  • John from www.okraw.com/ visits his 20 year vegan friend, Susan Lerner to learn about some of the ways she chooses to live her vegan lifestyle as a part of nature, and not in a sterile box.
    First, you will discover how Susan rescues dogs, provides a habitat for fish, bees, insects, plants and other local wildlife. Will discover Johns opinions on living a vegan lifestyle and how he strives to live.
    You will learn how she catches poisonous bufo marine toads that may kill her rescue dogs and what she does to them.
    Next you will discover how Susan provides Honeybees a home and harvests and uses some of the bees honey.
    John will then interview Susan about keeping bees as a Vegan and being a compassionate natural beekeeper.. You will learn more about bees and what is most important when beekeeping.
    You will discover how its hipocritical to harvest the honey from bees but at the same time support and purchase conventional and organic foods that are using enslaved bees to polianate crops so 30% of fruits and vegetables to grow.
    You will discover how honey bees can increase yield of fresh vegan fruits by 100% and a valuable part of the ecosystem.
    Next you will discover the truth about honey on how most honey in the store are not ethically produced and only produced for profit. John and Susan will dispel some false (and truth) about how some bees are treated in the production of food via pollination and honey.
    You will learn John's truth about the problem with honey, bees, farming, fruits and vegetables of today and why its it occurs.
    You will learn about some of the bee products that John chooses to use and how he chooses them. You will learn why many honeys may not be as natural as you think.
    You will also discover how some bees can lose their lives when harvesting honey. You will also discover how chemical and organic pesticides are used to kill pests on the food that is grown that vegans eat.
    You will learn how John views honey and how it is a plant based food. He will share his opinions on how often he believes honey should be used. He will share his thoughts on how much he eats as well, and why he chooses to eat small quantities of honey.
    John will share his views if he would rather eat honey or raw vegan agave.
    Next you will discover how nature is not a “vegan” system and how Susan attempts to orchestrate the nature that surrounds her home. Next you will discover Susan's opions on living on a property and being vegan.
    Next, John will share a story about Oakley, his 7 pound minature pincher Oakley and had him “wake” up about being vegan and how we should live in reality and strive to do the best we can.
    Finally, you will discover Susan's final words of wisdom coming from a 20 year vegan on how to become a better vegan and be responsible in this web of life. You will discover the steps you can take to create a better ecosystem instead of destroy the earth's ecosystem.

    When you keep bees, you have a relationship. I keep my bees safe from predation, weather, etc while giving them a nice habitation. They can leave anytime they want, but when you have a relationship, there really isn't anything wrong with an exchange for a small amount of honey. One hand washes the other.

    • @victorbigdipper
      @victorbigdipper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Biology can help clarify this. A relationship with the bees such as Susan's is called a mutualism.Both sides receive benefit that helps sustain their lives. However, taking the life of an animal even if you fed/raised/housed etc is called commensalism as it is ultimately not beneficial for the animal losing their life.They are very different relationships. If a butcher says this, then they clearly are unable to discern the difference or are trying to make themselves feel better.

    • @victorbigdipper
      @victorbigdipper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Okay, I am not here to convince you otherwise. I grow my own food, have a permaculture food forest and keep bees as well. Clearly, we have a difference of perspective. Cheers.

      +Spoo Rin I'm fairly certain they would rather be compassionately kept than extinct. There is currently an epidemic of colony collapse spreading across the country. Animal activists and bee activists are actually trying to get more people into compassionate beekeeping to save bees from extinction. Also, they really could leave the hive any time they want. Bees can and do reestablish hives.

    "A philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude-as far as is possible and practicable-all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."Some people fail to recognize the "possible and practicable" part

      +okraw John, I love your soul. I need to send you a youtube message about something. I'm going to try and send it. I just found out today how to do that. I'm one of your gyg'ers that came over here. I loved this video. I'm so sorry for what happened to your kittens. Oh geezz...my heart broke. It's okay. Your intentions were good. You meant NO harm. But, nature and life happen. We live in this duality and it sucks. I'm looking for an upgrade soon. LOL Anyway, I'm going to send you a message because I don't feel comfortable asking my "vegan" question publicly. You are the NICEST vegan I know of.

      @funkymunky 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +okraw Why John gets it wrong: It's not about treatment, it's about use. And use leads to abuse. It's practicable to exclude bee exploitation for honey, so honey is not vegan, just plant-based.

      Love your videos John and I know she's your friend and she's a great woman but the fact remains that as long as people eat honey even in a positive way it will support the animal agriculture industry. If she was a true vegan she should raise only local bees because honeybees displace the native populations and again the honey is not made for humans it's made for baby bees she can justify her sweet tooth but it's sounds a lot like a person raising sheep and using the wool thus creating the habit which creates the slavery. Same as the chicken raiser who sells the eggs "but I treat my chickens good" typical excuses at least she says she's a beegan because she isn't vegan by definition.

    I'm a beegan as well. Honey is a health food in small quantities. Does wonders for allergies, haven't had them in 10 years since adding raw organic honey to my daily smoothies. I love the term beegan as it explains what I do as well. Honey has been used as a medicine for years, and it holds up if produced naturally.

    John,
    THANK YOU for tackling this subject... I've been talking about this for years and received a lot of criticism for it... but since I have a farm I can relate to what Susan is saying about how Nature functions... Because I have seen the decline of the honeybees at my farm in the last ten years I have decided to also keep bees this year for the first time. And I feel grateful for Susan's beautiful example of how to do it compassionately and fairly.
    Perhaps, you could further do a show about all the animal products that are in regular everyday products that we all use... like computers, film, shellac, plastics, cosmetics, one of the waxes that they coat fruit and vegetables with that is a crushed up insect, industrial products, and numerous other everyday items that we are mostly unaware of that contain animal products. IMHO The thing that needs to be done once we recognize these things and want to change them is to encourage research into finding non animal substitutes for these uses. Non animal substitutes that is, that are not lethal in themselves, so that we don't make a bad situation worse.
    I believe that your overwhelming emotions here are an indication of growth, realization and acceptance on your part about, as you mentioned, things that are "not always black or white." The 'between' areas that are difficult to understand when we want to be kind and compassionate.
    One time, years ago, I had an enlightening dream about the meaning of all existence. It was so vivid that it woke me up. And I said to myself, "Oh, now I understand, and it makes perfect sense and I was at peace. I will never forget this. Maybe I should write it down. No, I said to myself, I'll never forget this, so I didn't write it down."
    Next morning, I remembered the dream and remembered that it made me feel good, but I didn't remember the message. So frustrating! One day I was telling this dream to a friend of mine, and in the middle of my description she finished the last part for me, because she had had the exact same dream and the same non recollection. Perhaps, our understanding will come when we have the ability to use more of our brains rather than the small portion we are currently using.
    Thank you again John... always great stuff that you present... Peace out...

      That's right. And that is only difference between store bought junk labeled in any way someone wants and raw, 100% pure honey bought from trusted source - directly from beekeeper as John (and I ) does.

      I eat raw local organic honey as well. It's the only "non-vegan" thing I do, if you could call it that. I live in SC and there is no shortage of local raw organic honey. I put it in my smoothie every day. Helps with allergies immensely and is a truly healing food. I hate how honey is demonized when it is INDUSTRIAL honey that is bad, not this kind of honey.

    In Australia we call those toads "Cane toads" because the cane fields were being attacked badly by beetles and the CSIRO decided to bring a few in to test if they would attack the beetles. They didn't help with the beetles, all they've done is damage the invironment by destroying native species and are spreading. They've spread over half of Australia.

      Banana wars are killing people in all the countries where bananas are grown commercially
      a sprawling conspiracy made up of politicians and public servants, large landowners and business interests, military officials, paramilitaries, and narcotraffickers. This would at least partly explain why, in 2001, some 3,400 AK-47 assault rifles sent to the AUC from Nicaraguan trafficking partners were unloaded by a Chiquita subsidiary on a Chiquita dock, the same dock where a company official had recently paid $30,000 in bribe money to Colombian customs officials.

    Hello! great video, it's answered so many questions I felt I couldn't get clearly anywhere else. I was wondering though, as the queen bee in this video isn't manipulated and they naturally swarm and grown new queens, does this mean a slower process to obtain 'honey' and a chance that they may swarm elsewhere if not 'controlled'? i'm only unsure about this because when I read other apiary 'how to's' they always introduce new bee's after 1 year because she might fail in production, so in this case is it viable to obtain honey only for yourself, but it wouldn't work as a small business? I just wonder if small businesses are able to operate this way where there's minimal manipulation and the queens are not taken away, killed and replaced, i'd like to support local honey but I don't know if they would do this method if it's cheaper, faster and easier to replace the queen, thanks!

    Thank you Susan, thank you okraw. A couple of questions. I feel like I do live in shoebox with everything dead and dying around me as Susan mentioned in this video--in a foreign country where meat is being popularized by yoga teachers! I want to go home. In the meantime, when a cockroach occasionally comes in, and I can't cajole it out, it's so disruptive to my life (and I sleep on the floor). They're huge, hide well, run, jump, and fly a little. So I do what I can to kill them. How do you feel about killing cockroaches? Also, with the frogs, what happens to them after they come out of the freezer? I've always wondered if some kind of antivenom couldn't be made for "earthlings." If other animals were immune to their venom, they'd become a more natural part of the habitat, wouldn't they? I don't know how these things work. 'We' don't have them here. Sorry to hear they're in Florida. Thanks again!

    I so appreciate this episode! Susan looks and sounds much like my mom. My mom taught me many of the same things. We grew up gardening in Tucson, where she still has many fruit trees and native plants.
    This episode answered all my unanswered questions about honey. I can not thank you enough! I'd love to know what you and Susan think of the Flow Hive system.
    I have a month of raw vegan under my belt, and my family just made the decision that this is not a trial anymore. We want to be vegan forever. I am so happy! It's what I've wanted since I was old enough to express my love for animals. I am only sad that it took this long for me to get the knowledge that I needed. However, I was not idol during those years. From my parents getting annoyed with the multiple lizards and birds I rescued to years in the veterinary field, I do what I can. So I really identify with your story about the kittens. It reminded me of a time I fostered 13 kittens that were all sick with panleukomenia. It was one of the darkest times in my life. I was helpless to save most of them. But a few I did save and gave them loving families. Although I am happy about that, the nightmare of that week and how physically and emotionally draining it was makes me never want to volunteer for something like that again. It is hard enough to see any animal die. But babies that should be full of life and promise that leave before being about to play and grow through childhood is the worse ever!

I'm always the 'educator' for those that come to me for my insight (yes, I'm still a student too). I'm tired and heart broken sometimes. That isn't a good thing. Can't be good to feel that way, bad for one's health in all ways. I always say, "when the student is ready, the teacher appears". I guess we can't feed a closed mouth. I hope to meet Susan soon as I live not too far from her and I hope to be able to raise bees one day and just to give them a safe place to thrive. Now I know why my orange trees grow a few oranges a year, NO BEES!!! DANG IT!! I have come to the conclusion that no one is a vegan if we must live in an environment that upsets the natural habitat for animals. Like the last forest in our area on Donald Ross Rd, the Briger Forest.These businesses, condos and homes are taking homes from the animals who live there, or use to. I have seen so many images of foxes and other animals racing across the 4 or 5 lanes to escape the bulldozers. scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/12347971_790780301068416_5265240576573656329_n.jpg?oh=18084780d57eb8ca19cbea37201db2c3&oe=572EE285
    I commend all the great souls petitioning to save the panthers, foxes, turtles, birds, tortoises and other animals now trying to escape to other environments near by, are getting slaughtered on Donald Ross and the Interstate that blocks their path to the closest wild areas. So, if you wear clothes, shop in stores that used to be a forest, live in a house that took a space for natural habitat, or anyplace else that is not on the moon, you are not a vegan. I think we need a new term and so we can all get on the same page. No more fighting, name calling, we're all for saving life.

      Beekeepers always leave bees honey to eat, or the colony would die in the winter. In addition, they help the bees by providing places for them to live, in addition to other assistance with diseases, etc. They also protect them from wild predators who would eat all the honey and destroy the bees' home. It's a symbiotic relationship. It's only fair for the bees to provide something in return for the assistance.

    I really appreciate seeing someone understand that their views Although maybe Closer to right may not be perfect?
    Did you know that there are a lot of regenerative ranchers like myself who have a very diverse food system. That is not only providing homes for all of the farm animals that we raise and eat But also providing lots of habitat for lots and lots of wildlife. You cannot have a complete ecosystem without plants and animals Having a symbiotic relationship. There is a wonderful term called Agra forestry I challenge anyone to research and learn more about this topic. I'm not against anyone's views and I do not think That I have the right to change anyone's mind. But I would just like to say that not everyone who eats meat or raises meat is the same as what we are used to seeing with traditional agriculture.
    And I would also like to leave you with a question
    What would happen To all of the animals If everyone in the world stopped eating meat today?

I have a farm where the bees work, they are paid with pollen and nectar, I grow things I can't eat just so the bees will have a good variety to choose from. Bees are not slaves, they can leave any time they want and sometimes they do, they swarm and follow a new queen and I am happy for them if that is what they want but most of the time they are happy with the arrangement and stay.

  • @davidlally8937
    @davidlally8937 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some people watching might be against the honey or toad killing, however this is a great example of working with nature not against it. The toads are not indiginous to where she resides so they have little or no natural preditors so she is doing the eco system a favour. She is also working with the bees in a friendly manor and this type of honey production should be supported otherwise the alternative is people wont give up honey and will buy from cruel profit hungry industries.
    Awsome video as always keep up the good work and spreading the good words, thankyou!

    Woah, I love the emotions that come through this video. I honestly don't like honey that much, I buy it from this organic company that lives near me and the only reason I use it is in my tea. It's local and suppose to help allergies. I'm 100% vegan. I plan to grow most of my food once I buy my own land.

    The problem vegans have with honey is primarily regarding most store-bought honey which is created on a large scale, like factory farming, but there are also issues with even the most ethical of homestead beekeepers. Firstly, there are a lot of really fucked up things industrial beekeeping facilities will do to maximize their yield. They will often cut off the wings of the queen bee so she can’t escape, and then when the queen is transported by some of her working bees to a new colony those working bees are killed by the colony. Also the farmers often won’t leave any honey for the bees and will actually give them a cheap sugar substitute which is not as fortifying to them. These are the actions that make the industry so exploitative, and therefore against vegan ethics. I personally, as a vegan of over 3 years with a lot of interest in conservation, do see why some people will keep their own colony of bees on their personal property to help with pollination and the dwindling native populations, but i have yet to find a way that bees can be kept without having to interfere with them. If you just leave the hive to do its thing it will fill up with honey and the colony will either leave permanently or they will start filling the comb used for raising young bees and there won’t be any babies born, eventually leading to the colony collapsing. So the only option then is to take some honey out to make room, but during this process some bees are always killed. So that’s why i really don’t know how i feel about it all, there are both pros and cons. I don’t feel there is a truly ethical way to keep honeybees due to these reasons. Instead, believe people should be working to help introduce bees species that pollinate but do not produce honey. There are many thousands of species. That means you won’t need to interfere with their hive(s) because they don’t live in hives or produce honey, and you’ll still have the benefits of increased pollination.

    anti-exploitation is not dogma, saying roadkill is not vegan is dogma. sometimes it is right wrong, this isn't about raw or not, this is about exploitation, it's always wrong. if you want to help bees fine, but leave the damn honey alone! Yeah, she's not vegan, she takes honey from the bees for no damn good reason!

So nice to see a keeper actually make a video to inform vegans. i just wish they would have mentioned the mites that have killed most of the wild bee population thus without current human intervention bees would be extinct

    Just got in a huge Facebook discussion about honey and that I eat it for allergies. The conversation was over 45 pages long if it were an essay, single-spaced, 12-point font. It's still going now. I eat less than a teaspoon daily for allergy maintenance. It is local, raw, organic honey from a great beekeeper who doesn't do any of the things that evil factory-farmed beekeepers do. People need to stop condemning everything that isn't explicitly vegan. I do everything else vegan, except for the amazing honey I consume. So sick of arguing with militant vegans about how I'm stealing from bees when it is so far from the truth.

    with this topic of ripping the wings off of the bees queen. I've noticed a trend where where people will see one bad thing and that 1 bad thing will be publicized across millions of people people and they think because that 1 bad thing is known across the world across the world that that happens across the worldWhen in reality it was one bad thing that happened and now the whole world knows about itThe sad truth is most of the time people don't talk about the good stuff that happens. Good things is not good news Although it should be!
