That jolly old ROI thing. If there's no positive return on the investment, it has no place in the business. As a photojournalist, I used a Leica M kit. It made sense. It was the perfect tool for the job I was doing. When digital came about I sold the Leica gear and went with what was needed at that time - DSLR. It was a gutwrenching move personally, but right for my business. Today I use Sony, not because I like a camera with the ergonomics of a toaster, but it's the right tool. Keep up the great work bringing common sense to TH-cam.

Weird that Hasselblad and Fuji have a lot of common history. A lot of Hasselblad lenses are build by Fuji. The Hasselblad H was also build and in Japan also sold under the Fuji brand. The xpan was also build and sold by Fuji and so on :).

It's nice to see Scott is human and can buy 'wants' in his personal life. A friend told me if you want something - get it, you don't have to justify it. If you can afford it of course. I love kit and learning how to use it. That's my foolish things - like the older Mercedes. It's so great to have and use. In my 40 years I have acquired lots of gear and I use it. Not all the time, but it's there when I need it. My photography is what I enjoy in my personal life and I use it to make money too. I guess you can say I don't have a life outside of photography. I do what I love. Scott - I hope you get that Hasselblad someday. I had three of them and miss the days of using them.

Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus and I am happy. For the street they are perfect. No special editing software required, and no mechanical issues -- just great simply cameras for the street. I also have a Canon -- may be selling my Canon RP and lenses soon. Nikon Z5 + 40mm works wonders on the street. Great camera I bought for a grand.

I miss my M6. It’s the horrendous cost of film/processing/scanning that makes it less attainable in my opinion, not the actual camera and hence my reason for selling it. The X100V doesn’t come slightly close to the experience of shooting an M6 but at least each time I press the shutter it’s not draining my bank account.

I've been a Nikon shooter since starting photography more than a decade ago. I am a professional, shooting all kind of events, including video, as well as stock photography at a high end stock agency. One of my best purchases was the Nikon Z9. I know people say marry your lenses and not the bodies (and I have good lenses) but I've never gotten an upgrade so big which has eased my work immeasurably. The perfect, near instantaneous autofocus meant that I no longer have out of focus images. The lack of mechanical shutter meant that I can go out, make 50000 images (although the time it would take to go through them would be crazy), and the camera would be the same as new. All in all, the reliability you get from Nikon but especially from their pro bodies is amazing. I am not making an ad for Nikon. I see friends who are equally happy with an R5. I wanted to say that bodies are important, they can ease your work, and there are brands which give you an amazing middle ground.

Brilliant and exactly right. That being said, I recently bought my dream camera (Nikon F2) with a number of lenses. But, in my defence, it´s for "fun" use only. That, and it is a sh*tload cheaper than an M6. It´s my 18mpg Mercedes... and I love it. I love the feel of it, the sounds it makes, and the images I get from it. No regrets. Now I just need a "Hassy". 😎 Love your videos and your honesty. I learn more from you than most other TH-camrs about photography and I don´t even shoot commercial. Keep doing what you are doing.

We switched from Fuji GFX 100 to Hasselblad X2D as soon as they came out as I was sick of the menus and hated the colours - but the cost exercise over the Fuji really was worth it - thanks to Clifton Cameras MPB and London Camera Exchange Oxford and Bristol for making it all sweet and easy - I feel the original GFX100 was peak Fuji.

  • @ConnorNolanTech

I haven't upgraded cameras, but I have been going through a kit upgrade. First is the sensible, which was a set of manual primes I'm cinemodding for video. They all look amazing, and most of them have been dirt cheap and easy to CLA myself in under a half hour. The quality smashes my Zeiss Contax lenses, and I picked up a set of ten for less than the three cheapest Zeiss Contax lenses everyone buys to mod. Clear win in the ROI department.
Then there's the significantly less sensible, which is that I bought myself a Canon dream lens. I'll probably never make any money back on it unless I sell it, but I've wanted one for over a decade, and I finally let myself shell out that cash.

Great points on all. I can't afford a RED or ARRI video camera, so I settled on a Fujifilm XH2s. Excellent video quality and reliability. Enough formats to choose from. It's a great hybrid camera and I also enjoy the film grades and still pictures I get out of it. My Nikon D750 has been in its case for several months now., I take it out every now and again to make sure the batteries are good. Don't use it that much. Fuji is the best choice available today for people whose budgets exist in the real world.

As a side note to my previous comment, I come to your channel to put sensible into my head. To remind me that there has to be a good reason to buy something, not just give in to lust. Sometimes lust is good, but most of the times it gets in the way of actually enjoying what you already have. This from a hobbyist perspective.

    I always describe it as:
When I had a Canon it felt like using a hammer, but when I use a Fuji it feels like using a fine paintbrush. The Canon feels like a highly functional piece of gear but it's only nice for doing work, whereas the Fuji is a joy to use on its own.
I do occasionally wonder if my actual photography has deteriorated because I now use Fuji, as I no longer have full frame and a less simple interface (autofocus + start up times suck). Canon would be: turn it on and shoot and go, whereas with Fuji it often lose my autofocus point to give an example. At the same time the job feels more fun, artistic and wholesome.
I guess every camera has its pros and cons and the best thing we can do is be honest with ourselves :) For me I needed to get that Fuji bug out of my system and I could now switch back to Canon with peace in my heart. But I just came back from nature working with a model with an old film camera and man, my inner artist just really loves impractical gear :D Even using a nice fuji felt like a stap back from the snap that the film camera makes. The finality of it. The commitment.

If they ever produced a square digital back, I would have kept my 500cm (or my Bronica SQA's for that matter). Having a digital back that is always in landscape when one is using the waist level viewfinder becomes completely impractical when shooting in a portrait orientation. If only they would create a 56mm square sensor (anywhere between 24-60mp), now that would be amazing. Of course, it would be more expensive than the Merc and the petrol!

Agree with sentiment., but have a couple of "huh?" questions. I don't see how an M6 replacement is an X100V. I went into B&H looking for a Leica Q2 (few years back) and they suggested the X100V. That makes sense. Second, where can I find how to mount the Phase One 150 megapixel back on a Hassy V system camera? You can put older Phase One/Leaf, but I am not aware of a way to mount the new back. Please send links so I can check it out!

The Fuji GFX, fully agree, it’s a great tool for the job, secondhand it’s a steal. It might not be the fastest but it’s I think it suis your work perfectly. The Fuji x100, not so sensible if you ask me. The price is pretty steep, even if you can find one at retail price and it’s not the “best” camera at that price point.i think a secondhand Leica would be cheaper than a secondhand x100v. A leica m4p with a voightlander is roughly the same cost if you can snatch a good deal, which is more likely than getting a good deal on the Fuji x100. Sure, film is pretty expensive so the leica isn’t really sensible either, but at least it feels like a m6 (it is part from the light meter). The X100v just tickles the brain, it looks nice and might get you the same feeling (to me it didn’t so I sold mine) and it’s digital. A more sensible choice would probably be a Fuji xe3/4 or any entry mirrorless at this point. Getting the same results for less money, but yeah, the itch..

I had a 500cm with a digital back... Sold it because it was completely impractical for work, and the camera I swapped to is infinitely better for what I shoot. Seeing the price of Hasselblads only a couple of years on makes me wish I held onto it for a little while longer, but it was time for it to go. I think when you shoot with a camera for work, the "wonderful shoot process" and all the marketing gumph that comes with those cameras becomes an expensive novelty quite quickly.
That's why Leica's are call dentist's cameras. The only people that can afford to shoot one.
...having said all that, I sold my 500cm and bought a Leica q2... go figure.

They’re about to cash in and release an updated one that’s hardly updated and will cost more because they know from the second hand market that people are paying more than the new price for the X100V.

What I enjoy is having a blazing fast camera that gives you the option of relatively inexpensive premium lenses, and optional tiny lenses that are still VERY good. Once you realize you don't have to spend 3k on a lens the 3k on the body is very reasonable.

I finally got one, in fact over my lifetime I have owned three.. have, past tense. I actually hated them. Fantastic sound but awful to hold and play. Yet, probably still the most wanted guitar in the world. After over 50 years of guitar playing I now own a Epiphone, a cheap Gibson copy, not even a Les Paul. Why, because it’s affordable, I can easily replace it and I know that in a blind test NOBODY can tell if it’s not the real deal, nobody, in fact having played the genuine guitar it’s based on it might sound better, go figure. In short, it’s what works for you and gets the job done. The guitar players of the ‘60’s played what they could get not what was hyped. Kurt Cobain played a Fender Mustang because it was cheap and suited his hands and so on. Go out and buy what works for you and always ignore the hype.

You mention broncolor, I also dropped 60k on there scoro packs 10 years ago and crazy para modifiers, pulso heads etc, biggest waste of money in the history of waste of money!!. Great no nonsense video. Us blokes are daft aren’t we LOL 😜 oh and the x100v is massively over hyped and I have one to be able to say this along with lots of other Fuji goodies. I now settle on an XH2 and XH2s along with an XT5 as realise anything more even in the commercial world is just un necessary and I have owned phase, blad etc and even the awful Sony, ewwwhhh what was I thinking….. but have always had a Fuji since I was one of the original Fuji x photographers in 2014 and keep using despite its quirks. But I do refuse to join the hipster brigade and wear trousers that are to short no socks and loafers and grow a cool beard ….ooopps sorry your beard does look kind of cool though 😎🤣🤣

How are you ahead if you don't get a final result you wanted out of your camera? I think pics SOOC on Leica's are great and it's fine to adjust some things as needed. When you use filters to take away the cameras characteristics and make the photos appear as though they were taken with a less expensive camera system just seems counterintuitive. That's what I like about my Fuji's and Lumix. My point is that I don't care what one does with their camera or photos but when someone gloats about doing this I just think they could have saved some money buy using a less expensive camera and then post process the files. 100%. Fuji made me a JPEG shooter. I have my 6 preset recipes - and nearly all images I take are simply catalogued in Lightroom, and used without any edits - straight from the camera.
I still also save the RAWs, but that is as a failsafe in case I really messed up the exposure and need to save an image. (Plus, in a given year, I have 2-5 shoots such as the northern lights, landscapes, ...) where I use the Raws and spend more time editing the photos.
The recipes make the cameras so much more than what they should be.

Been on the fuji system for well over a decade and my reason for choosing it over the big three was Colour and the dials.
It always came down to colour for me; but the Dials on the older Fuji systems were a preference; I think about my light in thirds and the XT1 & XH1 at the time were the best that could offer me that and I still use the XH1 as my main camera.
The only cameras right now that could realistically get me off Fuji is the Nikon Z9, Hasselblad X2D the Leica SL2 But I cannot justify the price of any of their lenses either for the work I do.
