  • John from www.okraw.com/ shows you how fresh, raw coconut kefir soda and yogurt are made. You will learn how you can make this healthy beverage and food at home as well as some of the amazing health benefits of coconut kefir.
    In this episode, John visits Hawaiian Superfoods in Maui, Hawaii who produce commercially local grown coconuts into a delicious coconut kefir soda aka coconut water kefir as well as coconut kefir creme aka coconut yogurt kefir fresh every week. You will discover the process of taking fresh, young coconuts and transforming them into a product that is healthier than the raw coconut and has a significantly longer shelf life.
    First, John will take you inside Hawaiian superfoods and share with you some of the many benefits of the local grown Maui coconut. You will then discover how thousands of young coconuts are opened every week so that they can be transformed into coconut kefir products.
    Next, you will learn how Hawaiian Superfoods carefully hand scoops the young coconut meat and grades each one to transform them into coconut creme kefir with yogurt-like consistency or Coconut Milk.
    You will then discover how a kefir culture is added that will bring alive the coconut creme mixture to create a healthy probiotic rich food.
    Finally, John will sit down with Chef Elijah Manahan and ask him the following questions about the Raw and unpasturized Coconut Kefir products he makes every week.

      @@robinlillian9471 Agreed. I have been fermenting my own water kefir and coconut kefir for a few years now. I was even making ginger beer made with a ginger bug until I discovered the original bacteria which was used in the UK referred to as a ginger beer plant. Now I have a ginger beer plant, water kefir grains and a bunch of ferments going at the same time.

      Easy. Buy Water Kefir grains on Amazon or from some other seller if you don't know someone who has them. Coconut water is available in the supermarket. Just be sure to get some without preservatives or it won't ferment. Milk Kefir grains would probably work on coconut milk if it also doesn't have preservatives, but they might not multiply. People have been fermenting their own drinks for countless millennia with no problem.

    So much useful info here. Serotonin connection with the vagus nerve was great. I've stopped drinking Kombucha because it was ruining my teeth. It was burning the enamel off my teeth, leaving me very sensitive. Just like this guy said. You can use a straw to avoid it touching your teeth, but I found even using a baking soda rinse afterwards wasn't helping, it was still destroying my teeth. It took about 4 months for my teeth to get better after I stopped.

    • @elishamoretti6316
      @elishamoretti6316 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @beautytounveil320
      @beautytounveil320 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry that happened to you! Just a question though, how long were your brew times? Did you reduce the first ferment period at all? Wondering if that would have lessened the effect on you. I have just started making kombucha, I've been researching like crazy! I'm kind of scared now...

    • @aguafria9565
      @aguafria9565 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't brew anymore, but if I did it again, I'd buy a pH meter to measure the levels before drinking it. My understand is that they change quite drastically during the ferment process, going up and down within days/weeks. My usual first ferment period was 7 days, but I have tried shorter periods which seemed to have an increased acidity judging from the teeth sensitivity I would experience after drinking. I blame myself for not learning more before I started out, but not once did I come across someone mentioning the dangers to our teeth when we drink Kombucha.

What are you doing with the coconut straw after you strain the firmer coconut meat , I was thinking it would be good for banana bread muffins . Wish I could eat some of your yummy coconut kefir . In canada I saw a merchant selling coconut yogurt and when you opened the container there was a swirl of a sweeter coconut liquid inside . So you experienced 2 tastes , the tangy coconut and the sweet . All the best in growing your business in Oahu !

    • @Sara-od2li
      @Sara-od2li 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. but they will not thrive in it so they need to sit in milk. Not sure how often, I've heard they can go without milk for up to a week but I think every second to third ferment in milk would keep the grains healthier. I use canned coconut milk. Would like to know how he keeps the water from separating from the cream? Also coconut milk ferments quicker than milk.

    Water, Coconut Milk (7%), Calcium Phosphate, Emulsifier (Sucrose Ester of Fatty Acids), Sea Salt, Stabiliser (Gellan Gum), Colour (Carotene), Vitamin D2, Vitamin B12

    Just to add to you point about reading the label John, we purchased some Aloe Vera water at Trader Joe's that had sodium benzoate in it. That water tasted like household cleaner, we poured it down the drain.

    Hey John ......I lived in Costa Rica and fell in love with Noni. Drank a cup 3 times a day. My friend down there mother was sent home to die (25 year ago) when her jungle doctor told her to to drink generous amounts of noni and she still going strong. I'm now in Hemet and really miss it (it has to be the real McCoy). Did you check Noni on your Hawaiian trip????

      Its not a probiotic drink. Noni is more hype and over priced.

    If you make your own Kombucha, you can definitely ferment it long enough to eliminate the sugar. Businesses can't do that, because most potential customers are accustomed to sweet drinks. If you leave it long enough, your Kombucha will resemble vinegar.

    Yup, it will give you a Alcohol buzz... And my symptoms gets worse.
    Did not have that problem with milk Kefir and I liked it much more then Kombucha.

    What I don't understand it looks like he still has it on the heat after he put the beneficial bacteria. I thought the heat hurt the bacteria?

    • @kalem007
      @kalem007 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, it activates the culture with the coconut itself. It's kind of like activating yeast for bread. His product is heated but is still raw.

      Carol Cumbie its kind of like baking, you change the state, but do not overheat, same as burnt baking if overheated

    • @killswi7ch

      Carol Cumbie he's only bringing it up to 90-95degrees F which is good for the bacteria not cooking it

    • @robinlillian9471

      It should not be more than mildly warm or you will kill the culture.

    Wow, you are banking on TH-cam monitization, I know you as growing your greens, now I see your 106K subs on a OKraw channel. Wow. Superstar from Henderson NV. We lived close to each other for 10 years (I was in Henderson for 10 years, and I moved to KCMO 2 years ago. It wasn't until I moved did I see you on TH-cam. I did see you one day at MT. Charleston. I was collecting pine nuts, and I saw your hands and knew you were doing the same thing. Anyway, take care and good luck, Tom

    The jar he uses to ferment is not air tight, so contaminants could get in/out... Otherwise looks great.
