her lol. She gave the show zest
i think if i were to nitpick the bad things every degrassi character did, there would be no one left to like. even icons like manny were in the wrong in diff situations.
also i dont get how imogen was in the wrong for not wanting to kiss her girlfriend to please a bunch of men who fetishise them. i get not liking her but i feel like dallas was the main one in the wrong there for not taking a no as a no.
oh yeah, dallas was definitely in the wrong there, i just didn't like the way imogen said "ew" lol, thought it was kind of even more embarrassing for fiona
I do love Manny but in season 3 she wasn't the best like sleeping with a guy she knew had a girlfriend (granted Craig is the main one to blame but Manny isn't innocent in that situation) and when she ditched Emma at the rave to be with said guy, don't get me wrong I couldn't stand Emma mostly BUT Manny was being a bad friend in THAT situation. That was proably the only time I sided with Emma
I do love how the characters are all flawed as teenagers and young adults generally are but I also feel like with some of the characters their flaws outweight the good.
Manny was usually in the wrong lol. Emma and Manny were both bad.
Clare had no right to be mad at Alli for kissing Jake, I understand they were friends but Clare and Jake recently broke up so its not like Alli did that when they were together, besides their parents were married so that should've NEVER been a thing

The problem was that she immediately forgave Jake and wouldn't talk to Alli for a long time. In fact, she didn't start talking to Alli again until she needed help with something.
@@abigailwilliams8889& when Jake told Clare that Alli kissed him & Clare just believed him and iced Alli out, that didn’t make sense. I think they forced the Clare/Alli falling out to add some drama, but I think their friendship got stronger when they became friends again at the end of season 11
I'll name a few and keep it brief:
Chantay-Nosey as hell, always in other people's business, and ALWAYS had something smart to say
Esme-SEVERELY obsessed with getting attention and did ANYTHING to receive it, couldn't get over the fact that her boyfriend was still close to an ex (Maya), which made sense because they were friends LONG before they dated so that friendship wasn't going anywhere
Imogen-Hated her in season 13-14 due to how thirsty she was for a story for Degrassi TV, and got carried away from time to time
Johnny Dimarco-Basically what you said, a pos bully who barely showed any remorse for what his friend did, and had the audacity to bully Toby like NOTHING happened
Darcy-It's good that she changed, but falsely accusing Simpson of sexual assault is something I could NEVER forgive her for
Drew-All the girls he dumped that he could've lasted with but just had no commitment to them
And of course, every rapist because they're garbage for taking advantage of people🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
I agree with all of these, but especially the one about Darcy. I couldn’t stand her long before she got sexually assaulted, but disliked her even more once she accused Simpson of sexual assault! I’m also not a fan of Manny. I know she’s one of a lot of people‘s favorites, but I just didn’t like her and don’t really know why.

In Chantay’s defense she barely had any story lines of her own if we’re being honest she’s really just another example how Degrassi failed when it came to the black characters
How or why Emma's and Clare's friends stuck around is a mystery to me.
After rewatching the show for the umpteenth time I'm adding Craig to my dislike list.
The only flaw I fault Craig with was the affair with Manny while he was with Ashley, he could've broke up with Ashley but he let the affair continue for a few months until he was discovered, I'll let his commotion at Ashley's dad's wedding slide because that was his breaking point RIGHT before it was revealed he was bipolar, and even his coke addiction because unfortunately some people turn to drugs but he ended up going to rehab and got better

Tristan was such a terrible friend to Maya too. But I will say he was a lot more bearable as a character in comparisons to Emma or Clare.
i like the layers they gave these characters mentioned. definitely needed on the show to give contrast or to have storylines for other characters that we really enjoy. i like that the show shows that the biggest bullies to you can honestly be the people you feel you're the closest to

Yessss no I’ve been starving for more degrassi content after currently rewatching the show for the millionth time but yessss when you mentioned the Emma and manny dynamic I was already hooked love this!
Tristan: He was very wishy washy and always got mad at Maya when she tried to save him from his bad decisions. He had some likable moments and I felt really bad for him when he was in the coma.
Holly J in the beginning for obvious reasons. She was always starting some mess so I didn't feel sorry for her when All started the "i hate holly j" group. However I did like her character development.
Owen: Pig. Although he did get a little better while he was with Anya
Mr Perino: Unhappy dude. I hated how he treated his students because he simply hated his life.
Derek: His jealousy of Danny. Setting him up by planting women's undies in his bag with that racist manager breathing down his neck.
Frankie: Nothing was ever her fault. She just didn't get it. Played the victim
Mr Raddich and The Shep to name a few
Don’t forget: Derek bullied Jane for being on the football team too😤

okay whats weird is i started with next class before initially starting next gen so i was CONFUSED but then finished next gen during the pandemic and rewatched next class and i honestly can see why netflix cut the plug. because WHAT WAS THAT

Holly J. used too mean so mean and cruel until she changed alot over the seasons as well. I never knew how annoying and mean Emma was until now including Claire lmao

MY THOUGHTS:
Emma. I didn't like her AT ALL. She was a horrible friend to Manny and was constantly starting shit. Plus she was rude for no reason.
Imogen. I loved Imogen and Fiona together. Fiomgen is one of my favorite ships and overall I do quite like Imogen but she's far from a favorite. I did not like her when she first joined the show and everything with Eli or her getting with Adam.
Johnny. UGH. I hated him so bad. ALSO HIS ENTIRE RELATIONSHIP WITH ALLI??? horrible. disgusting. i liked that he helped alli when she ran away but it doesn't make up for anything.
Clare. I actually like Clare a lot. She was so dramatic but I lived for it. Definitely agree she wasn't the greatest friend though.
Lola. I didn't like Lola either. She annoyed me so bad and all the reasons you gave were so real. Miles and Lola as a ship will never be loved by me.
Jane. I didn't like her cheating on Spinner but overall I did like her outside of that.
Jack. I didn't like her. She was boring to me.
Tristan should’ve been on this list lol he was a terrible friend to maya and a terrible boyfriend to miles (but I don’t condone miles cheating on him while he was in a coma)
Nahhh Clare got on my nerves so much bro, she can forgive Jake but not Ali even though ali apologized and was clearly sincere, she’s always putting boys before her bestfriend and it got on my nerves to say the least 😭

I think Degrassi is one of those shows where you love a character one episode and then you hate it profoundly the next: for me it happened with Marco, for example.
As such, I do still like Imogen and Lola despite the fact they do have some bad flaws

@@cheshirerose2001 I have seen the episodes long ago, so they are not fresh in my memory, but I clearly remember liking him in one episode and disliking him in the next: I believe it was that episode where that guy, Tim, got bullied and Marco stood up for him and then he pretended to like him just to get over Dylan

Lola’s actually a bad person tho she was racist to her bestfriend and also always after her friends relationships even when Tristan was in a coma she went for Miles

Claire was Emma 2.0 minus activism and feminism
Jane had that one memorable and powerful two-parter episode dealing with her uncovering buried trauma her father had caused (she had suppressed her memories of his s- abuse) when he tried to re-enter her family. That I think is worth having to deal with her other crap to have had that plot line. Also, they at least gave her karma for cheating on Spinner: losing him, regretting it, and having to see him soon after move on and have a wedding to another girl (even though Spemma is inferior to Semma, at least it delivered that karma).
The only thing I liked about Lola was her friendship with Yael and helping Yael come out as nonbinary.
I love manny. Emma did NOT deserve her

I honestly never minded Ashley sure she could be annoying and toxic at times but there were characters in the series who were worse and at least she would apologize for some of her actions unlike Emma.
I couldn't stand Emma throughout most of the show, she had her moments (like the purple dragon episode) but aside from those moments she was just toxic

@@cheshirerose2001 One thing I hated about Emma was how she handled situations, she jumped to conclusions before hearing someone out, like the situation when she found out that her dad lived in an assisted living home, she assumed that her mom put him there and when her mom told her his parents put him there she was like "And you didn't stop them?" forgetting her mom was still a teenager at the time like she had a say in it, and she shut that conversation down and just walked away, like at least get all the facts before making assumptions🤷♂️🤷♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I'm ngl. Lola definitely had her faults but I absolutely loved her. She was just so quirky and I feel like that's what the show needed. Especially in next class. With the Maya thing and everything. Everytime she popped up on the screen she was just so bubbly and I feel like she always tried to look at the positive side of things. The bus crash episode is an episode where she shows more than just her quirky side and shows a little bit more depth but idk. I may be alone on this but I loved Lola 🥰
I like clare and i have a few reasons for that number 1 people are always like oh i love eli and i hate clare but elie was the toxic one in the relationship like clare was absolutely the victim in pretty much all of her relationships and was she a bad friend at time yes but were alli and jenna bad friends to her aswell also yes
Johnny could have had such a great arc and storyline. Could have been a Jay 2.0 (but actually put the work in because Jay's change was just being written differently one day and everyone just accepting the previous Jay was a fever dream)
yeah i like jay a lot but where was the redemption arc??? he was just a normal dude all of the sudden lmao. and yeah i wish they gave johnny a redemption, wouldve made for an interesting character at the very least.

Dave, Jenna, Jonny, Chantae, Jane, Derek, Holly Jay. I also couldn't stand Alex she played a role in Jimmy getting shot and neve had any consequences absolutely disgusting. Had Alex not let them back there the feathers in paint probably wouldn't even have happened.

The whole story with Emma & Damien was stupid, he was useless and just shoehorned in. They should have brought Daniel Clark back to play her boyfriend instead giving Sean more air time.
I dislike Eli too tbh. He was my favorite character as a teen but as an adult...not so much.

Personally, I didn't like Manny very much. She wasn't always supportive of her friends either, she could be extremely selfish and made a lot of really stupid decisions without having to learn much from them. I kinda lost sympathy for her after a while. She and Emma kind of deserved each other.

god I can't stand emma and I don't understand how she's like this when spike was such a good character. I watched the old 80s degrassi episodes with my mom and spike is def one of my favorite characters, she was a good friend most of the time from what I remember and she was also very pro-choice. never thought her daughter would turn out to be so annoying lmfao

THANK YOU FOR SAYING EMMA IS AWFUL!! Like, I know “it’s just a tv show”, but Manny deserved a way better best friend. Emma went in on Manny for fooling around with Craig while he was dating Ashley(not that she’s any better), and then she went and fooled around with her ex’s best friend, and mind you this ex literally saved her from getting shot, and the only thing she got from it was the clap. I can’t, she’s the female version of Peter.
One thing that made Degrassi super relatable is that they made unlikeable characters. We couldn’t love everybody lol

I might be biased because I like Clare even if I recognize why some people don't, but her not forgivng Ali right away for kissing Jake was understandable. I didn't like that Jake and Clare stayed together after becoming step siblings, that was weird, but Clare still had feelings for him and Ali kissed him knowing that just because she needed to feel better abt herself. That was shitty, and Clare was right to be pissed at her for that.

I relate to jane's backstory so I can't hate her but her cheating on spinner made me so sad :( they were one of the best degrassi couples imo and i hate the writers for ruining yet another iconic ship. also spinner and emma ending up together made no sense that wedding should have been spinner and jane's.
also I agree imogen sucks. I wanted so badly to like her and fiona together. but i just didn't really care for them bc i found imogen INSUFFERABLE.
