Thank you for a good real world review. This convinced me to upgrade to the 396 from my old Zumo 390, which has started to cut out and turn off by itself occasionally (the usual Garmin wiring/power supply issue that comes from long time use). The added bonus of wifi map-updates, music player, live traffic etc. (none of which the old unit has) also helped me decide. As for the maps outside of the US that you mention, I live in southern Finland and the Here-maps that Garmins use are very detailled and constantly updated. I've ridden my 2008 Hayabusa all over Scandinavia and mainland Europe (the busa loves the german autobahns) and never gotten accidentally lost due to incomplete maps. Getting lost on purpose is another thing entirely :).
Very nice review....Please tell me what audio microphone make and model you are using. The sound quality is good and wind and engine noise is low. Did you set up a separate audio recorder with a low cut filter? Where did you mount the microphone? Is there a newer model you have seen which has any improvements you would wish you had? Many thanks...
Hello Keith, I use the Purple Panda Lavalier mic. Is there a newer model? Not that I know. I looked at other brands and unless you spend big bucks there’s little noise cancelation improvement. I found the Purple works well all the way up to freeway speeds. For perspective, I now ride a KTM 1290 Super Adventure. Windshield top is just below my chin. My mic is mounted on the inside of the chin guard of my full-face helmet. I record directly to my GoPro. Have to us the GoPro 3.5mm Mic Adapter $49 Gopro.com. Lastly, I set EQ in using Final Cut Pro X. Let me know if that helps, and thank you for the compliments. Eric
Well, if the original asker of this question didn’t see your response, I sure did 🙃 I’m looking for a good solution for a GoPro 7 but it seems a little convoluted, so I’ll check out the Purple Panda. Thanks 👍
Thank you for your review! Do you know how it handles when you deviate from a pre programmed route? Will it send you back to your pre programmed route or will it just reroute to the destination loosing the pre programmed route?
Yes, if you veer off the Garmin route it will try to get you back to its mapped route, vs. re-routing to your new course. where Google maps will tend to quickly adjust to your chosen route, Garmin tends to spend a lot of attempts to have you return to the Garmin programmed route. Eventually, it will re-map your newly chosen route. What makes a big difference is the map configs you've set. For instance, if you config find "want curvy roads" the Garmin will spend most of your trip trying to get you to turn around, or just try to lead your way out of the way. This is all because it trying to lead you to curvy roads. the same applies to other settings such as avoiding freeways, tolls, etc. In urban areas, I found if I left those off and ran on the standard mode Garmin fairly quickly adjusted to my deviate route, similar to Google maps on your cell phone. Let me know if this makes sense. Eric
@@blackswanodysseys It kind of makes sense. In any way, it answered my question enough that I think this is the device to buy. Still pondering a bit over software compatibility using linux and not MacOS or Windows, but that is usually a lesser problem. Thanks again!
Patrick, When I made this initial video I was led to believe you could use other maps via the memory card. After more experimentation, I found this wasn't accurate. Supposedly there is a workaround but it only produces a jpeg photo with no mapping interaction. Basically just looking at a picture of a map. I discuss this in my update video on the Zumo 396 LTS. Below is a link to that updated video. th-cam.com/video/qBEjieQF98Y/w-d-xo.html

Thank you. Good learn about mapping outside the US is detailed.

I recently purchased the 396, and I have a question about the memory card. How do you import from the SD card?

Just in case I gave you the incorrect link here it is
Why is your high beam constantly on? This is very annoying for other road users.
Exactly.
Do you ride?
If you're asking me, yes. And my point is, if it's annoying other drivers, then they see you. :)
@@hincapiej4 I was asking the OP, but your response is perfect

@@blackswanodysseys thank you so much
Cagdas, when you say you "formatted internal device" are you talking the removable micro SD card?
@@blackswanodysseys hi, i am afraid not :). I mean the main internal drive, its about 14 gb space

Also, will you unit power on? If so what is stated on the screen?
cool i’m in east Vancouver
Sounds like we are really close. I'm in the county between Vancouver and Camas
Bro are you alright? Seem to be having issues with apnea with the double gasping and yawning, while riding no less. See your doctor.
When? 😂
