IMO what sets Tom apart (apart from the insanely beautiful music he seems to conjure out of thin air) is the clarity and perfect intonation of EVERY NOTE even in his fastest lines. It almost sounds like a keyboard player. Just absolute control of every note. Amazing!

This is the result of the countless hours he said he practices these runs at excruciatingly slow speeds. I think this bit is what keeps a lot of people from getting to the next level, including myself -- because of the fact that it's so boring and tedious. But obviously it's necessary.

Excellent conversation. Tom has become extremely articulate when explaining these techniques and seems to come up with increasingly approachable ways of breaking everything down. I'm glad he dissected his picking a bit more than he normally does; it always seems like he is a very good picker on the surface (which, for many purposes, he is) and being a bit dramatic when expressing his lack of ability there, but it makes total sense when you've mastered another technique to the extent that it's consistent and reliable, where other techniques then feel lacking.

Hey mate, I happen to do a mix of alternate, economy and legato techniques in my playing and something you said reminded me of an exercise I apply to lots of things to make sure my economy picking is accented where I want it and not imbalanced in favour of the down strokes. (In my early days I strictly alternate picked and ALWAYS accented with a downstroke; had to spend a lot of time starting lines on an upstroke to fix that). Let's say I'm doing a 3 note per string scale; alternate 4 notes in 8th timing and then 4 notes as 16ths in 3/4, so visually | | | | ||||| | | | |||| etc. You can do some kind of economic turnaround at either end to keep it flowing (on the top string of a C major scale ascending I would play the notes in this order: DEFEDFED and then CBA on the next string and commence descending back down, and do the reverse EDCDECDE->FGA on the low E string, this keeps the pick going in the "correct" direction for economy picking). I do the same exercise with 4 notes as 8ths and then 8 notes as 16ths in 4/4, doing this forces you to "feel the 4's" despite 3 note per string, economy picking or both, because you literally change the rate of notes like that. These are great for both economy picking and legato on straight three note per string scales.

@@streetwiseguitar5113 Hope it's useful for someone, it helped me to turn economy picking from borderline useless arpeggio sweeping as a technical drill into a seemless technique for nice even picking across strings. Tom's idea in this video of slowly branching from the note you're on in a flowing line to create unique ideas is really cool. I love that after playing for half my life I can click on a video and get a new perspective that makes me immediately want to grab my guitar haha. Nice video mate.

Is there are rule when Tom uses hybrid picking? When he plays the C major scale he uses the middle finger of his right hand ascending the line. When descending he uses the pick exclusively. I cannot yet see the advantage of hybrid picking in this case - did I miss anything? BTW: great insights into Tom's playing
First off as always, thank you so much for taking the time to watch this video. I just love talking with Tom. I need to have a look at what you’re talking about, and I would highly recommend you using the slow down function on the TH-cam video player so you can get a really good look at what he’s doing. Personally I use the vidami TH-cam slow downer pedal. You can see that I have a little discount code for it in the description… And if it’s not in the description of this video it’s in some of my other ones. It’s absolutely 100% worth getting because you can keep your hands on the guitar and you don’t have to mouse at all over the place. Let me know what you find out when you slow this thing down! I’m sure he has a system!
Tom is so brilliant! Could listen to him play all day long. Tom, you mention you can't really economy pick "down", and neither can I! I'm guessing you're an upward pick slanter like myself, and your string escape happens on the downstroke.

I will try to reach him and I am quite sure he would be interested or maybe he even invites you to jam with him on his channel ;) By the way there is this quite unknown Austrian guitarist Joe Doblhofer who is a member of the German Jazz Metal group Panzerballett but he also has his own fusion rock trio FS3 which is insane. He is as good as Scott Henderson and he writes super interesting and refreshing tunes. You should check him out if you want to hear some "new stuff" ;)
Wonderful...It's like listening to Einstein himself explaining the Theory of Relativity. I don't understand (at this point, anyway) most of what he is excellently articulating but it's just cool to listen to and see his masterful explanations and demonstrations. Very motivating to proceed (however slowly) on this path of learning this marvelous 6 stringed instrument.
First of all, I think the straight triplet hammers sound great when Tom plays it........ and when he picked fast? ........well that sounded great too...lol!

another way to play in time is to not run scales at all and to play each note consciously and deliberately..........play fewer notes......listen to music by John Adams and Aaron Copeland ............they tell a story with few notes.........guitarist don't have to sound like sewing machines
Of course, we are in the age of the sewing machine! I am just as guilty about it! But at least I try, and do it tastefully!

There are scores of videos of him playing. If that’s all you’re interested in, have Addit. Conversely, if you want to adopt a more advanced/deep way of doing real research, listen to the masters speak and explain what they’re doing. That’s exactly what Tom is doing in this video!

If you want people to watch THIS video (especially people who are unfamiliar with him and/or this channel), it would be better to at least include an opening segment of him doing the thing he's good at, to hook people who are new to him and/or you. (Also include a 10-second intro saying who you are, what this channel is, for new viewers.) Putting 'virtuosic legato' in the title (which is what got me to click THIS video) and not showing an example of it is bordering on clickbait from the viewer's perspective, even if that was not your intention. Just giving you some feedback through the eyes of someone new to your channel, and Tom. A good intro goes a long way to getting new folks to subscribe.
