They're both excellent transfer cases, so I suppose it would come down to the intended use. If you need a full-time (AWD) option for winter/snow driving, the 242 would be the way to go. If you're looking for pure offroad performance and aftermarket support, I'd give my vote to the 231. What type of build are you going for? Mostly street with occasional offroad trips (fire roads, easy trails, etc?) or will it be a dedicated offroad rig? Maybe something in-between?

Is 231 better than 242? Trying to gather info for my swap on my 98 5.9 limited.
